Horoya out to face Wydad in quarter final decider

Coach Didier Gomes has warned that Horoya AC has to be defensively strong in a bid to outshine their host Wydad Casablanca in CAF Champions League quarterfinal on Saturday, 13 April 2019.

Both sides played to a 0-0 draw in their first leg contest in Guinea last week.

The second leg match is expected to be played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, with kick-off at 21h00 CAT.

The Guinean side, however, despite a goalless first leg still can qualify on the away goals rule with any score draw in the return game.

“We have to be much stronger, despite being consistent. We have to learn to be very serious on the defensive side,” Gomes said ahead of the Wydad contest.

He added, “If we are confident in the defence, the percentage of chances to qualify can go up. It will be a tough match because it is the top African level.”

“I think we going to honour to Guinean football. In any case, we are going to Morocco without fear.”

Horoya held to goalless draw by stubborn Wydad Casablanca

Guinean Champions Horoya AC held to a barren draw by stubborn Wydad Casablanca in the CAF Champions League quarterfinal first-leg match at the Stade du 28 Septembre in Conakry on Saturday.

The Moroccan giants Wydad defensively was great in Conakry and will be hoping to take full advantage in the second-leg clash next weekend.

Horoya often dominated the game but without registering the first-leg goal.

Ultimately, the two teams drew 0-0 on the day with Horoya failing to take advantage of home ground advantage in the two-legged tie.

Cedric Bakambu fires DR Congo past Liberia to secure Afcon ticket

Cedric Bakambu fires DR Congo past Liberia to secure Afcon ticket

DR Congo secured qualification for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Liberia 1-0 at Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa on Sunday.

As a result, the Leopards leapfrogged the Lone Stars in Group G standings thanks to Cedric Bakambu’s only goal.

DR Congo, who before the tie was a point behind Liberia completed their qualifying campaign with nine points from six games, two points behind leaders Zimbabwe.

The home team enjoyed more possessions controlled the tempo of the game, though they lacked the energy and pace in the final third to really trouble Liberia’s defence.

The visitors had the best chance of the first half in the 36th minute, with a corner kick allowing Terrence Tisdell to send an effort on target, but it wasn’t enough to get the better of goalkeeper Ley Matampi.

The game was evenly balanced at half time, but the Leopards turned it in their favour seven minutes after the restart with Tresor Mputu providing a fine pass to set up Cedric Bakambu, who coolly finished past Ashley Williams to put the hosts 1-0 up.

Liberia looked for a way back into the game, which included sending on Newcastle United midfielder Mohammed Sangare for his international debut, but they were stymied by the resilient home side.

It was nonetheless a tense finish to the match, as the away side only need a goal for a draw but they were unable to find any.
