Guinea defeated neighbours Sierra Leone 1-0 in their second match of the WAFU-A Women’s Cup at Estadio Marcelo Leitao, Sal, Cape Verde, on Monday.

Coach Ernest Hallowell’s side came into matchday two of the competition fully aware that they must avoid defeat if they were to have any chance of progressing to the next stage.

However, it was a much-improved performance compared to the 4-1 thrashing to the Gambia on the opening day.

The Guineans capitalised on a Sierra Leone defensive blunder late on in the 85 minutes to win the tie.

Sierra Queens, who wasted a couple of good chances, will face Senegal, who defeated Guinea 4-0 in their opener in their final group B contest on Wednesday.

In the other Group B tie on Monday, the Senegalese prove too strong for the Gambia after hammering their opponent 4-1 and all four goals coming from Habsatou Malado Diallo.

As a result, they booked their place in the semi-finals after scoring eight goals in their opening two matches.

Cathrine Jatta, author of the only Gambian goal, could not do better.

Group B final matches are set for Wednesday, January 25 – Guinea battles with the Gambia while Sierra Leone faces already qualified Senegal.

And the winner between Guinea and Gambia will join Senegal for the rest of the tournament. 

Sierra Leone looks to be heading home after conceding five goals without a point.

Sierra Leone’s Sierra Queens suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to the Gambians in their WAFU Zone A opener at the Estadio Municipal Marcelo Leito Sal, Cape Verde. in Cape Verde.

Four goals by the Queen Scorpions Catherine Jatta placed the Gambia second in Group B Senegal top of the table following their 4-0 win against Guinea.

Sierra Leone got a consolation goal through Matilda Kabba of Kahunla Queens.

Their heavy hammering of Sierra Leone means Gambia joins Senegal at the top of the group with 3 points each.

Sierra Leone and Guinean occupy the 3rd and 4th place, respectively.

Sierra Queens are to resume training on Sunday evening at the Estadio Municipal Marcelo Leito as they prepare to take on Guinea in their second group stage match on Monday, 23rd January.

Sierra Leone mining company Leone Rock Metal Group (LRMG) are paving the way for a solid relationship with an approximately $5000 donation to the country’s Premier League.

It comes a day after their whipping gesture of NLE 300,000 (Three hundred thousand new Leones) cash boost to the Female Premier League Board.

The cheque for (NLE 100,000), was warmly received and appreciated by the Sierra Leone Football Association on Wednesday, the 19th of January, at their Secretariat in Freetown In the presence of LRMG’s Salim Sillah, SLFA’s president Thomas Daddy Brima, National Sports Authority’s Steven Kelfala and other dignitaries.

“This kind gesture by the company is with clean and pure intention to promote sports in the country and not with the intent to compete or out shadow existing football structures.”

“Leone Rock Metal Group intends to boost football under its Corporate Social Responsibility projects with a focus on gender equality,” LRMG said in their statement.

Acknowledging the handout, President Brima thanked the Largest Iron ore producer in Sierra Leone for their brave intervention even when they did not call upon them. He further assured the company of the association’s commitment to ensuring the purpose of the competition is achieved.

To climax the event, President Brima proudly handed three sets of national team jerseys to the Leone Rock Metal Group as part of their culture.
