U23: Columbus attacker Kamara starts for Sierra Leone

  • Five Foreign-based players named in Sierra Leone starining eleven 
  • First leg of the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations Qualifiers
  • Kickoff at the SKD Stadium in Monrovia, Liberia is set for 4PM.

Jay Tee Kamara, the winger, who can also play as a second striker, has been named in Sierra Leone U23 AFCON qualifying for the first leg starting squad to face Zambia’s young Chipolopolo at the SDK stadium in Liberia.

Coach Amidu Karim named a strong side that includes Troyes U19 striker Moses Turay, Italy-based defender Demba Kamara, Mbabane Swallows’ new acquisition, defensive midfielder Mohamed Kabia,  Hapoel Rishon leZion winger Emmanuel Samadia Emmanuel Samadia and Columbus Creww 2 attacker Jay Tee Kamara.

Sierra Leone welcomes their counterparts, young Chipolopolo, at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in the race to U23 Morocco African Cup of Nations next year.

Over two legs, the aggregate winner will face either Egypt or Eswatini in the final qualifying round.

The U23 AFCON tournament will serve as a ticket for the U23 Paris 2024 Olympics.

Mbabane Swallows star Kabia pleased with S/Leone call-up

Mbabane Swallows’ new acquisition, defensive midfielder Mohamed Kabia has expressed his delight after being named in the Sierra Leone AFCON U23 qualifying squad to face Zambia.

The former Denver Sundowns midfielder could make his Sierra Leone debut against Zambia in AFCON U23 qualifiers this month.

Junior Leone Stars are set to host Zambia at the SKD on Saturday before the return fixture in Lusaka next Saturday, 29th October.

He said the call-up was a dream come true for him as he was praying to represent his country of birth on a national level.

“I’m over the moon about being called up by the national team, as it is every player’s dream to represent his native country,” he said.

“I will give my best in the game to catch the eyes of the senior national team coaches. This call-up has come at the right time,” Kabia told pressmen in Eswatini.

Zambia plays Sierra Leone over two legs, with the winner to face either Egypt or Eswatini in the final qualifying round.

Zambia, Mozambique qualify for U-20 AFCON Egypt 2023

Zambia was crowned as the new Cosafa Under-20 champions after defeating Mozambique’s previous title holders 1-0 in Manzini on Sunday.

As a nation, they claimed their twelfth regional trophy with a 1-0 victory over defending champions Mozambique in the final of the TotalEnergies U20 AFCON Egypt 2023 COSAFA qualifier in Eswatini on Sunday.

Five foreign-based to boost U-23 squad for Zambia

Hapoel Rishon leZion winger Emmanuel Samadia, Mbabane Swallows’ midfielder Mohamed Kabia, Troyes U19 striker Moses Turay and Italy-based right-back Demba Kamara are expected to join the Sierra Leone U23 squad ahead of the first leg qualifier against Zambia this weekend.

John Thomas “Jay Tee” Kamara, who joined Columbus Crew MLS NEXT Pro side in February after one year with Louisville City FC of the USL Championship, is expected to be in Liberia on Wednesday.

Samadia is no stranger to the national setup. The winger was recently part of the AFCON qualifying squad against Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau.

Kamara, who made his Sierra Leone debut during the Mediterranean training camp in Turkey in March in a 1-0 win over Liberia, was part of the U20 Wafu Zone A side in Mauritania in August.

Troyes striker Moses Turay made his Sierra Leone debut in the 3-0 defeat to DRC Leopards in September’s International friendly in Morocco. 

Sierra Leone will kick start their Total Energies U23 AFCON 2023 qualifier against Zambia Saturday, 22 October, at the SKD stadium in Liberia before the reverse fixture on 29th in Lusaka.

The five foreign-based are expected in Liberia latest Wednesday ahead of the first leg cracker against young Chipolopolo.

In 2015, Sierra Leone eliminated Cameroon from the 2016 Olympic Games football qualifiers. Ex-skipper Sorie Barrie scored in the 93rd minute to draw parity after Joseph Minala had put Cameroon ahead. It was a goalless first leg in Cameroon.

Over two legs, the aggregate winner will face either Egypt or Eswatini in the final qualifying round.

FC Kallon crash out after defeat to Future in Egypt

Sierra Leone’s FC Kallon have been dumped out of the CAF Confederation Cup by debutants Future FC after a heavy 4-0 defeat.

Future FC went through to the next stage of the CAF Confederation Cup after a comfortable 4-0 second-round preliminary second-leg win over FC Kallon at the Air defence Stadium in Egypt on Sunday. (6-0 Agg).

A brace from Ayman Al-Sfaxi in 12 and 60 minutes gave the away side a tricky task to face.

Future added to their lead in the 68-minute through Saad Samir before Nasser Maher completed their 4-0 win in at the Air defence stadium on Sunday.

Following their first leg 2-0 triumph in the first leg at the SDK last Sunday in Liberia, it was always going to be a difficult result to overturn for the Sierra Leonean side.

After signing a host of players in the summer as they seek to improve on their fifth-place finish in the Egyptian Premier League and to mount a serious challenge for the Confederation Cup title.

This time, they failed to replicate what they did Fifteen years ago when they eliminated Nigerian side Ocean Boys 1-0 on aggregate in the African Champions League preliminary after both sides played to a goalless draw in Nigeria.

In the next round, they were eliminated by Ivorian Champions Asec Mimosa 3-1, who won both matches to progress.

In the 2012 CAF Confederation Cup, FC Kallon eliminated Cameroon’s Union Sportive de Douala in the preliminary but faced stiff competition against Nigerian Warri Wolves. They won 2-0 on aggregate in the first round.
