Ex-England defender Steven Caulker confirms Sierra Leone interest

Ex-Spurs and Liverpool defender Steven Caulker has said representing Sierra Leone is something he will be proud of. The defender is one of the players on Sierra Leone radar ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Speaking to the Athletic, Caulker said: “It is a country that is close to my heart, and somewhere I’ve always been made to feel welcome.

Caulker has confirmed that the Sierra Leone Football Association reached out through Carlton [Cole], whose mother is from Sierra Leone.

“Representing Sierra Leone would be something I can be proud of when I look back over my career. I’ll have to earn my place in the team, but it’s an exciting prospect and something I can’t wait to be a part of.”

“They’re in a growing process and have aspirations to qualify for the World Cup. For me, this is an unbelievable opportunity and more than just playing football.

Caulker, 29, recently signed for Turkish Super Lig club Gaziantep, having enjoyed a resurgence since his move to Turkey in 2019 when he signed for Alanyaspor.”

The defender is of Sierra Leonean descent through his grandfather and of Scottish descent through a grandmother.

He won his first cap for England just before age 21 in November 2012.

He has had spells with Cardiff City, Liverpool, Dundee and Alanyaspor in addition to Spurs. He also represented Great Britain at the 2012 London Olympics.

Ex-Örebro striker Alhassan Crespo Kamara retires from football

Ex-Örebro striker Alhassan Crespo Kamara retires from football

Alhassan Crespo Kamara has retired from football at the age of 28 after ten years of professional career.

Kamara racked up over 130 professional appearances since 2011 when he left Sierra Leone to join Bodens BK.

The former Sierra Leone International suffered devastating knee damaged while playing for the Greek side Panetolikos in December 2018.

Kamara was forced off the pitch in their 1-2 away victory over PAE Aris with an apparent patella knee dislocation, and since then, he never fully recovered.

He won over 15 caps for Sierra Leone since making his debut against Cape Verde in the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification tie in June 2012.

Kamara was a pivotal player for Örebro during the 2014 to 2016 seasons. He scored 15 goals in 29 appearances before moving to Häcken, where he played forty games and scored 12 goals.

He took to social media to announced the news. “A few weeks ago, I made one of the toughest decisions of my life. I decided to end my football career. When I injured my knee in Greece in 2018, all the doctors said I would not be able to play football again. I refused to listen and tried to come back anyway. But now, it is no longer possible. I will remain in the football world but in a different way.”

He continued, “Last week, I started a new position within IFK Värnamo where I will work with the development of youth activities, project development and international scouting. I will also work with youth issues within Värnamo Municipality. It has been difficult to accept that my football career is already over, but at the same time, I look forward to the new challenges that await.”
