Tyrese Fornah nets winner as Reading sink Middlesbrough

Tyrese Fornah scored his first professional goal to help Reading to back-to-back Championship wins with a well-earned victory over Middlesbrough to move up to third place. 

Fornah, 22, who joined Reading on a season-long loan from Nottingham Forest, 28th-minute strike was the difference as the midfielder belted a low drive beyond Boro goalkeeper Zach Steffen for his first goal in a Royals jersey.

The midfielder took to Instagram to express his delight. “What a feeling to score my first professional goal and 3pts ✅ at The Select Car Leasing Stadium. Fans were amazing too.”

The win means Reading moved up to third as they maintained their unbeaten home record in the league this season with a third win from three.

Liberia edge Sierra Leone to set a date with Senegal 

Sierra Leone suffered a back-back defeat in the U15 competition at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium in their final match on Saturday.

Host nation Liberia came from behind to win 2-1 in their first match of the 2022 West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone-A U15 Nations Cup championship following Mauritania’s withdrawal.

The result means Sierra Leone has been eliminated from the tournament after a second defeat conceded five goals scored twice.

Sierra Leone had opened the scoring through starlet Osman Mansaray in the opening three-minute of play before Liberia responded after the visiting keeper Abu Bakar Kamara’s mistake.

Ezekiel Varney levelled the scoreline for the host nations making the score one apiece as both teams went to the break unseparated.

After the restart, Liberia looking more desperate for a win – took the lead for the first time in the match with a delicious goal from Emmanuel Flomo less than two minutes in the latter period.

On Friday, the U15 side from Sierra Leone suffered a 3-1 defeat to reigning champions Senegal at the ATS stadium in Monrovia.

Following the second 2-1 defeat, Liberia and Senegal will battle for this year’s U15 Nations Cup crown at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium in Monrovia at 9:00 Am on Sunday, 21 August 2022.

The winners from this encounter will be crowned champions, but a draw of any score will see the young Lions of Teranga retaining their crown.

Meanwhile, the young lads from Sierra Leone started the tournament on a positive footing thrashing Mauritania 6-0, but the result was nullified after the Mauritanian’s withdrawal due to alleged age cheating.

U23: Sierra Leone to square off with Zambia

 Sierra Leone will battle Zambia in the second round of the U23 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers following the draw on Thursday.

Exempted from the first round, Sierra Leone will engage Zambia on the weekend of 21 – 23 October 2022 before the away trip on 29 October 2022 in Lusaka.

The aggregate winner will advance to the final round that will be played during the week of March 20-28, 2023.

The winner will face Egypt, Eswatini or Botswana for a place at the next U23 AFCON in Morocco.

The Afcon U-23 will be staged in Morocco in June 2023.

In 2015, Sierra Leone eliminated Cameroon from the 2016 Olympic Games football qualifiers. Ex-skipper Sorie Barrie scored in the 93rd minute to draw parity after Joseph Minala had put Cameroon ahead. It was a goalless first leg in Cameroon.

Zambia, on the other hand, featured at the 2019 edition in Egypt but fell out in the first round.

As in previous editions, the tournament served as qualifiers for the Olympic football tournament.

The three top teams of the tournament qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympic men’s football tournament in Paris.

The draw for the 2022 WAFU Zone A U-15 Tournament was held today ahead of the competition opener on Thursday as host Liberia set to open the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone against Senegal.

The Sierra Leone U15 side, presently in the Liberia capital, Monrovia, will square off against Mauritania on Thursday 18th of August 2022 at 10 am at the SKD sports complex in Paynesville in Liberia. 

Sierra Leone’s 34-man delegation, including thirteen (13) officials and twenty-one (21) players) residing at the Executive Inn hotel, Monrovia. The Sierra Leone Vice President 2, Alie Badara Tarawallie, is the leader of the delegation.

Organisers have confirmed four nations will participate in this year’s Zonal A round-robin format. Senegal emerged as champions of Group 1 and Guinea as champions of Group 2 in the last edition held in Guinea.

Augustine Williams, 25, is certainly the man of the moment at Charleston Battery.

New York RB II suffered a 3-1 defeat to the Charleston Battery on Friday, August 12, at MSU Soccer Park.

The Sierra Leone International scored his 50th USL Championship goal in the 32nd minute, helping his Battery’s side to an excellent away victory.

Charleston struck first in the 32nd minute as Augustine Williams converted a penalty kick. They doubled their advantage five minutes after, as Aidan Apodaca collected a loose ball following a long pass from Robbie Crawford and sent a shot into the back of the net.

“I’m thankful to be able to reach this milestone, but I wasn’t able to do it by myself. I want to thank all my amazing teammates and coaches who have helped me to be where I am today,” a delighted Williams told FootballSieraLeone.Net.

Williams, who registered his 13th Charleston Battery goal of the season, reaffirmed that this is just the beginning.

“It’s just the beginning – a renewed confidence has fueled me to want to keep going. I am going to continue to keep my head forward and make sure I keep going higher and higher. Making sure that I accomplish more of the things that I need to be accomplished and scoring more goals to reach more of my goals.”

Battery Head Coach Conor Casey expected his side to build upon the momentum of the result when they head west to face LA Galaxy II on August 20 before returning home on August 27 against Detroit City FC.

Liberia’s SKD to host Sierra Leone, Mali CHAN qualifier

The newly renovated Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville, Liberia set to host Sierra Leone 2022 African Nations Championship qualifier against Mali.

The Liberia Football Association, LFA, have accepted a request from Sierra Leone Football Association to use the newly renovated Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville for upcoming international matches.

Head Coach Francis Zappa Koroma’s side progressed 3-2 on aggregate to face Mali in the final qualifying round on 27 July 2022 despite a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde in the African Nations Championship second leg qualifier at the Grand Stade de Marrakech in Morocco.

Sierra Leone’s next task is Mali in a second-round first-leg African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier at the SKD from 26-28 August, with the second leg coming up between September 2 to 4 in Mali. 

Home-based Leone Stars defeated Cape Verde 2-0 in the first leg on 24 July and lost the second leg 2-1 on 27 July at the Stade de Marrakech in Morocco.

The 2023 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship will be hosted by Algeria, who qualified as the host nation.

Morocco and Libya, under the North zone (UNAF), are automatic qualifiers for the 2023 event.

Meanwhile, Sierra Leone’s Interclub representatives and FC kallon will also host their matches at the SKD.

Bo Rogers and Algeria’s CR Belouizdad will meet in the CAF Champions League, whilst FC Kallon will take on Benin’s Buffles du Borgou in the Confederation Cup at the SKD from 9-11 September.
