Ivorian midfielder Franck Kessie pens Barcelona deal

Ivorian midfielder Franck Kessie has signed for Spanish La Liga giants Barcelona on a four-year deal from AC Milan on a free transfer.

The 25-year-old, who helped Milan win the Serie A title last season, has been described by Barcelona as “the complete midfielder.”

The former Cesena player, who was born in Ouragahio, started his career at Stella Club d’Adjame before moving to Italy in 2014 to sign for Atalanta, and he scored twice on his Serie A debut.

He made his debut for Milan and helped the club to win the first leg of the Europa League qualification match against CS U Craiova on the 27 July 2017/2018 season.

After two years on loan at Milan, Kessie completed a โ‚ฌ33 million move to the San Siro in 2019.

Kessie made his debut for Ivory Coast in 2014 and has won a total of 56 international caps.

Womenโ€™s Afcon: Senegal, Tunisia register wins

The 12th edition of the TotalEnergies Womenโ€™s Africa Cup of Nations continues on Sunday as Teranga Lionesses defeated Uganda 2-0 in Group A to top the standings in Group A.

The Teranga Lionesses proved that they are ready to go as far as possible after scoring twice without conceding.

Diakhatรฉ Ndeye opened the scoring for the Senegalese team with a penalty in the 39th minute after Tunisian referee Dorsaf Ganouati had no hesitation in pointing to the spot after a foul on Senegalโ€™s 16-year-old striker Hapsatou Diallo.

Senegal doubled their lead through Nguenar Ndiaye five minutes after the break, who finished clinically after being put through by the young rising star of Senegalese football, Hapsatou Diallo.

Burkina Faso will be Senegal’s next opponent on Tuesday 5 July at 18h00 at the Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex.

In the day’s other matches, Zambia played to a goalless draw against Cameroon Lionesses at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca.

As a result, Cameroon stood second behind Tunisia, who defeated tournament debutants Togo 4-1 in their TotalEnergies Womenโ€™s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2022 opener on Sunday.

The North African open their scoring inside the opening 15 seconds through rising star Meriem Houij, who was elected Woman of the Match.

And in the 22nd minute, Togo was awarded a penalty, with captain Odette Gnintegma taking on the responsibilities and tucking away her penalty neatly to become Togo’s first scorer in the history of this competition.

Tunisia scored three more goals to wrap up their opener with a super win.

CAF confirm new date for 2023 Africa Cup of Nations

The Confederation of African football, CAF, have revealed new dates for the 34th edition of the competition.

Initially scheduled for Ivory Coast next year in June/July, but as a result of the expected bad weather conditions, Caf has decided to move the continental showpiece to January 2024.

CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe stated on Sunday that the 34th edition, which was initially scheduled for June 23 to July 23, 2023, will not be played as planned due to the weather conditions in the West African country.

โ€œThe 2023 Afcon will now be played between January and February 2024,โ€ Mostepe told the media during a press conference in Morocco.

โ€œThis is one of the issues we discussed during our congress meeting here in Morocco as the official dates will be communicated later.

Morocco kickstart WAFCON with win over Burkina Faso

Hosts Morocco kickstarts the 2022 Womenโ€™s Africa Cup of Nations campaign off to a bright start after their hard-fought 1-0 win over a gallant Burkina Faso at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex.

The Atlas ladies narrowly won their Group A opener as captain Ghizlane Chebbakโ€™s scored in the 29th minute.

The strike lacked power but was good enough to deceive Burkinabe goalkeeper Mariam Ouattara, 19, who could have done better.

The host nation’s next outing in the TotalEnergies Womenโ€™s Africa Cup of Nations will be against Uganda in Rabat on Tuesday.

WAFCON matchday two in Group A will take place on Sunday when the Ugandan Cranes open their account against Senegal. Zambian and Cameroon battle it out in their Group B opener at the Stade Mohamed.

