Austin Eguavoen appointed Nigeria interim boss ahead of AFCON

Augustine Eguavoen has returned to Nigeria’s bench on an interim basis, the national football federation confirmed in Abuja on Sunday.

The NFF announced the termination of Franco-German, Gernot Rohr’s contract and revealed the appointment of current Technical Director Eguavoen as the new “Technical Adviser” of the Super Eagles on an interim basis.

However, Eguavoen will start his task with preparations for next year’s Cup of Nations taking place in Cameroon from 9th January – 6th February 2022.

The former International, who was part of Nigeria’s golden generation in 1994, will be assisted by reinstated coach Salish Yusuf, former Enyimba coach, Paul Aigbogun, Joseph Yobo, Terry Eguaoje, and goalkeeper trainer Aloysius Agu.

Former Nigeria captains Augustine ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu and Garba Lawal; were all appointed to provide technical and ambassadorial support for the crew.

Sesay thrilled after being named in Team of the Week

Sierra Leone defender Alie Sesay revealed his delight after being named in the Indonesia BRI Liga 1 round 16 Team of the Week.

The former Leicester City player has been in fine form this season and was impressive in Persebaya 3-0 win over Persib at the Maguwuharjo Stadium on Wednesday.

In thirteen appearances for his Indonesian side, Sesay has helped the team unbeaten in twelve games, nine wins and three draws.

“It’s nice to be recognised for my good performance, and five clean sheets in a row is what every central defender wants,” Sesay to FSL Sports.

They are fourth on the log, seven points adrift from leaders Bhayangkara Surabaya and to compete for the championship title, a strong defence is a necessity.

Persebaya next outing is a home game against Bali United on Monday.

Samuel Eto’o elected new Cameroon FA president

Former Barcelona and Chelsea striker Samuel Eto’o was elected president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) on Saturday at the Mont Febe Hotel in Yaounde.

His reign will start just under a month before the country hosts the African Cup of Nations.

Eto’o, who starred for Barcelona, Inter Milan and Chelsea during his professional career, will take over an organisation long tainted by infighting, mismanagement and allegations of corruption.

Seidou Mbombo Njoya and Etoo were the only two of the seven candidates who contested the elections.

On the morning of the election, former Cameroon internationals Maboang Kesack and Jules Denis Onana both pulled out.

During his glittering career, Eto’o became the first and only African to win the Spanish Golden Boot after netting 26 times in 34 matches in 2006.
