Sierra Leone’s Osman Kakay excited after Thistle debut

  • Osman Kakay, who joined Scottish club Partick Thistle on loan from English Championship side, Queens Park Rangers earlier this month says he was elated after making his debut.
  • Kakay is the second International from Sierra Leone to play for the Jabs after Mustapha Dumbuya.
  • The former Chesterfield and Livingston player will play for the Jabs with number 24 jersey on loan until January 2020

“I was excited after my full debut on Friday because it was a great game we played as a team. For me in particular, it’s a great opportunity, playing first-team football,” Kakay told FSL online.

“Kenny Miller’s second-half equaliser earned us a 1-1 draw at Gayfield Park with me playing 90-minute of football after a long time out. I hope to continue in upcoming matches.”

The young defender made his international debut for Sierra Leone against Ethiopia during the 2019 AFCON qualifier.

This is his second spell in Scotland after the first loan at Livingston, where he played 12 games in the Scottish Championship for the Lions.

Partick are currently second from bottom of the Scottish Championship, having picked up two points from their opening five matches.

  • The 18-year-old Liberian keeper, Ashley Williams has been rewarded for his crucial penalty saved on Sunday against Sierra Leone in Freetown.
  • Jos Travel Agency acknowledged the youngster’s effort after helping Lone Star to the group stage of the 2022 African World Cup qualifier.

William’s 94th minute saved was pivotal in the contest, having defeated the Leone Stars 3-1 in the first-leg at home on September 4.

The Lone Stars trailed 1-0 in the reverse fixture in Freetown and risked elimination if Sierra Leone skipper Umaru Bangura could have scored their last-gasp spot-kick to win 2-0.

As a result, Peter Butler’s side progressed with a 3-2 aggregate win.

The winner of each group will then face-off in home-and-away ties for a place at the global showpiece in Qatar 2022.

The Zimbabwe Warriors are through to the group stages of the 2022 World Cup qualifying rounds with a 3-2 aggregate victory.

Zimbabwe on the day won 3-1 to overcome last Thursday’s 1-0 first-leg defeat to The Ocean Stars.

The victory is also a welcome relief to millions of the Warriors followers who had to endure the frustration of watching their team lose game after game since the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Egypt.

“We can now smile. It has been hard for us to watch our Warriors lose every game they took part in. I think, we are now on the right track,” said William Mahoko, a member of the Zimbabwe National Soccer Supporters’ Association.

The Warriors are now waiting for the group stages draw, to be conducted by Fifa, to know the nation they will face as they seek a maiden appearance at the global football festival.

Zimbabwe missed out of the 2018 World Cup after the country was thrown out by Fifa following the failure by the Zimbabwe Football Association to pay then Warriors coach Jose ‘Valinhos’ Claudinei Georgini his salary.

The Warriors also have 2021 Africa Cup of Nations engagements in which they are in the same group with Africa champions, Algeria, Botswana, and Zambia. Two teams from the group qualify for the finals to be held in Cameroon.
