CAF Champion League: FC Johansen starting line-up

Hosts Johansen threw away an opportunity to record their first CAF Champion League home victory against Moroccan top flight side FUS Rabat, as they drew 1-1 in the first leg tie played at the Siaka Steven Stadium on Saturday.

The 2017 CAF Champions League debutants (FC Johansen) failed to hold on to an important lead in front of their home fans.

The kick-off witnessed no clear cut chances from either side in the early exchanges.

And after a dreadful first 45 minutes, Johansen took the lead immediately after the start of the second half.

The visitors were slightly dominant in the first half before Abdul Bangura headed home to give the home side the much-needed opener in the 50th minutes.

After the opener, the hosts was more pragmatic and never threaten to add to their tally against the Moroccans.

The Rabat-based club tried to rally for the equalizer few minutes after Johansen’s goal, but their efforts were derailed following some superb performances from the host defense.

However, FUS Rabat defender Mohamed Nahiri levels the scoreline at the Siaka Steven Stadium in the 75th min to give his side a massive away goal going into the return fixture at home.

At some points during the match, John Keister’s men showed glimpses of the threat they still possess with George Mata and Nyakeh Alpha causing some troubles to Rabat’s back four.

Many Johansen fans will be disappointed not to take a victory advantage into next week’s return leg.

The return fixture will be played at the Stade de FUS; in Rabat with the winner over two legs will play either side – the Ghanaian champions Wa All Stars or the Libyan outfit Al Ahly Tripoli in March.

Here is how they line-up:

Cameroon’s Aboubakar wins final with late goal against Egypt

Stade de l’Amitié, Africa Cup of Nations final – Egypt 1 (Elneny 22) Cameroon 2 (N’Koulou 59, Aboubakar 88)

Cameroon ended a 15-year wait to win the Africa Cup of Nations for the fifth time, a fantastic late individual goal from Vincent Aboubakar sealing the victory as the Indomitable Lions came from a goal behind.

Egypt, looking to win their eighth Africa Cup of Nations, looked well set to repeat their favorite 1-0 scoreline after Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny rifled home to beat Fabrice Ondoa midway through the opening half.

But an inspired double substitution from coach Hugo Broos turned the final on its head, first Nicolas N’Koulou heading his side back into contention and, with extra time looking a certainty, Aboubakar controlled a long ball from Sebastien Siani before flicking the ball over Ali Gabr and firing home the winner.

It’s the first time Egypt have been defeated in the final since 1952 and Cameroon now become the second most successful side in the tournament’s history.

Sunderland striker Khazri gives Tunisia victory over Libya

Sunderland striker Khazri gives Tunisia victory over Libya

Sunderland’s striker Wahbi Khazri scored a penalty in the second half as Tunisia beat 10-man Libya 1-0 in a 2018 World qualifier in Algiers on Friday night.

The victory takes Tunisia to the top of Group A with two victories from two group games, ahead of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Guinea who meet on Saturday. Libya are bottom with two consecutive defeats.

Following a largely uneventful first-half, the game opened up in the second stanza as both sides looked to get the vital three points.

In the 50th minute, Libya’s Ali Salama gave away the foul in his own penalty area, and with it also his second booking of the game to see his team playing a man short.

The Ajaccio forward Khazri converted the spot-kick even though Libya keeper Muhammad Nashnoush had dived the right way.

Even though they were playing with 10 men, the Mediterranean Knights still pinned their opponents back but Tunisia eventually held on to record a vital win.

Only the top team from the five groups in Africa will qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Kei Kamara on target to help keep Revs playoff hopes alive

New England 3-1 Sporting KC – Gillette Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Revolution are hoping to make late-season playoff pushes. And the team appears to be going in the right direction.

Kei Kamara scored his sixth goal of the season and the New England Revolution beat his former club Sporting Kansas City 3-1 on Saturday evening in the US to keep their playoff hopes alive.

“This time of the season is not a time where you can let your home points slip away,” said Kamara, whose opener gave the Revolution an early advantage in the fourth minute and assisted on Juan Agudelo’s insurance strike in the late stages.

“You’ve got to maximise your points at home and we definitely did that tonight.” Kamara was quoted as saying.

The Sierra Leone-born accounted for his sixth New England Revolution’s goal in this campaign to help keep their playoff hopes alive.

He scored his fifth goal and the Revs’ fastest goal this season in Major League Soccer club history since returning from international duty against Montreal on Sept. 17.

Kamara has now recorded 85 career goals and ranks fourth among active MLS players in goals scored, trailing only LA’s Landon Donovan (145), San Jose’s Chris Wondolowski (120), and FC Dallas’s Carlos Ruiz (88).
