Former South African international defender Radebe and former Ivorian striker Kalou will join CAF competitions director Samson Adamu on stage for the draw.

Egypt appoint new Pharaohs’ boss Ehab Galal

Egypt have appointed Ehab Galal as the new national coach of the Pharaohs, succeeding Carlos Queiroz, BBC Sports reports.

Galal, 54, has been in charge of big-spending Pyramids since September, guiding the Cairo-based outfit to the quarter-finals of the Caf Confederation Cup.

Queiroz only joined Egypt last September but parted ways with the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) after failing to qualify for the 2022 World Cup last month.

The North Africans missed out on a place in Qatar after being beaten by Senegal on penalties – having also lost the Africa Cup of Nations final in February to the same opposition on spot-kicks.

Galal, who leaves Pyramids third in the Egyptian league, has managed several club sides including Zamalek, El Masry, El Makkasa, Ismaily and Al Ahly Tripoli.

Record seven-time African champions Egypt await the 2023 Nations Cup qualifying group draw, which will take place on Tuesday, 19 April.

Ivory Coast part ways with Patrice Beaumelle

Ivory Coast part ways with Patrice Beaumelle

Ivory Coast’s football federation (FIF) has decided against renewing the contract of national team coach Patrice Beaumelle, whose original deal ended last week, BBC Sports reports.

The 43-year-old failed to lead the Elephants to the play-offs for the 2022 World Cup, with the West Africans then suffering a last-16 exit at the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year.

Two-time African champions Ivory Coast were beaten by Egypt on penalties following a 0-0 draw in Cameroon.

After failing to progress from their World Cup qualifying group, Frenchman Beaumelle accused world governing body Fifa of “killing African football” by only allowing five spots for the continent at the tournament.

Beaumelle, who was assistant to Herve Renard when the Ivorians won the Nations Cup in 2015, had been in charge of the side since March 2020.

He previously had a stint in charge of Zambia, having also served as Renard’s assistant with the Chipolopolo.

A normalisation committee, installed by Fifa, is running FIF ahead of presidential elections on 23 April and announced the decision on Monday.

“The committee salutes [Beaumelle’s] human qualities, commitment, professionalism, humility and discretion,” a statement on the FIF website said.

“While welcoming the open-mindedness of the French technician and the good collaboration with the FIF, the committee wishes him a happy continuation of his career.”

Ivory Coast become the latest African country to part company with their boss, with Burkina Faso and Mali also searching for new coaches.

The Elephants await the draw for the group stage of qualifying for the 2023 Nations Cup – a tournament Ivory Coast is set to host – which will take place on Tuesday, 19 April.

Niger, Ghana to host WAFU B tournaments this year

Niger, Ghana to host WAFU B tournaments this year

The West Africa Football Union Zone B has named Niger and Ghana as hosts of the regional body’s U20 and U17 Championships, respectively, this year.

The regional governing body confirmed the selection of Niger as the host country for the 2022 U20 Cup of Nations on Thursday.

The biennial tournament, which also serves as the qualification for the TotalEnergies U20 Africa Cup of Nations, will get the organisation’s activities underway for this year.

It will be held in the capital Niamey from May 7 to May 20, 2022.

Titleholders Ghana will compete with rivals Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Benin, Togo and hosts Niger for the coveted trophy. They will also be vying for places at the 2023 edition of the U20 AFCON.

The Black Satellites came from behind to beat Burkina Faso 2-1 to win the 2020 Championship at the Stade Charles De Gaulles in Porto Novo, Benin.

Ghana went ahead to conquer the rest of Africa at the main tournament in Mauritania, beating Uganda 2-0 in the finals in Nouakchott to win their fourth title in the history of the tournament.

The next U20 AFCON tournament will take place in Egypt from February 18, 2023, to March 12, 2022. The top four teams will qualify for the FIFA U20 World Cup held in Indonesia later that year.

Meanwhile, the leadership of WAFU Zone B has settled on the Ghanaian city of Cape Coast – as hosts for the 2022 U-17 Cup of Nations in June.

The Zone B Championship, which serves as qualifiers for the TotalEnergies Africa U17 Cup of Nations, will be hosted in the city in the central part of Ghana.

It will be staged from Saturday, June 11, to Friday, June 24, 2022.

The tournament will feature host Ghana, defending Champions Cote D’Ivoire, giants Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Togo, Benin and Niger.

The participating team will vie for the trophy and tickets to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Botswana start Women’s AFCON preparations

Botswana start Women’s AFCON preparations

The Botswana women’s team have started their preparations ahead of their maiden TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The Mares knocked out Zimbabwe in the last round of the qualifiers to book a spot in the competition scheduled for 2-23 July in Morocco.

Togo, Burkina Faso and Burundi are the other debutants in this year’s tournament.

Zambia and South Africa make it three COSAFA nations that have qualified for the Women’s AFCON.

Coach Gaoletlhoo Nkutlwisang’s charges are currently in camp where she has called up new players in order to create a bigger pool and competition in her squad.

Nkutlwisang will host a series of camps in the build-up to the competition before she announces her final squad.

“I have called a few more players to create competition, no one should be comfortable, we all need to work hard to be ready for WAFCON. We need all players to know the philosophy and what we expect of them, hence why we will have three players to six players in a position. WAFCON is not far so we also need to closely observe our fitness,” she told Cosafa.com.

The Mares will be in camp until 15 April.

South Sudan, eSwatini & two others progress to AFCON 2023 qualifiers

South Sudan, eSwatini & two others progress to AFCON 2023 qualifiers

South Sudan, Sao Tome and Principe, eSwatini and Lesotho have earned themselves berths in the group phase of the qualifiers for the 2023 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after winning their preliminary round second leg matches on Sunday.

The results from the second leg now mean all but one of the five available group stage slots have been filled. Gambia play with Chad in the last preliminary qualification round match on Tuesday.

Mauritius 3-3 Sao Tome and Principe

Sao Tome managed to squeeze through thanks to their 1-0 victory at home last weekend, after a high scoring draw in the return tie.

Mauritius needed a win of more than two goals to progress to the next round, but Sao Tome, who are eying a first-ever qualification to the Cup of Nations, managed to see off the result.

South Sudan 1-0 Djibouti

South Sudan also progressed to the group stages after edging out Djibouti by a solitary goal at the St. Mary’s Stadium in Kampala.

Peter Chol struck the lone goal 10 minutes after the break to hand the Bright Stars a ticket to the group phase with a 5-2 aggregate result, having won the first leg 4-2 at the Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria, Egypt, last week.

Meanwhile, eSwatini progressed after beating Somalia 2-1 in the return leg, going through 5-1 on aggregate after winning the first leg in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania 3-0.

Lesotho also went through with a 3-1 score-line against Seychelles, ensuring they saw the tie to the end at home, having drawn 0-0 in the first leg. Katleho Makateng struck a brace with Sera Motebang adding a third. Seychelles’ consolation was from the penalty spot.
