A proven and proficient goal scorer in his 12th Major League soccer career, Kei Kamara, is expected to make his 300th top-flight appearances on Saturday. (Photo credit Vancouver Whitecaps)
The striker is set to become the first Sierra Leonean and the second African behind Dominic Oduro of Ghana in the league’s history to reach the milestone.
The former Columbus and Revelation attacker will join others such as Brad Davis (392), Brian Carrol (371), Chad Marshall (371), Bobby Boswell (366), Landon Donovan (340), Jeff Cunningham (365) Dominic Oduro of Ghana (336) and Cobi Jones (306) to name a few to have reached the milestone.
Without a doubt, Kamara will lead the lines against his former club Houston Dynamo as he bids to register his 100 MLS regular season goals at the BBVA Compass Stadium.
During the early stages of his career, he scored seven goals in 32 appearances for the Dynamo in the 2008 – 2009 seasons.
The striker opened his 2018 Whitecaps account in their 2-1 victory over the Montreal Impact last Sunday in the opener of the 2018 Major League Soccer goal campaign.
Speaking to Whitecaps journalists, Kamara said it is true they called him old for a reason but was also quick to acknowledge how far he has come.
“I’m honoured and I’m looking forward to game after game.” he said, “And, hopefully, I can play lots more games because I am not done yet.”
“I’m only playing for one reason and that has not happened yet so I’m still playing.”
“Consistency is the key – be a sponge absorber like and squeeze it out when is time – hopefully I’m able to translate that to some of the younger guys around me that have only played four or five, six games.”
Kamara on his potential 100th MLS regular season goals
“It’s good to always play against old team, and for me, that is the whole MLS – so it’s good.
“But, I look forward to the game – the numbers are counting saying 99 having a 100 goal in a regular season is definitely a big milestone I will love to get to but really I’m not focused on that.”
The Sierra Leone native arrived in Vancouver with a history and that includes 103 goals and 39 assists in 246 starts and 298 appearances in his MLS career, including 12 playoffs matches.
He is the 12th player in MLS’s history to eclipse the century mark in goals.

Sheka Fofanah spoke of his ‘disappointment’ following El Merreikh CAF Champions League preliminary exit last month.
Botswana side Township Rollers eliminated the 2015 African Champions League semi-finalists 4-2 on aggregate.
The Sierra Leone International scored on his CAF debut for Sudanese top-tier side defeating Rollers 2-1 in Khartoum but his goal was not enough.
“Obviously, was a huge disappointment for me and the club, he told footballsierraleone.net.
“After our home game in Sudan, I was so down and was one of those bad feelings you will not want it to be repeated.”
“My aim was to help the club reach the group stage, but was not meant to be.”
Meanwhile, El Merreikh SC Omdurman have won all three of their league-opening matches.
The 20-year-old, who bagged a debut brace is now focusing on winning something with his new side in Sudan.
“I’m happy here, the club atmosphere is good and I hope my arrival will start something exciting.”
“I will love to win something with this special club,” Fofanah noted.
They will be away to Al Ahli SC Khartoum this weekend in the Sudanese top-flight 2018 campaign.

Record-breaking winners Al Ahly recorded a 4-0 thumping over Mounana of Gabon on Tuesday in their 2018 CAF Champions League last-32 tie.
Botswana’s Township Rollers made headlines for the second round in a row with victory in Tanzania over Young Africans.
Nigeria’s Plateau United and Senegal’s Generation Foot still have hope despite first leg defeats.
Ahly were two-nil up before halftime and two goals from Abdallah El-Said in the second half secured the win.
The eight-times winners and beaten finalists last year will travel to Gabon later this month for the second leg.
That tie may seem to be over, but the six teams involved in the other three games on Tuesday all still have some hope of progressing.
Township Rollers 2-1 win over Young Africans in Tanzania gives them an excellent chance of going through and becoming the first team from Botswana to make the group stages.
Motsholetsi Sikele hit their winner late on in the game in Dar es Salaam. In the previous round, Rollers ousted Sudan’s El Merreikh.
Nigerian debutants Plateau United suffered a difficult start to their tie with former champions Etoile du Sahel – going three-nil down in the first few minutes of the game in Sousse.
By halftime it was four-nil, but they were not humiliated – instead scoring twice in the second half to record a 4-2 defeat and give themselves a chance of turning the tie around in the second leg.
In Tuesday’s other game, Horaya of Guinea secured a 2-1 home win over Generation Foot of Senegal thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Sidy Diop.
There are 12 other matches to be played on Wednesday – including title-holders Wydad Casablanca against Williamsville of Ivory Coast.