It was the first match at a WAFCON final in four years after the 2020 editionย was cancelledย because of the coronavirus pandemic, which the Confederation of African Football (Caf) had said it wasย reluctant to do.

Bo Rangers, FC Kallon ready for CAF Interclubs Competitions

Southern Province-based outfit Bo Rangers and FC Kallon are the two teams representing Sierra Leone in the 2022/23 CAF continental competitions, Football Sierra Leone understands.

The 2021/2022 fifth-placed side FC Kallon will join Bo Rangers, who won the Sierra Leone top flight for the first time in 68 years.

One of the most decorated clubs in Sierra Leone, the season second-placed side East End Lions, are yet to make a statement.

However, CAF announced a few days ago that preparations for the 2022/23 season of the CAF Interclubs Competitions have officially begun.

The Sierra Leone Football Association, SLFA, following a request from FC Kallon, have completed registration for Bo Rangers and FC Kallon, a source told this medium.

Preliminary home and away matches are to be played between 09 โ€“ 11 Sep and 16 โ€“ 18 Sep 2022.ย

The PK Boys are the second team outside the capital Freetown to win the Sierra Leone Premier League after Diamond Stars won it in 2012 and 2013.

It will be the first time teams from Sierra Leone to compete in Africa’s elite and second-tier competition since FC Johansen and RSLAF in 2017.

In 2017, FC Johansen was eliminated by FUS Rabat 4-1 on aggregate in the CAF Champions League as both sides played to a 1-1 draw in Freetown, but theย Moroccanย side won 3-0 at their Stade du FUS on 18 February 2017.

The same year in the CAF Confederation Cup, the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces FC reached the first round after knocking out Nigerian side Wikki Tourists 2-1 on aggregate in the preliminary, but they suffered a heavy thrashing to Tunisia’s Club Africain 9-0 first leg on 12th March 2017.

Fifteen years ago, FC Kallon eliminated Nigerian side Ocean Boys 1-0 on aggregate in the African Champions League preliminary after both sides played to a goalless draw in Nigeria.

The Cavaliers were eliminated by Ivorian Champions Asec Mimosa 3-1, who won both matches to progress.

In the 2012 CAF Confederation Cup, FC Kallon eliminated Cameroon’s Union Sportive de Douala in the preliminary but faced stiff competition against Nigerian Warri Wolves, who won 2-0 on aggregate in the first round.

CAF INTERCLUB COMPETITION RANKINGSย

Meanwhile, on Friday, CAF announced a list of the 12 highest ranked national associations according to the latest Interclubs Competitions.

The clubs are Algeria, Angola, DR Congo, Egypt, Guinea, Libya, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, and Tunisia.ย

Nigeria attacker Taiwo Awoniyi joins Nottingham Forest

Newly promoted Premier League side Nottingham Forest have confirmed the signing of Nigerian international forward Taiwo Awoniyi for a club-record fee.

Forest says the 24-year-old joins The Reds from Bundesliga club Union Berlin, signing a five-year deal at The City Ground.

โ€œIโ€™m very excited to be here at Nottingham Forest,โ€ said Awoniyi following his move to The City Ground, he told the clubโ€™s website.

โ€œItโ€™s always been my dream to play in the Premier League and having spoken to Steve Cooper about our ambitions and looking at Forest, with its great history, itโ€™s a club that I want to be part of.

Awoniyi scored 20 goals in 43 games across all competitions last season and becomes Forest’s first signing since gainingย promotion back to the Premier League.

“It’s always been my dream to play in the Premier League,” said Awoniyi.

The new Forest acquisition started his professional career at Liverpool, signing for the Merseyside club in 2015 before having loan spells at FSV Frankfurt, NEC, Mouscron, Gent and Mainz 05. He subsequently joined Union Berlin on loan during the 2020-21 season and made the move permanent last July.

Having represented Nigeria at U17s, U20s and U23s level, Awoniyi won the first of his three caps for the Nigeria national team against the Central African Republic in October 2021 and scored his first goal against Sudan in January at the Africa Cup of Nations.
