AFCON: Egypt edge Morocco to set date with host Cameroon

Egypt has progressed to the African Cup of Nations semifinals after edging Morocco 2-1 to set a date with host Cameroon in search of a record 8th AFCON title.

Mohamed Salah scored and made an assist as Egypt defeated their North African counterparts Morocco 2-1 in the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo, Yaoundé on Sunday.

Sofiane Boufal scored the opener for Morrocco from the spot inside the opening seven minutes before Liverpool’s star man Mohamed Salah drew parity in the 53rd minute.

The Pharaoh of Egypt took the lead through Aston Villa’s attacker Mahmoud Ahmed Ibrahim Hassan during extra time.

Morocco’s failure to take few of their chances suffered in the 10th minute of extra time as Salah darting past Aguerd down the right flank and laying on a perfect cross for Trezeguet to dispatch a simple finish with Bounou stricken.

Egypt will now face hosts in Cameroon in the last four on Thursday.

Meanwhile, hosts Cameroon overcome debutant the Gambia 2-0 in a quarter-final match played at the Japoma Stadium in Douala, Cameroon, on Saturday.

Kanu makes debut in Northampton Town win over Salford City

New loan signing Idris Kanu made his Northampton Town League Two debut in a 1-0 win over Salford City on Saturday.

Paul Lewis scored the only goal for the promotion hopefuls side after they returned to winning ways with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Salford.

As a result, the host stayed fifth in the League Two standings on 45 points from 25 games played.

Debutant Kanu went close early in the second half before Smith had Salford’s best chance of the game from a free-kick, but again he was thwarted by Roberts.

Kanu replaced Chanka Zimba in the starting line-up, with Eppiah named on the bench.

Jon Brady was pleased with the performance of his team as he reflected on Saturday’s 1-0 home win over Salford City.

“It’s nice to get back to winning ways,” he said.

“I feel it’s three and a half good performances in a row and we played some really strong football in the first half.”

Equatorial Guinea to face Senegal in Afcon quarter-final

Equatorial Guinea will face a tricky African Cup of Nations quarterfinal test against Senegal to be played at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo, Yaoundé, on Sunday.

They needed penalties to beat Mali by 6-5 after a goalless draw in extra time to reach the quarterfinals as they set a date with Senegal.

It’s their third time in as many participations while Mali failed to imitate what they did in Cameroon 50 years ago when they reached the final in 1972.

Their opponent Senegal roared into the quarterfinals defeating Cape Verde Cape 2-0 at the Stade Omnisports de Bafoussam in a round of 16 matches on Tuesday.

Goals from Sadio Mane and Bamba Dieng’s sealed the victory for Aliou Cisse’s men as two Cape Verde players receive a red card.

Meanwhile, debutants Gambia will take on hosts in Cameroon in an unprecedented quarterfinal that promises a lot of excitement on Saturday at the Japoma Stadium, Douala, in Douala.

The Scorpions challenge the Indomitable Lions for the quarterfinal clash of the ongoing TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, Cameroon 2021.

Hosts and five-time champions Cameroon may seem like favourites, but they have to face an emerging force in continental football, The Gambia.

Sierra Leone’s Idris Kanu pens Northampton Town loan deal

Sierra Leone International Idris Kanu has signed for Northampton Town on loan from Peterborough United for the rest of the season.

The 22-year-old Kanu, who was part of the Sierra Leone Africa Cup of Nations squad in Cameroon, is looking for a fresh start.

The attacker played 17 times and scored twice in League 1 in 2020/21 as Peterborough won promotion to the Championship.

Kanu previously spent time with Aldershot and Boreham Wood earlier in his career. Town’s manager Jon Brady says he is pleased to have the forward player to Sixfields.

“Idris is a creative player who is direct, he can travel with the ball and he has pace,” Manager Jon Brady told the clubs website.

“He can be a threat at the top of the pitch or out wide and can play in more than one attacking position with the ability to create chances. Idris can be tricky to handle for defenders and he is an explosive player who can make things happen.

“Over the last 12 months, he has had the experience of both League 1 and the Championship and we think he will prove a good addition for us.”

Achraf Hakimi nets as Morocco beat Malawi to reach quarter-finals

Achraf Hakimi nets as Morocco beat Malawi to reach quarter-finals

Africa Cup of Nations last 16, Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo – Morocco 2 (En-Nesyri 45’, Hakimi 70’) Malawi 1 (Mhango 7’)

A sensational free-kick from Achraf Hakimi lifted Morocco to a 2-1 win over Malawi and into the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals.

Malawi’s Gabadinho Mhango gave his nation a shock lead in the first half with arguably the goal of the tournament from 35-yards out, but a thumping header from Youssef El Nesyri and Hakimi’s set-piece booked Morocco’s place in the last eight.

Vahid Halilhodzic’s side, considered one of the favourites to win the tournament, will play Ivory Coast or Egypt in the next round.

Morocco began the game firmly on the front foot and were piling numbers forward from the first whistle, but Mhango stunned the Atlas Lions with a goal of the year contender in the seventh minute.

The 29-year-old Orlando Pirates striker picked the ball up near the halfway line before he fired a vicious curling strike beyond the helpless Yassine Bounou in goal for his third goal of the tournament.

Mhango came close to scoring again in the 22nd minute as he broke behind the Morocco defence, but he dragged his low strike just wide.

After Watford midfielder Imran Louza hit the bar 10 minutes later, Malawi goalkeeper Charles Thomu was extremely busy. He made great diving saves to deny Hakimi and Sofiane Boufal from close range.

But on the stroke of half-time Morocco got a deserved equaliser through En Nesyri, powerfully heading in a fine Selim Amallah cross at the far post.

Morocco continued to push for a winner in the second half and they got it in stunning fashion in the 70th minute as Hakimi curled his sublime free-kick into the top corner.

Stampede outside Olembe Stadium as Cameroon through to quarterfinals

Hosts Cameroon progress at the African Cup of Nations was overshadowed by a stampede outside the stadium that reportedly killed at least six people during the host nation’s victory over Comoros on Monday.

Reporters says the crash happened as crowds struggled to get access to Olembe Stadium in the capital of Yaounde as Cameroon beat Comoros 2-1 to reach the quarterfinals.

Hosts Indomitable Lions will face The Gambia, who defeated Guinea to progress to the quarterfinals.

CAF statement reads: “CAF is currently investigating the situation and trying to get more details on what transpired. We are in constant communication with the Cameroon government and the Local Organizing Committee.
