Former Norrköping striker Alhaji Kamara got his Richmond Kickers account up and running as they defeated Pittsburgh Riverhounds 2-1 at City Stadium on a waterlogged Saturday night.
It was the Kickers first win in their last four matches, midfielder Fred Owusu Sekyere and forward Alhaji Kamara handed the home side the early lead in the 15th and 47th minutes respectively.
Riverhounds midfielder Marshall Hollingsworth pulled a goal back in the second half. Despite the late offensive pressure, the Kickers were able to solidify a much-needed victory at City Stadium.
Kamara, a proven scorer, who is playing on loan from D.C. United, for the United Soccer League side, is seeking to re-establish his fitness following the discovery of a congenital heart defect while he was playing in Sweden in 2016 for Norrköping.
“It’s been a while for him,” Cowlishaw said of Kamara.
The Kickers manager Leigh Cowlishaw added: “He probably hasn’t played consecutive (90-minute) games in 2-3 years. We’ve got to get his fitness level higher.”
The Richmond Kickers travel to take on the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Saturday, April 29 before returning home to host FC Cincinnati and Bark & Brew Fest on Saturday, May 6.

Sierra Leone soccer legend Mohamed Kallon has confirmed he will join high-profile former African players to take part in the African Football Legends doubleheader billed to raise funds for charity.
Two-legged charity match is organised by African football Legends organisation (NPO) and the Beneficiaries are Nelson Mandela and Kanu heart Foundation.
The game will also be used to preach against Current Xenophobic attack happening in South Africa.
A team of African football legends will play against a team of South Africa legends to raise funds for the two charities and the Proceeds will be donated to Kanu Heart Foundation and Nelson Mandela Foundation.
The first leg is expected to be played at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos on April 29 in Nigeria and May 27 in South Africa.
Speaking ahead of the Legendary football matches he said: “I’m delighted to be part of this wonderful initiative.
“Obviously, I have done very well in representing Sierra Leone in Africa and at the highest stage of world football so I think this charity matches should be our obligation to pay back to less privileged and the needy all over Africa.
“Big brother Kanu is doing very well with his heart foundation and off course supporting Nelson Mandela foundation is a privilege for some of us who saw the great transformation of South Africa from the apartheid to freedom,” the former Leone Stars skipper told www.footballsierraleone.net.
Most notable former stars like Lucas Radebe, Peter Ndlovu, George Weah, Roger Milla, Taribo West, Samuel Eto’o, Cyril Mubiala, El Hadji Diouf, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, Daniel ‘the Bull’ Amokachi, Garba Lawal, Phil Masinga, Aime Kitenge, Lomana Lualua, Dr Jomo Sono, Neil Tovey, Patrick Mabedi, Peter Rufai, Samson Siasia, Joseph Yobo, Kwame Ayew, Doctor Khumalo, Eric Tinkler, Mutiu Adepoju, Pape Diouf, Phil Masinga, Kolo Toure, Dipsy Selolwane, among others have agreed to play in the doubleheader.
The Kanu Heart Foundation was founded in 2000 by former Inter Milan and Arsenal star, Nwankwo Kanu, to help save underprivileged African children who are battling heart diseases.

Mohamed Buya Turay’s goal rescued a point for AFC Eskilstuna following their 1-1 with IFK Gothenburg in their Allsvenskan encounter at the Gamla Ullevi on Monday.
The Sierra Leone-born registered his third goal of the new campaign.
The 22-year-old striker, who began his career in Sweden as third division player a few years ago, is now making the headlines in the Swedish top flight.
Turay last season AFC’s top scorer in Superettan with ten goals, was very impressive again today.
After a goalless first half, the deadlock wasn’t broken until the 52nd minute a goal from Gothenburg’s Tobias Hysén.
However, Buya Turay came to the AFC rescue in the 64th minute with his pace nicking the ball away from the Gothenburg’s defender to fired home the equaliser.
Gothenburg pressed forward in search of a late winner in the closing stages, but their visitors managed to stand firm.
“I’m happy for the team, we’re playing well,” he said. “Last week it was a disappointment not to have won all three points.
“Today’s point away from home, a good point. Gothenburg is a difficult place to come,” Turay told footballsierraleone.net.

27-year-old Hampton & Richmond Borough defender Michael Kamara has committed his international future to Sierra Leone.
Kamara, who is plying his trade in the English National League six-tier division, was born in Greece from parents hailing from Sierra Leone.
Kamara told footballsierraleone.net. “It will be an honour to represent the country of my parents. I’m confident, motivated ready to take my game to the next level.
“I’m buzzing with excitement. However, is up to the football authorities but I’ve always wanted to play international football. for the country of my parent’s.
The Defender also revealed he has already been encouraged by some Sierra Leone internationals.
“I have some good friends that are encouraging me as they have already represented Sierra Leone – the likes of Kei Kamara, Alie Sesay and Umaru Bangura, he said.
“Presently we are chasing promotion; I am a defender who can play right back or as a centre back. I’ve played 33 games this season scoring 11 goals.
“I was born in Greece Athens, my parents are from Sierra Leone, I started at Cambridge United at 16, and then got a move to Crystal Palace where I got called to the English U-23 squad.
“Unfortunately, I was unable to play due to injury – having left Crystal Palace I dropped into non-league where I played for Woking in the conference national but couldn’t avoid relegation.
“Since then I have played for Dover Athletic, where I was part of their Conference South Playoff winning side 2013–14 and Dulwich Hamlet. Last season I helped Hampton and Richmond gained promotion to the National League South,” Kamara explained.

BK Häcken striker Alhassan ‘Crespo’ Kamara inspired his team to a 2-1 win on Sunday over GIF Sundsvall and dedicated his goal to this month’s Swedish terror victims.
A suspected terrorist on the 7th of April in Stockholm deliberately driving at young children, crowds, killing four people and leaving 15 people, including two children, injured. The attack left some families devastated.
The Sierra Leone striker Kamara, who scored his first Allsvenskan 2017 goal for BK Häcken, celebrated by showing off his sweater displaying “14:53 Stockholm” the exact time of the terrorist attack as a tribute.
However, his celebration handed him a yellow card but it was worth it.
Kamara, who hadn’t scored in his previous two league matches for Häcken, was delighted with his first decisive goal of the new campaign.
“I am happy to score and help the team, at the same time – I wanted to send a message to the families that we never forget, the time was the exact time of the attack, Kamara told footballsierraleone.net
He added: “I’m not from Sweden, but Sweden is in my heart, and Sweden is a big part of me. I will never forget those who were injured and those who died in the terrorist attack in Stockholm.”
Following Alexander Farnerud’s opener in the 21st minute, Kamara tap in E. Binaku perfect cross from the right to double Häcken’s lead in the 26th minute.
Iceland international Kristinn Freyr Sigurðsson pulls one back for the host in the 58th minutes.
The win moved Häcken to 3rd on the Allsvenskan standing and they are unbeaten in their last three opening matches.
