Sierra Leone close stadium for $40m rehabilitation
The government of Sierra Leone has launched a $40 million rehabilitation project for the Freetown-based National Stadium.
The project, which is expected to be completed by 2024, is being carried out by a Chinese construction company and will transform every aspect of the stadium.
The stadium, which was completed in 1979, is the only venue in the country that can host international matches for all national teams.
According to Thomas Daddy Brima, the head of the Sierra Leone Football Association, the stadium’s renovation is a long-awaited development.
The stadium has been in a state of disrepair for some time and was banned by the Confederation of African Football in February 2021, following an international match between Sierra Leone and Nigeria. The renovation will allow Sierra Leone to play their home matches at the stadium once again.
While the renovation work is underway, local premier league matches will continue to be played at other venues across the country. However, Sierra Leone will have to play their 2023 Nations Cup home qualifiers on the road, most likely in Guinea Conakry, where they defeated Benin in June 2020 to reach the 2021 African Cup of Nations.
