Augustine Williams rescues point for Charleston Battery

Sierra Leone International Augustine Williams scored sixth of the USL Championship season to help Charleston Battery earn a point against the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Saturday.

Williams, 24, once again was on the scoresheet as they came from behind to share spoils 1-1 at Al Lang Stadium.

Tampa Bay scored through Leonardo Fernandes in the first half, but Charleston drew parity from Williams’ 63rd-minute close-range.

The Battery secured their first point against the Rowdies since 2020 in what was a continuation of strong performances for the Black and Yellow.

Williams was pleased with the result as he commended the squad for their development, as shown in their performance against Tampa Bay on the road.

“To come here against one of the best teams in the league and earn a point – it’s an amazing feeling because of how much we were grinding,” said Williams. “It’s a big step forward and it was excellent collective work.”

Augustus Kargbo bursting with pride after first Sierra Leone goal

Sierra Leone Italy-based attacker Augustus Kargbo was positively bursting with pride after the attacker helped revive their comeback against Guinea Bissau on Monday.

The Crotone player dribbled to create space off his marker to score his first international goal for Sierra Leone in the 77th minute at the General Lansana Conté stadium in Group A matchday two of the African Cup of Nations qualifier.

Musa Nohad Kamara drew parity for Sierra Leone in the 87th minute to rescue a vital point against 9-man Djurtus.

When answering questions from this medium afterwards, Kargbo said: “It was a proud moment for me,  my family. I’m happy to have scored my first Sierra Leone goal donning the Green, White and Blue jersey.”

“I was over the moon, especially in front of my family and the fans at the stadium. One of those feelings I can’t explain.” It was raw emotion, although not the result we wanted, it was a point that kept our hopes alive,” Kargbo told footballsierraleone.net.

The goal was no more than Kargbo deserved for his brilliant efforts as a substitute.

Against Nigeria, he was brought on for Mua Noad Kamara in the 2-1 defeat at the MKO Abiola Stadium on Thursday.

The Leone Stars of Sierra Leone’s next Afcon outing in the qualifiers is against Sao Tome in September this year.

Nigeria secured six points after their opening g two victories, Guinea Bissau on four points, Sierra Leone on one point and Sao Tome with no point after two matches in the race to Ivory Coast.
