Ivorian midfielder Franck Kessie pens Barcelona deal

Ivorian midfielder Franck Kessie has signed for Spanish La Liga giants Barcelona on a four-year deal from AC Milan on a free transfer.

The 25-year-old, who helped Milan win the Serie A title last season, has been described by Barcelona as “the complete midfielder.”

The former Cesena player, who was born in Ouragahio, started his career at Stella Club d’Adjame before moving to Italy in 2014 to sign for Atalanta, and he scored twice on his Serie A debut.

He made his debut for Milan and helped the club to win the first leg of the Europa League qualification match against CS U Craiova on the 27 July 2017/2018 season.

After two years on loan at Milan, Kessie completed a €33 million move to the San Siro in 2019.

Kessie made his debut for Ivory Coast in 2014 and has won a total of 56 international caps.

Women’s Afcon: Senegal, Tunisia register wins

The 12th edition of the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations continues on Sunday as Teranga Lionesses defeated Uganda 2-0 in Group A to top the standings in Group A.

The Teranga Lionesses proved that they are ready to go as far as possible after scoring twice without conceding.

Diakhaté Ndeye opened the scoring for the Senegalese team with a penalty in the 39th minute after Tunisian referee Dorsaf Ganouati had no hesitation in pointing to the spot after a foul on Senegal’s 16-year-old striker Hapsatou Diallo.

Senegal doubled their lead through Nguenar Ndiaye five minutes after the break, who finished clinically after being put through by the young rising star of Senegalese football, Hapsatou Diallo.

Burkina Faso will be Senegal’s next opponent on Tuesday 5 July at 18h00 at the Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex.

In the day’s other matches, Zambia played to a goalless draw against Cameroon Lionesses at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca.

As a result, Cameroon stood second behind Tunisia, who defeated tournament debutants Togo 4-1 in their TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2022 opener on Sunday.

The North African open their scoring inside the opening 15 seconds through rising star Meriem Houij, who was elected Woman of the Match.

And in the 22nd minute, Togo was awarded a penalty, with captain Odette Gnintegma taking on the responsibilities and tucking away her penalty neatly to become Togo’s first scorer in the history of this competition.

Tunisia scored three more goals to wrap up their opener with a super win.

After 11 months out, Sankoh features in Stuttgart win

Sierra Leone native Mohamed Sankoh has returned to full action following 11 months out injured. The 18-year-old attacker was back in action for German Bundesliga side VfB’s Stuttgart as they thrashed SV Böblingen on Saturday.

Stuttgart walloped the host team 7-1 in their first pre-season friendly, and head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo was pleased.

Sankoh, who extended his contract in November 2021 until 2026, suffered a knee injury in Stuttgart’s 5-1 triumph over Greuther Fürth in August 2021.

It was his first appearance for the 2021/2022 season but unfortunately happened to be his last for the season.

“It was a successful first test in a great atmosphere with many spectators against an opponent who didn’t limit themselves to defending but played courageous football.

“We only started training a week ago – of course, the details of the processes don’t yet fit in. What I liked was the willingness with which our players acted,” VfB head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo was quoted as saying.

CAF confirm new date for 2023 Africa Cup of Nations

The Confederation of African football, CAF, have revealed new dates for the 34th edition of the competition.

Initially scheduled for Ivory Coast next year in June/July, but as a result of the expected bad weather conditions, Caf has decided to move the continental showpiece to January 2024.

CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe stated on Sunday that the 34th edition, which was initially scheduled for June 23 to July 23, 2023, will not be played as planned due to the weather conditions in the West African country.

“The 2023 Afcon will now be played between January and February 2024,” Mostepe told the media during a press conference in Morocco.

“This is one of the issues we discussed during our congress meeting here in Morocco as the official dates will be communicated later.

Morocco kickstart WAFCON with win over Burkina Faso

Hosts Morocco kickstarts the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign off to a bright start after their hard-fought 1-0 win over a gallant Burkina Faso at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex.

The Atlas ladies narrowly won their Group A opener as captain Ghizlane Chebbak’s scored in the 29th minute.

The strike lacked power but was good enough to deceive Burkinabe goalkeeper Mariam Ouattara, 19, who could have done better.

The host nation’s next outing in the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations will be against Uganda in Rabat on Tuesday.

WAFCON matchday two in Group A will take place on Sunday when the Ugandan Cranes open their account against Senegal. Zambian and Cameroon battle it out in their Group B opener at the Stade Mohamed.

It was the first match at a WAFCON final in four years after the 2020 edition was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic, which the Confederation of African Football (Caf) had said it was reluctant to do.
