USL: Augustine Williams takes tally to sixteen

USL: Augustine Williams takes tally to sixteen

Sierra Leone International Augustine Williams continued his hot streak as he bagged his sixteen of the USL Championship campaign in Charleston Battery’s 4-1 defeat to Indy Eleven on Sunday.

The home team opened the scoring through Augustine Williams, assisted by Fidel Barajas in the 18th minute, but they struggled to maintain their early lead.

It was Williams’ sixteen of the season as the leading scorer for Charleston Battery.

Alec John Cochran drew parity in the 40th minute before Stefano Pinho’s brace in the 48th and 64th minutes, respectively, to give the home side a comfortable lead.

Charlie Asensio’s own goal completed Indy’s big win on the night at IUPUI Carroll Stadium.

Battery’s Coach – Casey’s post-match overall assessment of the night

It was good to come out and get the lead, we created a lot of chances in the first half. Things looked pretty comfortable for the most part. But in the second half, we gave up those goals and made another mistake. It went downhill from there in terms of our defence. What looked like a winnable game at halftime, unfortunately, didn’t turn out to be.

It was good to see Fidel get on the stat sheet again with another assist and to see Augi get his goal, so those were two positives from tonight.

Osman Kakay records assist in QPR’s win over Reading

Sierra Leone defender Osman Kakay recorded an assist as Queens Park Rangers secured a 2-1 win over Reading on Friday.

The defender started on the bench before he was brought on in the 26-minute to replace Ethan Benjamin Laird.

Striker Lyndon Dykes scored a brace as the Royals missed the chance to go top of the Championship.

The home side responded well despite trailing through Andy Carroll’s 30th-minute penalty kick in the 30-minute.

A quick reply from the R’s three minutes later ensured they level at the break as Lyndon Dykes nodded in Osman Kakay’s low cross from a tight angle in the centre of the box to equalise for the home side.

After the restart, both sides started with a high-tempo back-and-forth affair, with chances for both sides.

Royals goalkeeper Joe Lumley was called into action twice in quick succession, with a pair of big saves to keep the hosts at bay.

In the 84-minute, QPR was awarded a penalty after Iroegbunam, who gave away the spot-kick in the first half, was brought down by Mamadou Loum just inside the box before Dykes converted from 12 yards.

As a result, the London club move p to third in the Championship log above Reading.

CAF reopens bidding process for 2025 Cup of Nations

CAF reopens bidding process for 2025 Cup of Nations

The Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) have reopened the bidding process for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

The decision was taken on Saturday, October 1, in Algeria on the back of the decision to strip Guinea of the hosting rights.

Meanwhile, CAF has extended its best wishes to all five teams that have qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

CAF wishes Senegal, Tunisia, Ghana, Morocco and Cameroon all of the best in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

Recap – In 2014, CAF awarded the 2019 tournament to Cameroon, the 2021 event to Ivory Coast and the 2023 edition to Guinea.

Then Egypt replaced Cameroon for 2019 with CAF shifting the calendar, awarding the 2021 edition to Cameroon, which was held this year, and the 2023 edition to Ivory Coast.

Guinea had then agreed to organise the 2025 edition. This is also a severe blow to Guinea.

Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, who came to power in a coup in September 2021, had expressed his firm intention to honour the commitment to hosting.

The event was always going to be a significant challenge for one of the world’s poorest countries, which is sorely lacking in infrastructure, sports facilities and transportation.
