The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations host nation, Cameroon have announced that it will revert to its former time slot of January and February for the next edition.

The last edition in 2019 in Egypt was the first edition to be held in the summer.

Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) and the tournament’s organising committee have confirmed that the tournament will be played from January 9 to February 6, 2021, after a meeting with Confederation of African Football (CAF) chief Ahmad Ahmad in Yaounde.

A statement published on the official Fefacfoot official twitter account confirmed the news.

The tournament was moved to a June-July slot for last year’s first 24-team edition in Egypt, in large part to avoid clashing with the European club season.

Baghdad Bounedjah’s early goal ensure Algeria won its first Africa Cup of Nations title in 29 years and the first 24 teams tournament with a 1- 0 win over Senegal in Cairo.

CAFCL: Referee rescue after Kabylie denied penalty

CAFCL: Referee rescue after Kabylie denied penalty

Rwandan referee was rescued by Algerian police after a vital Group D showdown between JS Kabylie and Moroccan side Raja Casablanca ended in controversy.

The home side was denied a blatant penalty on Friday during a CAF Champions League round four contest which ended in a 0-0 draw.

As a result, JS Kabylie in third behind Espérance Sportive de Tunis and Raja Casablanca with two vital games to go.

TV replays showed the ball hitting the outstretched right arm of a Raja player inside the box. Referee Louis Hakizimana appeared to have a clear view of the incident, but ignored penalty appeals and waved play on three minutes into stoppage time in northern city Tizi Ouzou.

Following the final whistle, furious Algerian players approached the referee, and some were restrained by teammates. Thanks to the Algerian Police, who moved in quickly surrounded the referee and escorted him to safety.

The home side dominated possession but could not open the defence of a Raja side that came to Algeria determined not to lose.

Elsewhere, five-time champions Zamalek of Egypt defeat Zesco United of Zambia 2-0 in Cairo and move closer to the knockout stages from Group A.

Achraf Bencharki netted his fifth Champions League goal this season on four minutes by nodding a cross from fellow Moroccan Mohamed Ounajem past goalkeeper Jacob Banda.

Benchmark created the second goal after 89 minutes for rising star Mostafa Mohamed, who claimed his sixth goal of the African campaign with a tap-in.

Mohamed, who is being compared to Egyptian legend Hossam Hassan, is second in the scorer’s chart behind nine-goal Karim Aribi from Tunisian club Etoile Sahel.

TP Mazembe of DR Congo and Zamalek have seven points apiece and Zesco and Primeiro Agosto of Angola two each ahead of a clash between the top and bottom clubs in Lubumbashi Saturday.

Maximum points for Mazembe, whose 11 titles make them the second most successful club in CAF competitions, will guarantee a quarterfinals place.

Senegal’s Sadio Mane has expressed his delight after being crowned 2019 CAF African Player of the Year with Mohamed Salah finishing second.

“I am really happy at the same time, I am proud to win this award,” said Mane at the ceremony organised by the Confederation of African Football in the Egyptian Red Sea city of Hurghada.

Mane picked up 477 votes to Salah’s 325, with Manchester City winger Mahrez receiving 267 votes.

Mane and his Liverpool teammate, Salah were both named in the final three for the award, with Man City‘s Riyad Mahrez lining up alongside the Reds duo.

Liverpool’s No. 10 clinched the award, which took place in Egypt, for the first time having finished second in the last two years while coming third in 2016.

The Senegalese international, exponential rise continues, having proven key to Liverpool’s Champions League, Super Cup, Club World Cup and recent Premier League success.

His 2019 also saw him named as the Premier League‘s joint-highest goalscorer alongside Salah and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with 22, where his calendar year totalled 31 goals across all competitions for the Reds.

He was instrumental in helping Senegal to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations over the summer, where his side fell to a narrow defeat at the hands of Mahrez’s Algeria.

Salah, meanwhile, has relinquished his hold on the title having been named Africa’s best footballer for two years running despite matching Mane’s title haul and netting an impressive 25 goals for Liverpool throughout the year.

Having finished fourth in the Ballon d’Or, being named the best player in Africa caps off what was a stunning year for Mane – and at his current pace, 2020 could yet be just as memorable and rewarding.
