Josh Koroma helps Huddersfield Elite beat Morecambe

Huddersfield’s Josh Koroma was instrumental with the Elite Development Team following a 3-2 victory over Morecambe as they launched their Central League campaign on Tuesday at the Globe Arena.

Morecambe got off to a better start and came close to gaining an early advantage.

However, it was Koroma, 20, creativity from the left of the pitch, laid on all the goals as Town came from 2-1 down to win 3-2 at Morecambe.

The Sierra Leone native teed up Reece Brown for his brace, and Matty Daly for the other as Dean Whitehead’s side picked up maximum points.

The former Leyton Orient academy product joined Championship side Huddersfield for an undisclosed fee on a three-year contract in June.

  • The 2019 WAFU Cup of Nations kicks off on 28 September at Stade Lat-Dior in Thies, Senegal, where all matches will be played.
  • Phase 1 will see the eight winning teams advance to the Cup competition, while the losing eight will contest the Plate section.

The Cup final takes place on October 13, while the Plate final will be played the day before.

Host Senegal will kick off their campaign against Guinea Bissau on 28 September. All matches will be taking place at the Stade Lat Dior in the beautiful city of Thies.

On the same day, defending champions Ghana taking on The Gambia.

Sierra Leone to face Liberia in WAFU Cup of Nations

  • Sierra Leone has been recalled and will now face Liberia in this year’s WAFU Cup of Nations that is expected to run from 28 September to 13 October 2019 in Senegal.
  • The Sierra Leone Football Association announced the news on Tuesday. 
  • The West African Football Union body, previously confirmed in May this year that Sierra Leone was not included due to its previous Fifa suspension.

The Lone Star home-based side was billed to play Morocco, but the North Africans reportedly pulled out.

The home-based Leone Stars were eliminated in the last edition by Nigeria following a 2-0 defeat in the preliminary round in September 2017 at the Cape Coast Stadium in Ghana.

The draw for the 2019 WAFU Cup of Nations was held at the Radisson Blu Sea Plaza Hotel in Dakar on Wednesday 29 May.

John Trye sets sight on Canadian Soccer League title

“We have been consistent over the last three season. Unfortunately, we have not been able to lift the title,” John Trye told FSL News.

The experienced keeper added, “To win a Championship, you must show some amount of consistency. Since I joined Scarborough, we have played two finals, but no title.”

“Hopefully, this time we can go a step better if we make our third consecutive finals.”

Trye, who has been instrumental help Scarborough SC secured the runner-up position with a 2-1 victory over Serbian White Eagles in the only match played in the Canadian Soccer League on Sunday night.

They have one game remaining in the regular season, a visit to Esther Shiner Stadium to complete its regular season against FC Vorkuta on Saturday, September 28.

Vorkuta and Scarborough are the two most successful teams as they have occupied the top two positions in the First Division for most of the regular season.

Vorkuta and Scarborough will enter the Canadian Soccer League Championship quarterfinals with home advantage during the weekend of October 11-13.

The quarterfinals will be followed by the semifinals during the weekend of October 18-20.

The CSL Championship Final will be played at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke on Saturday, October 26.

Trye, 34, was the goalie for Sierra Leone when they lost to DR Congo 3-1 in their final Group D, African Cup of Nations qualifying match at the Stade Tata Raphaël in November 2014.

Sierra Leone to host WAFU Women’s Championship in December

The competition will take place provincial cities of Makeni, Bo and Kenema, the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) has confirmed. 

News of WAFU competition comes few days after the final of the First Lady Cup in Kenema which was won by Mahmoud FC who defeated Sierra Leone Police side by 1-0 with a 66th-minute goal from Francisca Howe, the only goal in the game that separated the two sides.

“We are just coming from a competitive national female competition, new talents at diverse ages have emerged if scouted by the national senior female team will make up a very formidable squad of a young and passionate female team for the nation,” said an excited Mahmoud manager, Mahmoud Kargbo.

“I do not doubt all of the players from all the 40 clubs that participated in the just-concluded first lady trophy despite the individual challenges.”

The Sierra Leone international is fifth in the all-time MLS scoring list with 124 goals.

Kansas City was in front with a goal from Fernandes Gerso after only three minutes, and the hosts had doubled their lead 11 minutes later when Rapids’ Tommy Smith turned the ball into his net while pressured by Krisztian Nemeth.

Colorado Rapids level the score-line from a Diego Rubio goal in the 76th minute from 16 yards, assisted by Smith, before Smith sealed the victory for Colorado with an 85th-minute header from a Price assists.

The Rapids next MLS outing is against Dallas on Sunday, and Sporting Kansas City’s next match is Wednesday on the road at Minnesota United.
