Recap: Holders Ahly edge Raja in CAF CL quarter-final first leg

Recap: Holders Ahly edge Raja in CAF CL quarter-final first leg

Two first-half goals from Amr El Solia and Hussein El Shahaat were enough as Ahly gained an early 2-1 advantage in their CAF Champions League quarter-final first leg match at the Al Salam Stadium in Cairo on Saturday night.

Raja’s Mohamed Zrida pulled one back at the end of the first 45minutes, but the holders held on to a vital home win.

In the second half, Raja looked determined to find the leveller but suffered a setback when Marouane Hadhoudi was sent off for a foul inside the box. However, El Solia missed the penalty.

Both sides will meet again in Morocco next week in the second deceived contest on April 23 with a spot in the semi-finals at stake.

Elsewhere, two-time winners Wydad Athletic Club beat home side CR Belouizdad 1-0 in the first leg of their TotalEnergies CAF Champions League quarter-final encounter on Saturday.

An early second-half goal from Guy Mbenza was enough as Wydad had the job done to give them an advantage heading into next weekend’s return tie in Casablanca.

Striker Amadou Bakayoko takes season’s tally to 12

Sierra Leone International Amadou Bakayoko scored his twelfth in the campaign as Bolton Wanderers registered their eighteen wins after a 2-1 triumph over Doncaster Rovers on Friday.

“Important win today. We want to finish strong this season. I am delighted with my goal contribution to get the win,” the striker told FSL News after the match.

The home side levelled the scoreline through Mipo Odubeko in the 77th minute after Amadou Bakayoko struck for the visitors in the 47th minute as ex-Doncaster player Kieran Sadlier put Bolton back in front within a minute.

The Trotters started the stronger after Bakayoko missed a header. However, Doncaster had the better of the first half when Josh Martin drew a pair of decent saves from Bolton keeper James Trafford while Matt Smith drilled narrowly wide.

Bolton took the lead on 47 minutes when Bakayoko stretched to reach Jon Dadi Bodvarsson’s centre and poke home.

Doncaster pushed for an equaliser, and they came close when Martin beat the wall with a free kick, only for Trafford to get a hand to it.

They found one on 77 minutes when West Ham loanee Odubeko fired in from 15 yards.

But the visitors restored their lead a minute later through Kieran Paul Sadlier as he met a deep cross and powered the ball into the roof of the net.

Egypt appoint new Pharaohs’ boss Ehab Galal

Egypt have appointed Ehab Galal as the new national coach of the Pharaohs, succeeding Carlos Queiroz, BBC Sports reports.

Galal, 54, has been in charge of big-spending Pyramids since September, guiding the Cairo-based outfit to the quarter-finals of the Caf Confederation Cup.

Queiroz only joined Egypt last September but parted ways with the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) after failing to qualify for the 2022 World Cup last month.

The North Africans missed out on a place in Qatar after being beaten by Senegal on penalties – having also lost the Africa Cup of Nations final in February to the same opposition on spot-kicks.

Galal, who leaves Pyramids third in the Egyptian league, has managed several club sides including Zamalek, El Masry, El Makkasa, Ismaily and Al Ahly Tripoli.

Record seven-time African champions Egypt await the 2023 Nations Cup qualifying group draw, which will take place on Tuesday, 19 April.
