FIFA hands one-match stadium bans to Senegal and Nigeria

  • FIFA issued a raft of sanctions worldwide after studying dozens of cases from qualifying games for the forthcoming World Cup in Qatar.

The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has ordered African champions Senegal and Nigeria to play one match behind closed doors after crowd disorder during last month’s 2022 World Cup playoffs.

Fans shone laser pointers at Egypt star Mohamed Salah as he missed in the penalty shootout, won by Senegal, in the second leg in Dakar.

Senegal was fined 175,000 Swiss francs ($180,000) over several incidents, including a pitch invasion, an offensive banner and for failing “to ensure that law and order are maintained in the stadium”.

The ruling body issued a raft of sanctions worldwide after studying dozens of cases from World Cup qualifying games played since the start of the year.

Nigeria was given a one-game stadium closure and fined 150,000 Swiss francs ($153,000) after fans invaded the pitch in Abuja following their playoff defeat by Ghana.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo and Lebanon received similar punishments following disturbances at games against Morocco and Syria, respectively.

Sundowns crowned champions after goalless draw Cape Town

Mamelodi Sundowns have been crowned South African Premiership League champions for the fifth time in a row after a goalless draw by Cape Town City at the Loftus Stadium on Wednesday.

Securing a point lifted 12-time champions Sundowns to 58 points with four matches remaining as second-placed Royal AM can reach only 57.

Cape Town stretched an unbeaten league run to nine matches and remains third, boosting its chances of qualifying for one of the two African club competitions next season.

Sundowns and the runners-up go into the Champions League and the club finishing third qualifies for the Confederation Cup along with the FA Cup winners.

A point is all they needed to defend their title. Co-coach Rulani Mokwena congratulated the players for their efforts.

“A special word of congratulations to the players. You run out of superlative words to describe them. I mean what they show today is exactly a reflection of who they are, honest, hard-working, extremely diligent, a pleasure to coach.”

The league title will send the team back to the CAF Champions League after being eliminated from the quarter-finals of the tournament. Mokwena says this is no time to relax.

Sierra Leone to host Afcon 2023 qualifying matches in Guinea

Sierra Leone to host Afcon 2023 qualifying matches in Guinea

The Sierra Football Association (SLFA) have confirmed reaching an agreement with the Guinean FA for the Stade General Lansana Conte in Conakry, Guinea, to host Leone Stars’ upcoming TotalEnergies 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers.

Sierra Leone pitted in Group A in the race to the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations against three-time African champions Nigeria, Guinea Bissau, Sao Tome or Mauritius for a place in Ivory Coast 2023.

The qualification matches are set to begin May 30, 2022, ahead of the tournament proper in Cote d’Ivoire.

A 19-min spot-kick converted by former Sierra Leone striker Kei Kamara was enough as the Leone Stars won the final spot defeating Benin 1-0 to reach the 33rd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations at the same venue in June 2021.

Sierra Leone will open their Group A campaign against Nigeria before hosting Guinea Bissau in the Guinean capital a few days after.

“To rehabilitate the Siaka Steven Stadium, the Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Sports and the National Sports Authority, has recently handed over the facility to the Chinese Aid for a thorough refurbishment and upgrading.

The renovation exercise is said to last for at least two years. Consequently, Leone Stars will now have to play all their AFCON 2023 Qualifying home matches away from home,” the SLFA noted in a statement.

Sierra Leone coach John Keister wants a positive start

Sierra Leone coach John Keister wants a positive start

Sierra Leone coach John Keister speaking for the first time after the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations draw for Côte d’Ivoire 2023, says his Leone Stars side must start with a big ambition.

The Leone Stars of Sierra Leone have been pitted in Group A in the race to the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, set to be held in Ivory Coast next year.

Coach John Keister’s side will face three-time African champions Nigeria, Guinea Bissau, Sao Tome or Mauritius for a place in Ivory Coast 2023.

“We have to start better with a lot of ambition. Our start in the last qualifiers was poor, a disappointing draw against Lesotho at home and a defeat to Benin away. This time, we must do better the mentality of winning is a top priority,” the Manchester-born told FSL News from South Africa.

After 25 years of absence, the former Sierra Leone International guided the Leone Stars to their third Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon 2021 after a 1-0 triumph over Benin.

Sierra Leone was close to making the last sixteen in Cameroon but fell short by a missed Kei Kamara’s spot-kick against Equatorial Guinea last January at the Limbe Stadium.

“We’re going to respect every opponent, but at the same time, having a mindset to better our previous qualification statistics. It is no secret that every African nation has grown – no more big names in African football. We saw that in the just-concluded Afcon in Cameroon.

‘We want to qualify again, so we must approach every game with the right attitude to get positive results from the start, but we know it’s never going to be an easy task regardless of who we start against.”

Recap: Holders Ahly edge Raja in CAF CL quarter-final first leg

Recap: Holders Ahly edge Raja in CAF CL quarter-final first leg

Two first-half goals from Amr El Solia and Hussein El Shahaat were enough as Ahly gained an early 2-1 advantage in their CAF Champions League quarter-final first leg match at the Al Salam Stadium in Cairo on Saturday night.

Raja’s Mohamed Zrida pulled one back at the end of the first 45minutes, but the holders held on to a vital home win.

In the second half, Raja looked determined to find the leveller but suffered a setback when Marouane Hadhoudi was sent off for a foul inside the box. However, El Solia missed the penalty.

Both sides will meet again in Morocco next week in the second deceived contest on April 23 with a spot in the semi-finals at stake.

Elsewhere, two-time winners Wydad Athletic Club beat home side CR Belouizdad 1-0 in the first leg of their TotalEnergies CAF Champions League quarter-final encounter on Saturday.

An early second-half goal from Guy Mbenza was enough as Wydad had the job done to give them an advantage heading into next weekend’s return tie in Casablanca.
