Issa Kallon makes first Shanghai Port start

Attacker Issa Kallon was named in  Shanghái Port’s first eleven for the first time in their 2-1 away win over Henan Songshan on Tuesday.

Manager Ivan Leko selected the Sierra Leone International for his first start in six appearances since joining the club in June as a free agent.

The 26-year-old striker, who made 32 starts for Cambuur and contributed five goals last season, played 65-minute before Matías Ezequiel Vargas Martín replaced him.

The win means Shanghai Port are currently seventh in the Chinese Super League table with 28points from sixteen games this season.

During his five-year spell at Cambuur, he made 156 appearances and scored 26 goals and 40 assists.

Meanwhile, Kallon was left out of the Sierra Leone team to face South Africa and DR Congo on September 24th and 27th, respectively.

Sierra Leone coach John Keister has said he wanted to give the winger time to settle in with his new side.

Striker Augustine Williams is delighted to be back

Striker Augustine Williams is delighted to be back

Charleston Battery forward and leading goalscorer Augustine Williams has expressed his delight after being named in the Sierra Leone squad for this month’s friendlies.

Sierra Leone will engage South Africa on September 24 in Johannesburg, South Africa, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo on September 27 in Casablanca, Morocco.

Williams, 25, who missed the last two African Cup of Nations qualifiers against Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau in June, is excited about the upcoming trip to represent Sierra Leone.

“It’s an honour to be called up by the national team again to compete for my country. An amazing feeling to be able to represent over seven million people, that’s something I take with pride,” Williams told the club’s website.

Williams debuted for the Leone Stars on June 15, 2021, during qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) against Benin, where he helped the country qualify for the tournament for the first time in over two decades.

The forward was recalled to Sierra Leone’s squad for the AFCON in January. Williams has made three total appearances for his country.

The call-up for the 25-year-old comes on the heels of the striker’s most prolific scoring season of his career, as he’s tallied 14 goals for the Battery in 2022. This includes a run of five consecutive matches across July and August where he scored a goal, bagging six during that time.

“I’m looking forward to regrouping with the boys again, getting to work and playing against other nations while being able to represent Sierra Leone in the best way possible,” said Williams. “The focus is preparing ourselves and getting the team stronger in all areas to be ready to compete in the AFCON as we reach closer to the qualifying stages again.”

Williams will train and compete with Sierra Leone through the final week of September and will return to Charleston ahead of the away match on October 1 against Hartford Athletic

South Africa’s Broos eyes first win over Sierra Leone

Photo: Mohamed Kamara of Sierra Leone (L) vies for the ball against Katlego Mphela of South Africa during the African Cup of Nations 2012 qualifying football match between South Africa and Sierra Leone at Mbombela Stadium on October 8, 2011, in Nelspruit.

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has admitted during his team’s press conference at Dobsonville Stadium that this weekend’s friendly against Sierra Leone is to restore confidence in his side.

South Africa, in four meetings, never defeated Sierra Leone as both sides have played to three draws and a win for Sierra Leone in June 2008.

Hugo Broos was speaking ahead of two International friendlies against Sierra Leone on Saturday and Botswana on Tuesday as Bafana Bafana’s first two matches since a 2-1 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifying defeat away to Morocco in June.

Broos said the games against 113th-ranked Sierra Leone and 146th-ranked Botswana aimed at restoring Bafana’s confidence.

He wants to test his players ahead of playing Liberia twice in Afcon qualifiers next year in March.

“Sierra Leone plays similar to Liberia. We have those two very important games in March – playing Sierra Leone can be important preparation.

“The game against Botswana, like I said before, I wanted to have two friendly games in September, so I have that, and we have to try now to win those two games.”

They have struggled to get a positive result in recent matches, but Broos was clear that his team needs to battle a win when they host the west African nation, Sierra Leone, in a friendly at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

The two matches this month will be part of their 2023 African Cup of Nations preparation.

Broos said he would ensure all the players in his 23-man squad play in the coming two friendlies.

CAF CL: Bo Rangers eliminated after defeat in Algeria

Debutants Bo Rangers are out of this year’s CAF Champions League after they suffered a 3-0 defeat at the Stade du 8-Mai-1945 in their second-leg preliminary in Algeria on Saturday.

Both teams played to a goalless draw in the first lg in Liberia’s SDK stadium a week ago in Monrovia.

The competition first-timers were hoping to stun their host, but the Algerian Champions were the better side on the day.

A brace from Karim Aribi in the 86th and 90th minutes completed the home side’s victory after Mouad Hadda had opened the scoring in the 34th-minute first half.

Bo Rangers were without defender Abu Bakarr Samura aka Lucio, due to injury.

In the Second Round, CR Belouizdad will face the winner between Deportivo Mongomo Equatorial Guinean football club and Djoliba Athletic Club Malian football in October.

Deportivo Mongomo Equatorial Guinean won the first leg 2-0 a week ago. They will play the reverse fixture today in Mali.

Clubs that received bye to Second Preliminary Round

Al Ahly (Egypt), Esperance (Tunisia), Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa), Raja Club Athletic (Morocco), TP Mazembe (DR Congo), and Wydad Athletic Club (Morocco).

Horoya AC (Guinea) are through to the next round following the withdrawal of Gambia’s Hawks FC.

Kallon FC progress into CAF Confed Cup second round (Agg 4-0)

CAF Confed Cup: FC Kallon 3-0 Les Buffles (4-0 agg) – Kallon progress to the second round

Sierra Leone CAF Confederation Cup representative FC Kallon were good value for their win with a free-flowing display as striker Alie Conteh scored a hat-trick at the SDK stadium in Liberia on Saturday.

Having secured a 1-0 victory in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup first-leg preliminary over Les Buffles du Borgou at the Stade de l’Amitie in Cotonou, Benin, on Friday, Kallon completed the job with three more goals.

FC Kallon, under the supervision of ex-Sierra Leone international Mohamed Kallon, are through to the second round of the CAF Confederation Cup following their 3-0 win over Les Buffles du Borgou on Saturday.

After wasting several glorious chances in the opening 30th-minute, mainly from Kwame Nketiah, but managed to nick the tie from a goal from Mahmoud Fofanah in the 42ndh minute at the SDK Stadium in Liberia.

Mahmoud Fofanah cleverly danced passed his marker and tried to go solo, but his effort was headed in by striker Alie Conteh in the 64th minute into the top roof of the net.

The visitors, however, late into the first half, rallied for a goal of their own but couldn’t break down a resilient Kallon defence. They went into the break 1-0 goal down.

After the restart, the home side maintained good possession of the ball and took the play to their counterpart.

As a result, striker Alie Conteh completed his hat-trick in quick succession in the 65th and 67th minutes, respectively, as they won 4-0 on aggregate and will wait to know who they face in the second round – between BIDCO Uganda Limited Jinja and Future FC of Egypt.
