Algeria beat Côte d’Ivoire to reach CHAN semi-finals

Algeria beat Côte d’Ivoire to reach CHAN semi-finals

Hosts Algeria defeated Ivory Coast 1-0 to clinch the first semi-final spot at Stade de Nelson Mandela on Friday.

The North African nation squeezed into the seventh edition of the African Nations Championship semis through Ayem Mahious’s spot-kick. A late Aimen Mahious penalty gives Algeria the victory in the first quarter-final of the day.

As a result, Algeria will wait on the winner between Niger and Ghana to determine their semi-final opponent, set to take place at the Miloud Hadefi Stadium in Oran on Tuesday.

In the second quarter-final, Senegal midfielder Lamine Camara was perfect from 12 yards to guide his side to a 1-0 victory over neighbours Mauritania in a highly contested TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) quarter-final tie in Annaba on Friday.

The 19-year-old was precise as he guided his penalty past Mauritanian goalkeeper Namori Diaw in fine fashion in the 34th minute after defender Beibou pulled Moussa Ndiaye in the box as both sets of players waited for a corner kick.

Senegal held on to register a victory and book a slot in the last four of the TotalEnergies CHAN 2022 edition in Algeria. They will now face the winner between debutants Madagascar and Mozambique.

Conde speaks ahead of Mozambique, Madagascar cracker

Conde speaks ahead of Mozambique, Madagascar cracker

Mozambique coach Chiquinho Conde is optimistic ahead of their Total Energies African Nations Championship quarter-final match against Madagascar on Saturday.

Kick-off at the Chahid Hamlaoui Stadium will be at 17H00 local time.

Chiquinho Conde, 57, who was appointed a year ago, guided the Mambas to their first-ever CHAN quarter-final in a senior CAF competition after finishing second in a tough group A ahead of Libya and Ethiopia.

“This is our second CHAN tournament. Our first was in 2014 in South Africa, where we finished with zero points. We are here in Algeria now and have made history by making it into the quarter-finals with four points.

The task is not complete yet – because we are re-writing the history books of Mozambiquan football and want to continue doing well,” the outspoken Conde told the CAF website.

“Tomorrow is an important match for us to win, but it will not be easy. They’re favourites because they have a much better scoring record than us and are quite offensive. We have been working hard on different variations to respond to the game, so we will come prepared and do our best to make the people of Mozambique proud.” said Conde.

The winner of the tie will take on whoever comes out top in the quarter-final match between Senegal and Mauritania, set to take place this evening in Annaba.

Mauritania, Niger seal CHAN quarter-final spots

Mauritania and Niger booked their places in the quarterfinals at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Algeria on Tuesday.

Mamadou Sy’s early second-half strike proved pivotal as Mauritania secured a historical last-eight spot after defeating Mali 1-0 at the Miloud Hadefi Stadium in Oran on Tuesday.

The Lions of Chinguetti advanced as Group D leaders on four points, followed by Angola on two as Mali returned home with a single point.

In Group E, Niger stunned 2020 host Cameroon as they booked a quarter-finals spot after a 1-0 triumph at the Stade Olympique d’Oran on Tuesday.

Soumaila Badamassi was the hero for the Menas in their final Group E clash at the Miloud Hadefi Stadium in the Algerian city of Oran.

As a result, Cameroon and Mali were dumped out of the tournament for African Stars as the group phase in Algeria came to a shock-riddled climax.

Two-time runners-up Mali needed only a score draw against Mauritania to top Group D but lost 1-0, with Mamadou Sy scoring the 53rd-minute goal that took his country to the next stage of the competition.

2020 host Cameroon needed only one point to finish first in Group E but fell 1-0 to Niger, who snatched the top spot.

Mauritania locks horns with Senegal at the Stade du 19 Mai 1956 on Friday, while Niger takes on the Black Stars of Ghana in the quarter-final on Saturday at the Miloud Hadefi stadium in Oran.
