Nine players perish in Sierra Leone road crash

  • Sierra Leone is mourning the death of nine footballers, a community coach, who were involved in a gruesome accident that took place on Sunday between Makoth and Makarie in the Bombali District.

A total of 30 individuals, 25 players, a coach, and officials were in a min-bus when their bus collided with a loaded truck coming from the opposite direction.

The North East Region Football Association (NEFRA), Public Relation Officer, Mohamed Papa Bangura, confirmed this distressing news.

He said among the nine footballers, defender Anward J Koroma, Daniel Kanu, a goalkeeper and head Coach Samuel Kanu are among the deceased.

They were returning to Makeni from Batkanu in Karane District after playing a successful community football gala.

About 20 seriously injured, some are reported to be in critical condition in Makeni Regional hospital.

The North East football body has suspended all football activities in Bombali until the players are buried.

  • The Black Satellites are on course for a fourth continental title after making the semi-final of the 2021 championship in Mauritania after a 4-2 penalty victory over Cameroon in the Total Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-finals.
 
 Ghana and Cameroon played to a 1-1 draw after extra-time before they booked their ticket to the semi-finals of the ongoing Africa U20 Cup of Nations in Mauritania on Thursday.
 
Frank Boateng scored after 90-minute to cancel out a Kevin-Prince Milla opener for Cameroon at Stade Olympique in Nouakchott.
 
Goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim deemed as the hero following his p[eanlty saved while another came rattling off the crossbar as Ghana entered the next phase of the competition.
 
Meanwhile, Debutants Uganda impressively overcomes Burkina Faso 5-3 on post-match penalties at the Stade Cheikha Boidiya in Nouakchott to reach the tournament semi-finals.
 
They will now face the winner between Morocco and Tunisia in Monday’s semi-final in Nouakchott.

CHAN: Tanzania beat Namibia to set up a cracker with Guinea

A second-half strike by Farid Mussa was enough as the Taifa Stars down Namibia 1-0 to set up a cracker with Guinea in their group D final match.

Tanzania defeated Namibia in their matchday two contest of the Total African Nations Championship (CHAN) at the Limbe Stadium in Cameroon on Saturday.

As a result, Guinea and Zambia both top of the group respectively with four points apiece while Tanzania keeps hopes alive of reaching the next stage of the competition if they beat Guinea.

Namibia pointless after two games will be leaving the competition because they cannot finish at least second in the group even if they win their final match against Zambia on Wednesday.

Elsewhere, group leaders Guinea and Zambia played to a 1-1 draw after a late Spencer Sautu goal cancel out Syli National midfielder Victor Kantabaduno opener.

EFA: Egyptian Premier League set to restart August 7

Egyptian Football Association (EFA) have confirmed August 7 as the new date for the commencement of the Egyptian Premier League.

According to the EFA, the season will begin its schedule in two phases beginning with all postponed matches before lockdown.

Cairo giants Al-Ahly El Ahly SC was leading the pecking order with 49 points after playing 17 matches before the covid-19 pandemic.

The EFA, however, made no mention of Zamalek – who have said they will not resume playing until a “cure for the virus” is found.

The EFA last month implemented safety guidelines and testing procedures for players mandating two tests with five days separating each test, since then 19 tests have returned positive with individuals in isolation.
