Sierra Queens captain Kamara hits big stage with Armenia move

Sierra Queens skipper Rashida Kamara will continue her soccer adventure with the Armenian women’s championship club Noravank SC.

The Sierra Leone international defender told this medium that it means the world to her, trading her career for the first time outside Africa in a 2-year deal.

Kamara has been an instrumental figure in neighbouring Liberia, where she has been helping Liberia female division side World Girls FC during the 2020/21 league season.

A well-recognised player on the pitch, she provided 15 assists, seven goals in all competitions.

Her most notable season was in 2019 when she was awarded the Best Defender award in the Liberia league after she helped Earth Angels seal their double championship.

“I am delighted in joining Noravank in the Armenian women’s championship. A dream come true, and this means the world to me,” she told FSL news.

The club announced the news on their Facebook page. “Look who has arrived in Armenia. Sierra Leone senior Rashida Kamara of the national team of women is already in Armenia.

“We are pleased to announce that Rashida Kamara is joining the Noravank Girls team, and we are sure that she will have a direct impact on the team’s success and great victories. Welcome to Noravank big family, Rashida.”

We want to make Blackpool Tis Tas again – Rodney Michael

Well-known football administrator, Rodney Michael, has said revamping one of the oldest and most successful football clubs in Sierra Leone, Mighty Blackpool is the immediate objective. 

The Freetown based club announced Rodney Michael, who remains one of the most revered administrators in the country, as their new Chairman after a meeting with the committee of elders.

In recent years, the most decorated club in the country has been struggling, something Michael acknowledged and has vowed to help revive the club to its best.

“I am excited and extremely appreciative that Blackpool, with the potential of being the biggest club in Sierra Leone, and without doubt the richest history in Sierra Leone football, considers me the worthy choice to lead the transformation of the club through a very difficult period,” Michael explained while answering questions from FSL News.

The Ex-Sierra Leone Premier League chairman vehemently indicated that their short term goal is to secure a firm financial structure of the club.

“With the blessings of everyone at the club, my short term goal is to ensure financial and structural stability, conducive training and match operations, setting up of right administrative structures and uniting a very divided family. 

Medium to long term is to work on infrastructure to serve as permanent official secretariat, developing a training field with artificial turf and a solid revenue generation that is reliable through marketing and other methods. Blackpool has great potential, and we want to exploit it fully.”

1989, Mighty Blackpool reached the quarter-final stages of the African Cup of Champions Clubs. The first club from Sierra Leone to reach that stage. 

The club became famous in Africa after defeating reigning champions ES Sétif from Algeria further in the second round to eliminate Djoliba Athletic Club from Mali before losing to Tonnerre Yaounde from Cameroon in the quarter-finals.

Presently, Blackpool standing 13th in the ongoing Sierra Leone top tier league, and they will restart their campaign against Central Parade Sunday.

Ajax striker Sebastien Haller recorded a brace in the opening half to help Ivory Coast defeated Cameroon 2-1 at Lassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan on Monday night.

Nicolas Ngamaleu scored for Cameroon, and the win means Cote d’Ivoire go above Cameroon after their opening draw against Mozambique. Cameroon, who won their first game 2-1 by defeating Malawi now in second place.

At the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, Bongokuhle Hlongwane gave Bafana Bafana the lead with seven minutes remaining as they defeated Ghana 1-0 to move top of Group G with four points after they picked a point in the 0-0 draw against Zimbabwe on matchday one.

Group C

Kpah Sherman scored the only goal for Liberia in their 1-0 win over the Central Africa Republic in Monday’s Group C contest.

As a result, the Lone Star amassed three points compared to the Central African Republic one point. Cape Verde takes on Nigeria in Mnidelo on Tuesday.

Group E Uganda 0-0 Mali

In Kampala, Mali retained their hold on the top spot of Group E with a point against 10-man Uganda Cranes at the St. Mary’s Kitende Stadium in the outskirts of the capital.

Group J Benin 1-1 DR Congo

In Cotonou, Benin goes top of their group after they came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with DR Congo.

Dieumerci Mbokani gave the Leopards the lead after heading home from a Cedric Bakambu cross on the right after 12 minutes. The home side drew level after 32 minutes when Jordan Aeoti thumped a header into the net from a Delvyn Moremus cross from the left.

Bo Rangers appoint Chilean Jose Solomon Cortes as head coach

Sierra Leone Premier League leaders Bo Rangers have appointed Chilean Jose Solomon Cortes as their new head coach following local tactician John Dominic Konneh departure.

The 49-year-old has joined a list of foreign coaches who have been in charge of a Sierra Leonean club after the swiss Robert Muller, who was at Mighty Blackpool over 30-years ago.

Cortes, who will be working with former Kamboi Eagles coach Alhaji Foray, Kabineh Kamara and Guinean goalkeeping coach Allan Sekou Kamara, has said he is delighted and can’t wait to start.

His first task is at home against East End Tigers when the ongoing season kick starts on the 11th of August 2021.

“I am 49-year-old, and I have been coaching in Sweden and Guinea. I am delighted to be here in Bo and cannot wait to start,” the Rangers new boss told FSL News.

He confirmed having previous working relationships with Premier League clubs Aston Villa and Chelsea as a scouting agent.

The experienced technician has coached Vasalunds IF in Sweden and neighbouring Guinea over the last four years.

Rangers executive has been persistently on development with the recent construction of the clubhouse.

Guinea, Morocco World Cup qualifier postponed over unrest in Conakry

The World Cup qualification match between Guinea and Morocco has been postponed, following unrest at the capital of Conakry Guinea on Sunday.

The Moroccan delegation was escorted home last night after CAF and FIFA joint statement. Military officers claimed on national television that they had dissolved the government and closed all land and air borders.

Morocco arrived on Friday completed their first training on Saturday. They were expected to train at the match venue Stade Général Lansana Conté de Nongo on Sunday ahead of Monday’s game, but will not go ahead as planned.

Guinea opened their Group I Qatar 2022 campaign against neighbours Guinea Bissau with a 1-1 draw in Nouakchott, paving the way for Morocco to top the group after defeating Sudan 2-0 in Rabat.

Morocco coach Vahid Halilhodzic told French newspaper L’Equipe that they could hear “gunshots nearby all day”.

“The current political and security situation in Guinea is quite volatile and is being closely monitored by FIFA and CAF,” a FIFA statement read.

“To ensure the safety and security of all players and to protect all match officials, FIFA and CAF have decided to postpone the match.

“Rescheduling information will be made available at a later date.”

Sierra Leone striker Augustine Williams continues his fine form as he registered his third goal since his loan move to San Diego Loyal in the USL Championship.

His eleven-minute opener against former side LA Galaxy II on Sunday afternoon at Torero Stadium pave the way to a 4-2 win for his new side.

After his brace in their last match against the Sacramento Republic, Williams struck his third goal for San Diego Loyal in the 11th minute.
