Mauritania, Niger seal CHAN quarter-final spots

Mauritania and Niger booked their places in the quarterfinals at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Algeria on Tuesday.

Mamadou Sy’s early second-half strike proved pivotal as Mauritania secured a historical last-eight spot after defeating Mali 1-0 at the Miloud Hadefi Stadium in Oran on Tuesday.

The Lions of Chinguetti advanced as Group D leaders on four points, followed by Angola on two as Mali returned home with a single point.

In Group E, Niger stunned 2020 host Cameroon as they booked a quarter-finals spot after a 1-0 triumph at the Stade Olympique d’Oran on Tuesday.

Soumaila Badamassi was the hero for the Menas in their final Group E clash at the Miloud Hadefi Stadium in the Algerian city of Oran.

As a result, Cameroon and Mali were dumped out of the tournament for African Stars as the group phase in Algeria came to a shock-riddled climax.

Two-time runners-up Mali needed only a score draw against Mauritania to top Group D but lost 1-0, with Mamadou Sy scoring the 53rd-minute goal that took his country to the next stage of the competition.

2020 host Cameroon needed only one point to finish first in Group E but fell 1-0 to Niger, who snatched the top spot.

Mauritania locks horns with Senegal at the Stade du 19 Mai 1956 on Friday, while Niger takes on the Black Stars of Ghana in the quarter-final on Saturday at the Miloud Hadefi stadium in Oran.

Second straight WAFUA defeat for Sierra Queens

Second straight WAFUA defeat for Sierra Queens

Guinea defeated neighbours Sierra Leone 1-0 in their second match of the WAFU-A Women’s Cup at Estadio Marcelo Leitao, Sal, Cape Verde, on Monday.

Coach Ernest Hallowell’s side came into matchday two of the competition fully aware that they must avoid defeat if they were to have any chance of progressing to the next stage.

However, it was a much-improved performance compared to the 4-1 thrashing to the Gambia on the opening day.

The Guineans capitalised on a Sierra Leone defensive blunder late on in the 85 minutes to win the tie.

Sierra Queens, who wasted a couple of good chances, will face Senegal, who defeated Guinea 4-0 in their opener in their final group B contest on Wednesday.

In the other Group B tie on Monday, the Senegalese prove too strong for the Gambia after hammering their opponent 4-1 and all four goals coming from Habsatou Malado Diallo.

As a result, they booked their place in the semi-finals after scoring eight goals in their opening two matches.

Cathrine Jatta, author of the only Gambian goal, could not do better.

Group B final matches are set for Wednesday, January 25 – Guinea battles with the Gambia while Sierra Leone faces already qualified Senegal.

And the winner between Guinea and Gambia will join Senegal for the rest of the tournament.

Sierra Leone looks to be heading home after conceding five goals without a point.

Senegal coach speaks after CHAN quarter-final spot

Senegalese coach Pape Thiaw, who was speaking after guiding his side to the quarter-final of the 2022 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) ongoing in Algeria, says they wanted to remain in the competition and were pleased.

Senegal proved too strong for DR Congo as they eased past their counterpart with an emphatic 3-0 victory to top Group B on Sunday.

The Teranga Lions thrashed the two-time winners at the 19 May 1956 Stadium in Annaba to secure their place in the knock-out stage of the ongoing tournament in Algeria.

“We’re all pleased to remain in the competition and play in the quarter-final. We finished first from a group of death. Like I said from the beginning – we came here to make a statement. Youth prevailed over experience today,” Pape Thiaw said during his post-match conference.

Goals from Ousmane Diouf, Pape Diallo and an own goal from Siadi Baggio completed the job for Senegal.

“We were faster than DR Congo tonight. That really helped us. When they went down to ten, we did our best to make the most of the numerical advantage.

Thiaw’s side will be in the spotlight again on Friday, January 27, when they play in the quarterfinal for the first time in 12 years against the team that tops Group D.

Hosts Algeria, Mozambique, Ivory Coast and Senegal have all booked their places in the quarterfinals.
