Kevin Wright makes first start for Oakland Roots

Sierra Leone left-back Kevin Wright played the full throttle of the game as Oakland Roots defeated El Farolito 3-1 as they advanced to Round Three of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Johnny Rodriguez scored his second goal in as many games, and Wolfgang Prentice added a brace of goals himself Tuesday night at Pioneer Stadium on the CSU East Bay campus.

The home comfortably defeated El Farolito of the National Premier Soccer League by a final score of 3-1 to advance to Round Three of the U.S. Open Cup.

Oakland Roots opened the scoring at the 12-minute mark when Johnny Rodriguez headed the ball home on a set piece after drawing the initial foul.

Following goals in the 19th and 24th minutes by Oakland Roots winger Wolfgang Prentice, Oakland shifted their playing style to a more defensive-minded effort, allowing only one goal to El Farolito – a penalty kick in the 45th minute of the opening half.

Oakland Roots will return to USL Championship play this weekend as the squad travels to Indianapolis to face Indy Eleven on Saturday, April 8th. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 PM PT Pacific time.

Josh Koroma on target in Town’s triumph over Boro

Sierra Leone native Josh Koroma register his second goal in the English Champions in Huddersfield Town’s 4-2 win over Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Koroma, 24, was making his 12th appearance of the season and scored two goals in the Championship.

Fighting for a place in the second-tier of English football, Huddersfield produced a stunning second-half fightback to beat Middlesbrough and dent their automatic promotion hopes.

In the 43rd-minutes, Marcus Forss had put Boro ahead, but Josh Ruffels lashed a shot into the roof of the net to level just 20 seconds into the second half.

Josh Koroma curled a shot into the corner to put the host ahead before Matty Pearson added a quickfire double as below-par Boro collapsed.

Boro pulled one back through Chuba Akpom’s head to make it 4-2, but that wasn’t enough.

It left Boro six points adrift of second-placed Sheffield United, having played a game more, while the Terriers move level on points with Cardiff City in 21st place.

Bittersweet Norwich City debut for Abu Kamara

Bittersweet Norwich City debut for Abu Kamara

The youngster was pleased after he made his senior Norwich City debut in their 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United in the English Championship on Saturday.

Abu Kamara, 19, looked almost shocked when called back from his warm-up before replacing Teemu Pukki in the 70th minute of the Canaries’ 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United at Carrow Road on Saturday for his senior debut.

“I’ve been here since the age of ten, so I’ve been dreaming of this moment my whole life, really,” Kamara said in his post-match Interview.

“The day has come today, so I’m happy about that. I came into this game the same way that I come into every game – with a positive mindset and hoping that I get on. Luckily today, the boss put me on the pitch.

“I just want to show what I can do to the fans, get some goals and earn my spot in the team.”

Kamara’s introduction was designed to inject City’s toothless attack with some youthful energy, and his determination to make an impact throughout his cameo was visible.

But Kamara was unable to provide a spark in a City side that only recorded one shot on target in the game, which came through Marquinhos in the 92nd minute.

In April 2022, Kamara was on the bench for the first team’s Premier League game against Brighton & Hove Albion.
