Newly built Olembe Stadium in Yaoundé to host Afcon opener

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed the date and venue for the opener of next year’s TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The tournament is scheduled to kick off from January 9th to 6 February 2022, and the opening match is listed to be played at the newly-built 60.000-seater capacity Olembe Sports Complex. Kickoff at 17h00 local time 16h00 GMT.

The same venue is also set to host its first game on September 2 between the indomitable lions of Cameroon and their counterparts from Malawi. The match will serve as a test match for the equipment deployed ahead of the AFCON 2021.

The five other cities are Douala, Yaoundé, Bafoussam, Garoua and Limbe to host a mtotal of 52 matches schfiudled across the country.

Sierra Leone, like the rest 23 nations, will know group opponents next Tuesday.

The West African Nation now ranked 24th in Africa 106 globally after qualifying for their third continental showpiece since 1996 following a 1-0 win over Benin at the Stade Général Lansana Conté de Nongoin Guinea on 15th June 2021.

Rankings expect to boost Sierra Leone for Afcon draw

Sierra Leone have been ranked 106 in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking announced on Thursday. 

The West African Nation now ranked 24th in Africa 106 globally after qualifying for their third continental showpiece since 1996 following a 1-0 win over Benin at the Stade Général Lansana Conté de Nongoin Guinea on June 15.

As a result, they jumped eight places up, which could eventually see them seeded in Pot three ahead of the African Cup of Nations draw on August 17 in Cameroon.

However, the Leone Stars will be facing any two of the best-ranked sides from Pot 1 & 2 in their group in a bid to reach the tournament last sixteen. 

The 24-nations will be divided into a group of four, with six teams each from Pot one to four ahead of TotalEnergies 33rd edition of the continental showpiece expected to run from January 9 to February 6 2022.

The top two teams of each group, along with the best four third-placed teams, advanced to the round of 16.

Expected CAF seedings – In the bracket are present Fifa rankings for each qualified Nation.

Pot 1 Hosts Cameroon (54), Senegal (21), Tunisia (28), Nigeria (32), Algeria (30), Morocco (32). 

Pot 2 Egypt (46), Ghana (52), Ivory Coast (57), Mali (60), Burkina-Fas (62), Guinea (76).

Pot 3 Cape Verbe (65), Gabon (85), Sierra Leone (106), ( Guinea-Bissau (109), Malawi (118), Zimbabwe (108).

Pot 4 Sudan (121), Equatorial Guinea (132), Comoros (133), Ethiopia (137), The Gambia (148), Mauritania (170).

Sierra Leone to participate in DR Congo International football tourney

Sierra Leone to intensify preparations for next year’s Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

John Keister and his side will head to the Democratic Republic of the Congo later this month for friendly games.

The SLFA says the Leone Stars to participate in the 2nd DR Congo International Football Tournament in Kinshasa from August 22-25 and a friendly match against Ethiopia on August 28 this year.

The expected participating countries in the Congo DR tourney includes; hosts DR Congo, Nigeria and Congo Brazzaville.

On Tuesday, August 17 2021, all 24 nations will know their group opponents for the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, Cameroon 2021.

The local Organisation team in Cameroon will broadcast the draw live from 19h00 local time (18h00 GMT).

Sierra Leone hopeful signs for Greek side Panetolikos

Jonathan Sahr Morsay has signed a two deal with Greek top-tier Panetolikos.  

The Swedish-born, hailing from a Sierra Leonean parent, set for a new adventure in Greece.

Last season, he played with Romanian Liga I side  Dinamo București, on loan from Chievo Verona. He featured in 16 games for Bucureşti scored two goals last season. 

“Jonathan Morsay signed a two-year contract with Panetolikos today. He was born on 5.10.1997 in Sweden and played in Sundsvall and Brage. He transferred to Chievo Verona, and in the last six months, he played on loan at Dinamo Bucuresti,” the club said in a statement.

The winger is another potential for Sierra Leone. Morsay is set for his Panetolikos league debut on Saturday, August 21, against Asteras Tripolis when the Greek Super League.

Chalobah named in Chelsea squad for UEFA Super Cup showdown

Sierra Leone-born Trevoh Chalobah has been named in the 24-man squad that will face Villarreal in tomorrow’s Super Cup showdown in Belfast.

Chalobah, who made 29 appearances for Ligue 1 side Lorient last season, has been impressive during Chelsea pre-season.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Trevoh Chalobah, along with new signing Marcus Bettinelli, are the only players who were not at Chelsea last season.

The European Champions will take on their Europa League counterpart at the National Football Stadium at Windsor Park – Belfast.

The club says the travelling party arrived in the Northern Irish capital at lunchtime after a short flight across the Irish Sea.

Thomas Tuchel and two of his players will be on media duty this afternoon, and then the whole squad will train at Windsor Park.

Busy season ahead of Sierra Leone defender Osman Kakay

Sierra Leone defender Osman Kakay is relishing a busy season combining the English Championship, EFL Cup and next year’s 2021 African Cup of Nations.

Kakay, 23, English Championship side Queens Park Rangers will kick-off their new campaign against Millwall at Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium on Saturday before taking on Leyton Orient in the EFL cup on Wednesday.

QPR finished strongly last season, winning five of their last six games, and they look a decent side during preseason matches against Manchester United, Cambridge United and Leicester City. 

The right-back has been a key player under boss Mark Warburton after he featured in 29 games in all competition last season.

Speaking ahead of their season opener, Kakay is excited and ready to go. “Preseason has been good. I am feeling fit, strong, and ready for the upcoming season,” Kakay to FSL News UK.

“We had a good preseason, and I played in all three of our test games, including the 4-2 win against Manchester United. I am raring to go. I want to continue where I left off last season as an established player for my club and country.”

“I am full of confidence after the qualification to the Nations Cup. I want to be in the best form possible. So, I can’t wait to start.”
