Miners Leone Rock delivers cash handshake with Premier League

    Sierra Leone mining company Leone Rock Metal Group (LRMG) are paving the way for a solid relationship with an approximately $5000 donation to the country’s Premier League.

    It comes a day after their whipping gesture of NLE 300,000 (Three hundred thousand new Leones) cash boost to the Female Premier League Board.

    The cheque for (NLE 100,000), was warmly received and appreciated by the Sierra Leone Football Association on Wednesday, the 19th of January, at their Secretariat in Freetown In the presence of LRMG’s Salim Sillah, SLFA’s president Thomas Daddy Brima, National Sports Authority’s Steven Kelfala and other dignitaries.

    “This kind gesture by the company is with clean and pure intention to promote sports in the country and not with the intent to compete or out shadow existing football structures.”

    “Leone Rock Metal Group intends to boost football under its Corporate Social Responsibility projects with a focus on gender equality,” LRMG said in their statement.

    Acknowledging the handout, President Brima thanked the Largest Iron ore producer in Sierra Leone for their brave intervention even when they did not call upon them. He further assured the company of the association’s commitment to ensuring the purpose of the competition is achieved.

    To climax the event, President Brima proudly handed three sets of national team jerseys to the Leone Rock Metal Group as part of their culture.

    Sesay signs for Hong Kong Super League side Lee Man

    Hong Kong professional football club based in Tseung Kwan O, Lee Man, have signed Sierra Leone defender Alie Sesay on a one-and-half-year deal.

    The club confirmed the news on its Facebook and Instagram pages. Presently they’re topping the Super League after eight games with 21 points. 

    Last season, the Sesay, 28, who came through Leicester’s academy before joining Colchester United on loan in 2014, played for Indonesian side PSIS Semarang, where he made 27 appearances.

    He made his Sierra Leone debut under coach Atto Mensah during the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualification match against Cameroon on 11 October 2014.

    He was part of the Leone Stars 2023 AFCON qualifiers in the 2-1 defeat to Nigeria and 2-2 against Guinea-Gissua.

    Ex-Leicester graduate, Since 2017, has played for clubs in Sweden, Greece, Bulgaria, Azerbaijan & Indonesia.

    Women’s league gets Leone Rock cash boost

    Women’s league gets Leone Rock cash boost

      Ahead of the second phase of the Sierra Leone Women’s Premier League, Leone Rock Metal Group on Wednesday donated a sum of 30 million old Leones to the female Premiere League Board in Freetown.

      Their gesture comes as a bid to showcase the camaraderie, leadership, commitment, and hard work that lead to success on the field and in life. 

      “Football unites millions of people who forget their differences and come together to watch their favourite sport,” LRMG noted.

      In front of media personality, the head of the Female Football League – Asmaa James, the Director of Competitions and Club Licenses SLFA – Sorie Ibrahim Sesay and the Director of CEO office LRMG – Salim Sillah, the handout was completed at the FA’s headquarters in Freetown on Wednesday 18th January 2023.

      LRMG Director Salim Sillah highlighted that the gesture is part of the company’s inclusive strive towards gender equality in sports and all of its CSR projects. 

      Top media personality Aasma James, who is the new chairperson for Sierra Leone Women’s Premier League Board, was pleased after receiving the cash boost.

      Asma James noted, “As a board, we are grateful, especially at a time when the second phase of the league is about to commence.”

      Kahunla Queens’ are top of the maiden Women’s league with 30 points after eleven first rounds of matches. Mogbwemo Queens are in the second spot with 29 points.

      PrvaLiga second phase: Kargbo Jr raring to go

      Ibrahim Kargbo Jr is raring to go ahead of the second round of the Slovenian PrvaLiga season with NK Celje.

      Celje will kick start the second phase on February 11 against NS Mura at home. Kargbo, 23, made his debut with NK Celje in a 1-1 draw against Dinamo Zagreb in a friendly game on Sunday after he penned a permanent deal. 

      The Belgium youth International, who was involved in a 32nd-minute collision with goalkeeper Nikola Vasil in Olimpik Donetsk’s 2-1 win over Zorya Luhansk on Wednesday, April 28th 2021, in the Ukrainian top tier, is pleased with his present form and excited ahead of the second phase of the campaign.

      “At the moment, I am feeling good and ready for the second phase of the season. We are presently in pre-season. I made my debut in our draw against Dinamo Zagreb last Sunday,” Kargbo to FSL News.

      “Returning to Slovenia has helped me a lot. Regarding my form, after being out for a while remains a priority. We will be travelling to Croatia for a friendly in two days which I am looking forward to.”

      “I feel I am in the right place to continue where I left off. I am excited that the club is fighting for a place in the Conference League. As a result, I want to be at my best to help the team.”

      Celje, presenting sitting third in their league, one point behind second-place side FC Koper. 

      In August 2022, Kargbo was loaned to Cypriot club Doxa Katokopias.

      After half a season in Cyprus, he made seven league appearances before he rejoined Slovenia’s top side on a permanent deal.

      Born in Sierra Leone, Kargbo junior has represented Belgium at the junior international level.

      Kevin Wright pens USL Oakland Roots deal

      Oakland Roots have announced the signing of Sierra Leone International left-back Kevin Wright ahead of the 2023 USL Championship Season.

      Wright, 27, who last signed for Apollon Smymis, has been a key player for the Leone Stars after his debut in 2020.

      “We are very excited to add a left back in Kevin Wright, who comes to us with a breadth of experience in England and Scandinavia,” said Roots Technical Director Jordan Ferrell.

      “Kevin fits with the attacking wingback profile that fits with our style of play, and we look forward to seeing him on the field soon.”

      He was part of the Chelsea academy team in 2005 and went on to play for the club’s development squad between 2014 and 2016 before his departure. 

      Wright helped Chelsea lift the FA Youth Cup in 2014. He made his professional debut for Carlisle United in 2016-2017 before moving to the Norwegian second division Fredrikstad for the 2017-2018 season. 

      He played for Örebro in the Swedish Allsvenskan between the 2019/2021 seasons, where he made over 60 appearances.

      Wright most recently spent time with Apollon Smyrnis in the Greek second tier in 2022. 

      He played an integral part in the Sierra Leone African Cup Nations sqaud in Cameroon 2022, where the Leone Stars played goalless with Algeria, a 2-2 against Ivory Coast and a 1-0 defeat to Equatorial Guinea.
