MKO Stadium to host Nigeria, Guinea Bissau AFCON qualifier
MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja set to host Nigeria’s Matchday 3 African Cup of Nations qualifier against the Wild Dogs of Guinea Bissau on March 24, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has said, according to a report from Nigeria.
However, Guinea Bissau’s football federation, Federação de Futebol da Guiné-Bissau, has not picked a date for the second match, which could hold either in Guinea-Bissua or Morocco on March 27 or 28.
“CAF inspected the national stadium 24 September, expected to host the African Cup of Nations qualifier match between Guinea-Bissau and Nigeria next March in Bissau,” Bissua Federation has said.
The Guinean government, the Football Federation and society at large await the final report of the inspector’s work, hoping that it will authorize the taking of “CAF and FIFA” games.
Guinea-Bissau have been playing their AFCON qualifying matches away from home due to a lack of an International stadium. They are among the African nations without an approved stadium.
Group A match day one of the qualifying series, the Super Eagles fought back from a ferocious start to the game after an 11th-minute goal by Jonathan Morsay (In Photo) – to defeat the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone 2-1 in Abuja after Alex Iwobi and Victor Osimhen hit back hard at the visitors.
Meanwhile, Sierra Leone’s 2-2 draw against Guinea-Bissau means they are third behind Bissau.
Guinea-Bissau on four points and occupies second place. Nigeria, who thrashed Sao Tome 10-0 in Morocco Stade d Agadir, top Group A with six points.
