Attacker Sankoh happy with goal in win over Go Ahead Eagles

Sierra Leone native Mohamed Sankoh was pleased with his winning goal in Vitesse‘s home victory over Go Ahead Eagles on Saturday.

Sanko’s winner helped Vitesse Arnhem move three points clear of the bottom three with a much-needed 2-0 victory against Go Ahead Eagles.

“Massive three points and amazing atmosphere. We keep fighting, ” Sankoh on-loan from VfB Stuttgart posted on Instagram.

Vitesse went into the game with only two home wins all season, but they took the lead in the 21st minute through a Maximilian Wittek free-kick.

In the 63rd minute, Vitesse doubled their lead through a Melle Meulensteen corner converted by Mohamed Sankoh, a tapped-in from close range.

Isac Lidberg hit the crossbar late for the visitors, but they could not prevent Vitesse from claiming the three points that moved them to 13th.

The Eagles are now three points above them. On Sunday, Vitesse away to NEC Nijmegen as they battle to avoid relegation.

Striker Williams continues fine form with another goal

Sierra Leone striker Augustine Williams has continued with his brilliant start to the season after he recorded his third of the season in Charleston Battery‘s 3-2 victory over Hartford Athletic in the USL championship on Sunday.

Williams, 25, has continued where he left off last season. He led Charleston’s offence with his most prolific scoring mark, bagging a career-high 16 goals across 32 matches. Williams also registered three assists, 21 chances created, and 116 duels won during the campaign.

Nick Markanich and Augi Williams provided earlier goals for the Battery, but Hartford kept pace until the end.

After the visitor’s equaliser through Conor McGlynn in the 60th minute, Battery was dealt a blow when they were reduced to 10 men following Dante Polvara’s sending-off in the 76th minute.

The visitors thought they had the lead a moment later, but Kye Edwards’ goal was chalked off for offside.

Both teams continued to work hard for the match-winning goal as the game wore on.

10-man Battery defeated Hartford Athletic 3-2 on Saturday at Patriots Point thanks to late-game heroics from Arturo Rodriguez’s stoppage-time goal.

The victory means Charleston Battery’s extended their early unbeaten run to five games in 2023 across all competitions.

Kei Kamara’s brace helps Fire beat Minnesota United

Major League Soccer veteran Kei Kamara scored a brace to helped sealed Chicago Fire’s first home win of the 2023 season Saturday night.

His 24th and 36th-minute goals secured Fire a 2-1 victory over previously-undefeated Minnesota United FC at Soldier Field.

The 38-old-old first-half brace increased Kamara’s career tally of MLS regular-season goals to 142, remaining third on the league’s all-time scoring list and moving just three behind Landon Donovan (145), according to MLS records.

The league and US men’s national team legend holds second place after last playing for the LA Galaxy in 2016. Even though the 38-year-old Kamara could soon surpass Donovan, he was all about the collective when reflecting postgame.

Playing in his 18th MLS season, Kamara recorded his third of the season in his fifth appearance after a trade from CF Montréal in February.

Sierra Leone drop to 117th in April Fifa ranking

Despite securing four points in the latest African Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sao Tome, Sierra Leone dropped in the latest Fifa ranking from 116th to 117th.

It comes after John Keister’s team dropped points at home in last month’s Afcon qualifiers’ first leg against lowly-rated Sao Tome.

However, in the return leg, Sierra Leone registered its first victory in the African Cup of Nations Qualifying Group A campaign defeating Sao Tome 2-0 to move two points behind leaders Guinea Bissau.

Both sides played to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday, but on matchday four, Sierra Leone looked more determined to keep their qualification campaign alive.

Defender Abubakarr Samura scored the opener in the 7th minute from a corner the Sao Tome defence failed to clear.

After controlling much of the first 20 minutes, RB Linense midfielder Alhassan Koroma scored a decent long-range to double Sierra Leone’s lead in the 28 minutes.

The Qualifiers will continue in June when Sierra Leone hosts Nigeria.
