Cameroon beat Congo as Mali, Angola share spoils

Jerome Ngom Mbekeli’s second half header was enough as Cameroon secured a 1-0 win over Congo in their opener TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) clash in Oran on Monday.

The 24-year-old, who plays for local side Colombe, rose highest in the 63rd minute to connect Ramses Nguimzeu’s cross from the left to hand the Intermediate Lions the much-needed victory at the Oran Olympic Stadium. With just one team qualifying from the three-team Group E, Cameroon will be on standby on Friday while Congo face Niger at the same venue.

Elsewhere, Mali and Angola played to a high scoring six goal stalemate draw in the opening Group D match of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship at the Miloud Hadefi Stadium in Oran on Monday.

A brace in the first half by Laurindo Aurelio and second half strike by Miguel Viera for Angola was cancelled out by goals from Haidou Sinyako, Yoro Diaby and Ousmane Coulibaly for Mali who put up a brave fight to take away a point.

Cameron with three pojnts will be on standby on Friday while Congo face Niger at the same venue.

Only one team to qualify from the three-team Group E.

CHAN newcomers Madagascar stun Ghana in opener

CHAN newcomers Madagascar stun Ghana in opener

Madagascar included their name in the CHAN history books after defeating Ghana 2-1 in their first-ever game at African Nations Championship on Sunday night in the Algerian city of Constantine.

The southern Africans recorded their much-deserved win and three points to go top of Group C and announce their presence in Algeria in fine fashion.

Goals by Solomampionona Razafindranaivo and Tokinantenaina Randriatsiferana after 10 and 61 minutes gave the Indian Ocean nation a two-goal advantage.

Augustine Agyapong halved the deficit on 67 minutes, but persistent late pressure from the west Africans failed to deliver an equaliser in the Group C opener.

Ghana was awarded a penalty just after the first Malagasy goal and Daniel Afriyie was about to take it when the referee opted to check the VAR touchline monitor, then reversed his decision.

Morocco was due to play Sudan in the first match of a double-header but withdrew from the tournament after being refused permission to fly directly to Constantine.

Algeria closed its airspace to all Moroccan flights in September 2021, a month after severing diplomatic ties, accusing its neighbour of “hostile acts”.

Morocco won the last two editions, hammering Nigeria 4-0 in Casablanca in 2018 and defeating Mali 2-0 in Yaoundé two years ago to become the first back-to-back CHAN champions.

Monday will see the opening matches in two sections with Mali meeting Angola in Group D before Cameroon face Congo Brazzaville in Group E.

Both matches are in Oran. While the CHAN is restricted to footballers playing in their country of birth, matches carry full international status and result count toward the world rankings.

Wigan boss hails Steven Caulker after debut at City Stadium

Wigan boss hails Steven Caulker after debut at City Stadium

Sierra Leone International defender Steven Caulker made his Wigan debut in their 1-1 against former club Cardiff at the City Stadium on Saturday.

The 31-year-old, who played the full throttle of the match, was signed by boss Kolo Touré until the end of the 2022/23 Championship campaign.

And the manager was pleased with the Leone Stars skipper addition to his squad after named Caulker in his starting eleven against Cardiff City.

Wigan Athletic boss Kolo Toure said: “I am pleased with the point. We are trying to build a team with a winning mentality.

“Bringing in players like Steven Caulker has helped us a lot, you can see that. We are working on more new signings, but the squad are doing well, we saw a solid performance, and the boys are together.”

Will Keane’s scored a dramatic late equaliser to rescue a point for Wigan at Cardiff City as they secured a 1-1 draw in south Wales.

The Bluebirds went ahead with nine minutes remaining as Callum O’Dowda fired through a crowded penalty area.

However, Wigan rescued a vital point when Keane finished from close range to earn the Latics a deserved point.

The draw means Cardiff are now winless in nine games and Wigan remains bottom of the English Championship as they try to battle their way out of the relegation tussle.

Last season, the Center-back spent the entire 2021–22 season on loan with fellow Süper Lig side Gaziantep – where he made 29 topflight appearances scoring two goals.

Mahious penalty helps Algeria to opening CHAN win

Aymen Mahious’s penalty helps hosts Algeria to a winning CHAN start at the newly built Nelson Mandela Stadium as they edged Libya 1-0 in CHAN 2022 opener on Friday.

The Desert Foxes’ forward was brought down in the 18-yard box by Libyan goalkeeper Muad Allafi after he was late in his attempt to stop a misplaced back pass from Libyan midfielder Aboulqassim Rajab.

Referee Tom Abongile made no mistake when he pointed to the spot.

Mahious calmly slotted the ball into the left corner sending Allafi the wrong way in the 57th minute to send the home crowd into resounding celebrations that could be heard across the Algerian capital and the country.

Houssem Eddine Mrezigue is the TotalEnergies Man of the Match.

As a result, Algeria will top Group A with three points, whilst Libya sit at the bottom after Friday’s opener.

The capacity of 40,000 spectators at Stade Nelson Mandela included the Algerian Prime Minister, Aymen Benabderrahmane, FIFA president Gianni Infantino, and his CAF counterpart, Patrice Motsepe.
