Steven Caulker excited by new challenge after joining Wigan

Sierra Leone skipper Steven Caulker has signed for Championship side Wigan until the end of the season and could make his debut on Saturday against former side Cardiff a few days after joining Wigan.

The 31-year-old will link up with Kolo Touré’s side on a deal until the end of the 2022/23 Championship campaign.

“Steven Caulker has vast experience in the Premier League with the likes of Tottenham, QPR Cardiff City & Liverpool. The defender will wear the number 29 shirt during his time at the DW Stadium,” Wigan said in their Statement.

“Five years, one hundred and six days after my last game in the championship. I am back, “ Caulker posted on his LinkedIn after signing for the Championship side on Monday.

“Five years 106 days after my last game in the Championship, I am back,” he noted on social media.

“I’ve spent days, weeks, months, and years dreaming that one day I will return.

“I know it’s going to be a huge challenge given our current league position, but it’s a challenge that I am looking forward to.”

Nothing good comes easy, right? A huge thank you to everyone who continues to support me on this journey, it means a lot to know I am not alone.”

Just over a week ago, Caulker parted ways with Turkish side Fatih Karagümrük four months after signing a two-year deal.

He joined the Turkish side from Fenerbahce on a two-year deal in August 2022.

He took part in a total of 7 matches, including 6 Super League and 1 Turkish Ziraat Cup, with the Karagümrük jersey this season, and scored 1 goal while staying on the field for 472 minutes.

The 6ft 3 defender, who played an integral part in the Sierra Leone African Cup of Nations in Cameroon, will start a new club search in the coming days.

Last season, the Center-back spent the entire 2021–22 season on loan with fellow Süper Lig side Gaziantep – where he made 29 topflight appearances scoring two goals.

Caulker started his football career as a 16 old lad at Tottenham with the youth side in 2007.

Transfer: Amadou Bakayoko on Salford City’s radar

Transfer: Amadou Bakayoko on Salford City’s radar

Sierra Leone International Amadou Bakayoko is on Salford City Radar and will be allowed to leave with the right offer this January.

Ian Evatt confirmed there had been recent interest in Bakayoko after he had featured as a substitute in Monday’s 3-0 win at Barnsley.

“We have had bids for Baka, but at the moment, they don’t meet our valuation, so that is the way it stays,” he told The Bolton News.

It is understood that Wanderers have made an offer to loan Southampton striker Dan Nlundulu for the rest of the season, which could mean reduced opportunities for Bakayoko.

Several clubs have been sounded out about the Sierra Leone international, with League Two Salford City understood to be at the front of the queue to sign him in the transfer window.

Bakyoko scored 13 times last season after arriving on a free transfer from Coventry City but has started just five games in the league this term, scoring once.

The 27-year-old has four goals in all competitions and is contracted to the end of the season – but Salford believes he could replace some of the strike power they lost in selling Brandon Thomas-Asante to West Brom in the summer.
