Al Merrikh, Sundowns share CAF CL spoils in Cairo

Sudanese side Al Merrikh and South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns played to a goalless draw in their second TotalEnergies CAF Champions League Group A match at the Al Salam Stadium in Cairo on Saturday.

Sundowns who started their campaign with a 1-0 win against another Sudanese side Al Hilal last weekend were the most enterprising but couldn’t crack for an opening goal.

As a result, they top of their group with four points after two matches.

The Brazilians created scoring chances, pinned Merreikh in their own half, but Monged Abuzaid in the Sudanese’s goal couldn’t let anything pass.

Merrikh struggled to create chances but will take in a draw in their first match of the group phase, a result that sees them sit third in the group.

Record 10-time champions Ahly and one-time winners Sundowns were placed in Group A with Sudanese clubs Al Hilal and Al Merrikh.

Amadou Bakayoko extends Bolton tally to nine

Sierra Leone-born Amadou Bakayoko took his tally to nine goals of the season as Bolton Wanderers returned to winning ways with an emphatic 4-0 Sky Bet League One victory over AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

As a result, the Whites moved up to tenth in their Sky Bet League One standings.

Bakakoyo accounted for his ninth, top scorer Dapo Afolayan netted his 13th of the season and Dion Charles, his sixth goal in eight games.

Iceland international Bodvarsson headed in Aaron Morley’s 36th-minute corner to give the Trotters the lead.

The visitors have never beaten Bolton and that record continued as Ian Evatt’s side struck twice in 11 second-half minutes to revive their outside play-off ambitions.

Afolayan virtually walked the ball into an empty net after Charles prodded the ball through.

Charles sealed Bolton’s seventh win in nine games with a right-footed finish after 67 minutes before Bakayoko headed in Marlon Fossey’s cross to complete the rout three minutes from time.

Kwame Nketiah registered the only goal for the away side to ensure a second straight loss for the Cavaliers in the ongoing Sierra Leone Premier League season.

As a result, Kallon FC has slipped down to eighth in the pecking other after the two disappointing results.

Not many will have fancied the Freetown City side to overcome their counterpart as this result moved them up to fifth on the log.

On Monday, away from home against Diamond Stars, Kallon FC suffered a 2-1 defeat in Koidu before their home slumber.

The season continues today with two matches across the country. Bo Rangers will take on Bai Bureh Warriors as Anti-Drugs hosts Ole Edwardians.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the Ports Authority and Kamboi Eagles played to a goalless draw in Freetown.

Newcomers Amazulu triumph over Guinean giant Horoya

Newcomers AmaZulu defeated Guinean giant side Horoya 1-0 at Moses Mabhida Stadium in their second CAF Champions League Group B match on Friday.

The South African outfit registered their first points in Group after Augustine Mulenga assisted Amigo Memela, who took a deft touch to hand AmaZulu their lead in the 31st-minute.

The West African side started brightly but somehow failed to capitalise on a couple of chances.

The home side could have doubled their lead five minutes to the break when Zambian Mulenga provided a second with another cross from the left, but Abraham Majok’s header was blocked a yard from the line by Khadim Diaw.

In the second half, Horoya was still in it as they came close twice in the 49th minute, but couldn’t punish a mistake from an AmaZulu defender.

In the same group, Raja Club Athletic won 1-0 away to Algeria’s ES Setif to move top of Group B as the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League group phase rolled into matchday two on Friday.

At the Stade 5 Juillet in Algiers, Mohamed Zrida scored in the 71st minute as visitors Raja picked up a consecutive 1-0 victory to move top of the group with six points.

AmaZulu host Entente Setif on Friday while Horoya must make a long trip to Morocco.

Free-agent Kei Kamara joins ninth MLS club CF Montreal

Free-agent Kei Kamara joins ninth MLS club CF Montreal

CF Montréal have confirmed the signing of veteran MLS striker Kei Kamara for the 2022 MLS season with an option year for 2023, the club announced Friday.

The fifth all-time leading scorer has been handed another opportunity to continue in Major League Soccer, where he has scored 130 goals (and 47 assists) across 359 regular-season matches. He’s only three goals behind Jaime Moreno (133) and four behind Jeff Cunningham (134) in the leaderboard.

“In the absence of numerous attacking options through either injury or illness, namely that of young forward Ivy Brisma, who had a strong preseason training camp, we had to take measures to strengthen the roster,” sporting director Olivier Renard said in a release. “Kei is a highly experienced player in MLS whose offensive abilities will help us both on the pitch and in the locker room with our young group of players. We’re happy to welcome him to the club.”

It’s Kamara’s ninth MLS team after successful spells with the Columbus CrewSporting Kansas City and more. Kamara, 37, scored five goals in fourteen matches for HIFK Fotboll in Finland last season before leaving the club.

He was part of the Sierra Leone side during the just concluded 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, where he missed the decisive penalty that could have qualified the West African Nations to the round of sixteen for the first time in their history.

Horoya set for Amazulu CAF Champions League test

Horoya set for Amazulu CAF Champions League test

After their opening defeat in the group stage of this year’s CAF Champions League, Guinean giant outfit Horoya set for a new challenge against South African newcomers Amazulu.

Both Group B sides will lock horns at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in South Africa on Friday. A crunch tie both teams out to win following their first leg poor outings in the group.

Amazulu lost to Raja Club Athletic from a Mohsine Moutaouali lone goal as they marked their debut in the prestigious club football competition on 12 February.

Horoya suffered a home defeat to ES Setif through Ahmed Kendouci only goal as they began their TotalEnergies CAF Champions League campaign in disappointment.

Thembela Sikhakhane, the AmaZulu right-back, is optimistic his side can produce the result at home if they stick to their game plan.

“We have an advantage of playing at home [against Horoya],” right-back Thembela Sikhakhane said.

“We want to do better in order to qualify for the last eight. I think because we’re new in this competition it’s important that we stick to our game plan.

“We’ve played some strong matches like our clash against TP Mazembe [of DRC in the elimination stages], so we must know our story against Horoya.”
