Iran crush Sierra Leone in World Cup Warm-Up

Iran proved too strong as they dismantled a Sierra Leone side largely dominated by local stars 4-0 on Saturday in an international friendly at the Tehran’s Azadi Stadium.

A brace for Ali Gholizadeh and a goal apiece for Mohammad Reza Khanzadeh and Kaveh Rezaei helped the host to outclass their struggling visitors.

Sierra Leone came close to their worst ever defeat to Mali 6–0 in Bamako, Mali; 17 June 2007.

Despite all the controversies surrounding the friendly, the contest was a success for the world cup-bound.

The groundwork was Iran’s first 2018 World Cup warm-up encounter and the first between the two countries.

Iran ranked 33rd in the world and Sierra Leone 98th.

Sierra Leone last victory was against Kenya in the opener of African Nations Cup 2019 qualifiers in Freetown

Iran are in Group B at the FIFA World Cup alongside Spain, Morocco and Portugal.

Carlos Queiroz’s men will open their Russia 2018 campaign with a match against Morocco at Saint Petersburg on June 15, before taking on Spain in Kazan on 20 June.

Exclusive: Fifa gives green light to Sierra Leone friendly in Iran

Sierra Leone Stars hopes of meeting World Cup-bound Iran in a friendly encounter in Tehran on Saturday, 17 March has been confirmed by football world governing body, Fifa.

The contest will take place in Tehran’s Azadi Stadium.

A Fifa spokesperson told Football Sierra Leone UK via email that there was a need for proper clarification ahead of schedule match.

The match was uncertain after FIFA’s recognised SLFA head, Isha Johansen, and her Scribe; Chris Kamara informed the organisation that they were unaware of the ‘friendly.

Extracts of the communication read -“For the captioned international friendly match, please be informed there was a need for some clarifications before the necessary authorisation could be extended, but the said match will go ahead in Tehran.”

It could be recalled that on October 2017, Isha Johansen and Kamara were both ordered by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to step aside following charges of abuse of office and pilfering of public funds. The matter is ongoing.

In spite of the above, Fifa says they recognise the Johansen leadership until Integrity checks and elections are conducted.

The arranged test scheduled will be Iran’s first 2018 World Cup warm-up encounter and the first between the two nations.

The foreign-based are Finish-based TP-47 striker Thomas Koroma, JS Hercules midfielder Abdul Sesay and attacker Abu Bakarr Kargbo from fourth-tier German side Berliner AK 07.

The two countries have a very good international relation and Sierra Leone for the first time considered to play a friendly by a team heading to a World Cup.

The African minnows ranked 98th while Iran is the best Asian football team and 33rd in the world.

Sierra Leone moved down again to 98th position from 97th in the latest FIFA world rankings announced on Thursday.

The national men’s soccer side finished 2017 as the 97th best-ranked team in the world.

Sierra Leone best ever ranking came in August 2014, when they were ranked 50th globally.

In Africa, Sierra Leone, currently 22nd and 98th in the world 65th places behind Carlos Queiroz’s men.

Leone Stars including just three foreign-based players will take on the best Asian football team Iran on Saturday in an international friendly at Tehran’s Azadi Stadium.

The Top 5 in the rankings remained the same with World Cup holders Germany in the top spot, followed by Brazil, Portugal, Argentina and Belgium.

The next FIFA world rankings will be published on April 12, 2018.

Sierra Leone off to face World Cup-bound Iran in Tehran

The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) has confirmed that 2018 World Cup-bound Iran will play a friendly match with Sierra Leone on March 17.

The SLFA says John Keister’s men will on Wednesday, March 14 depart Freetown for Tehran, Iran.

According to The Head of Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) Mehdi Taj, Sierra Leone replaced Libya who withdrew from the friendly.

This Saturday’s test will be Iran’s first 2018 World Cup warm-up encounter and the first time they are facing the West Africa side in an international match.

The contest will take place in Tehran’s Azadi Stadium.

The two countries have a very good international relation and Sierra Leone for the first time considered to play a friendly by a team heading to a World Cup.

The African minnows ranked 97th while Iran is the best Asian football team and 33rd in the world.

Iran are in Group B at the FIFA World Cup alongside Spain, Morocco and Portugal.

Soccer star Kwame Quee releases debut single ‘MONICA’

FC Johansen Icelandic-based midfielder, Kwame Quee, has shared his debut single “Monica” with Football Sierra Leone.

The 21-years-old Sierra Leone international has demonstrated outside football that he has a musical talent.

The new music features hitmakers in Sierra Leone music industry such as Peeples, Rich Blink, Eddie King, Twice Ice Elonel and A Bangz.

His first new single ‘Monica’ from music label DJ Min -1 is a potential track that could rock music lovers in Freetown this year.

Trading is football in Iceland with second top-tier side Víkingur Ólafsvík; Quee told Football Sierra Leone he is also musically talented.

“I love to mix up with musicians and I have a special passion for music, he said.

“Music is my second talent,” Quee told footballsierraleone.net.

Nickname Wiz-boy has over 12 international caps for Sierra Leone and was recently part of the Leone Stars 2-1 victory over Kenya in the opener of the 2019 African Nations Cup qualifiers.

He scored three goals in eighteen appearances for UMF Víkingur since joining on loan on a two-year deal in May 2017.

Kei Kamara joins 100 Major League Soccer Club

Kei Kamara scored his 100th MLS regular season goal in the 28th minute and Brek Shea doubles their lead early in the second half as Vancouver Whitecaps beat the Houston Dynamo 2-1 on Saturday night at BBVA Compass Stadium.

“It’s an honour to really be playing for the Whitecaps now and reaching this milestone for this club,” said Kamara, who was playing in his overall 300th MLS games. “Not just that, I’m playing against one of the teams I used to play with the Dynamo. Kei Kamara poised to make 300th MLS’s career appearance

“We were able to get three points tonight so not just the goal or the milestone, it’s a big game so it was good.”

Kamara has scored twice in as many games. The Sierra Leone-born, in his 12th season in MLS, has scored goals for the Whitecaps, Columbus Crew SC, Sporting KC, Houston, San Jose Earthquakes and New England Revolution.

He becomes the 10th player to achieve the milestone, last reached by Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski on May 24, 2015.

Kamara is resilient of one greater milestone – that is winning his first MLS Cup.

“One thing that’s not under my belt is a championship ring,” Kamara said. “That’s the focus, that’s what I’m playing for right now and hopefully I’m able to get to that pretty soon.”
