Bo Rangers extend lead at the top as Lions down FC Kallon

Bo Rangers extended their lead to nine points at the top of the Sierra Leone Premier League after they defeated Diamond Stars 1-0 on Sunday.

The season second top scorer Abu Komeh scored the Elephants’ only goal in the 30th minute to sink Diamond Stars to sixth.

Bo Rangers, in the hunt for a back-to-back league title, for the first time in its history, won their third match in a row, having beaten FC Johansen and Wilberforce Strikers in the last eight days.

Might Blackpool, who played to a barren draw to Wilberforce Strikers, are nine points adrift at the top of the table.

Diamond Stars are winless in their last five matches (L3, D2), conceding twelve goals and scoring nineteen this season. Bo Rangers will extend their lead to twelve points if they beat Mighty Blackpool on Saturday in Bo, while Diamond Stars go away to Lamboi FC on the same day.

In another mouth-watering encounter, East End Lions beat FC Kallon 1-0 at Trade Center to leapfrog the Cavaliers to third with thirty-six points. FC Johansen also secured a vital win against Lamboi FC to move up to tenth on the table with twenty-four points.

In Kenema, Kamboi Eagles returned to winning ways after defeating Real Republicans 1-0 to boost survival hopes. Also in the East, Luawa FC registered back-to-back wins in Kailahun after beating bottom side Wusum Stars 1-0 to go ninth with twenty-five points.

Al Ahly edge Raja in Cairo quarter-final first leg

Egyptian giants Al Ahly kept their chase for a record-extending 11th title alive with a 2-0 victory over Raja Club Athletic in the first leg of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League quarter-final on Saturday night, CAF reports.

Mohamed Abdelmonem and Hamdi Fathi were on target in either half in Cairo to give their side an early advantage heading into next weekend’s return fixture in Casablanca.

Abdelmonem broke the deadlock at the stroke of halftime, towering above his marker to thump home a header from an Ali Maaloul cross from the left.

The home side was rewarded for their industry in the opening half, having commanded 60pc of the possession.

But Raja had two close chances to score, which would have changed the face of the game. Mohamed Nahiri had a stinging free-kick from distance brilliantly saved by Mohamed Elshenawy early on.

The Ahly keeper was called into action again when Walid Sabbar released Mohamed Zrida through on goal, but the custodian made another brilliant save to keep his side in the game.

On the other end, Ahly had a goal disallowed when Kahraba deflected a cross into the net, but it was ruled out for offside.

In the second half, Ahly looked to consolidate their lead and they did so six minutes from time when Fathi was picked out by a brilliant lofted ball from Percy Tau and he made no mistake with a brilliant volley.

Striker Williams speaks after bright start to new campaign

Striker Augustine Williams has recorded five goals in the last seven games following his brace against Tampa Bay Rowdies in Charleston Battery‘s 2-1 win, a run of form he is pleased about.

As a result, he has helped his side to gain 14 points leading the USL table after their six opening matches.

The Sierra Leone International has started where he left off last season after he led Charleston’s attack bagging a career-high 16 goals across 32 matches. Williams also registered three assists, 21 chances created, and 116 duels won during the campaign.

Williams, 25, brace on Thursday was his fifth in Charleston Battery’s last five USL Championships matches thus far.

“It’s great to start feeling good once again and being in this form that I’m in currently,” Williams told FSL News. “My job is to help the team in any way I can. And so far, I’ve done that in the best way I can.

“Scoring against Tampa Bay Rowdies, one of the best teams in the USL Championship, is always great. I always get motivated to play against them because when you play against one of the best, you want to put in your best performance and show you can compete, as well.”
