A last-gasp Lesotho equaliser in an empty Siaka Steven Stadium on Wednesday denied Sierra Leone opening victory at home.
Both nations face each other for the first time in continental football history in a closed-doors contest.
Icelandic-based midfielder Kwame Quee break the deadlock for Sierra Leone in the 70th minute after a poor defending by Likuena.
Sierra Leone failed to hold on to their slender lead and paid for it late on when Jane Thabantso, who was subbed on for Fothoane salvaged a 1-1 draw for Lesotho.
Before Lesotho’s equaliser, skipper Marepe Basia was dismissed in the 83rd minutes for a second yellow card and Sierra Leone’s George Kweku Davies received a straight red for retaliation.
Elsewhere, The Super Eagles of Nigeria got off to a winning start following a 2-1 over Benin at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Wednesday evening.

Striker Kei Kamara has all but retired from playing for Sierra Leone on the eve of the African Cup of Nations opening against Lesotho he believes the time is right to focus solely on club football.
The goal against Liberia during the World Cup Preliminary in September is going to be his last.
The Colorado Rapids attacker in his statement, Kamara opened up further on the sad ending on his time as Sierra Leone international.
Kamara, 35, says several factors have influenced his decision, despite family and colleagues tried talking him out of his decision.
The veteran Major League Soccer striker has 29 caps and has been in almost every Sierra Leone squad since 2008.
Sierra Leone to open their campaign against Lesotho on November 13 at the Siaka Steven Stadium, before travel to face the Squirrels of Benin a few days later in Matchday one and two of the 2021 African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Kamara stated, “Hello Sierra Leone, I am Kei Kamara the message today is I am stepping down from Sierra Leone national team, and this is for good.”
“I have met with my national teammates apologised to them on my retirement. They tried talking me out of my decision, but It’s a decision that has already been made.”
“I love Sierra Leone, I love my family, that have tried talking me out of it, but I need to continue with my decision. Please, with all respect, “I am 35-years old, I never look at the national thinking I would play forever. It’s time for me to step back, and look at how football will grow in our country,” Kei explained.
According to AfriRadio Ace Sports Show, Kei further explained several reasons for his actions.
“I am not retiring from the National Team because of Musa Tombo. I love the kid, but I won’t sacrifice my career for him.” Over 12 years in the National Team I have never played in an international friendly for Leone Stars.”
Kamara also takes a swipe on the national technical team. “I do not have confidence in the Technical Team headed by Coach Sellas Tetteh. He can’t take us anywhere with all due respect to him.”
“There is no togetherness in the National team & the Players in the country. Players must not pay or give a token to be part of the National team.”
He went further to clarify the Vice-captain status, “I was never appointed as Vice-Captain of Leone Stars.”
“I have engaged the President of the Sierra Leone Football Association on issues bothering around the administrative running of the team, but things do not seem to change at all, and I think it’s time for me to step aside.”
In 2008, the former Vancouver Whitecap striker Kamara made his International debut for Sierra Leone came during 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on June 14, 2008, vs. South Africa.
He scored his first goals for his country with a brace during 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualification against Sao Tome and Principe on June 16, 2012.
Kamara appeared in 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification fixtures, scoring another goal for Sierra Leone on June 8, 2013, against Tunisia.
He was part of the side that helped the country to their highest FIFA World Ranking in history (50th in 2013).
The out-spoken striker is fifth all-time in the Major League Soccer goal-scorers column with 115th.

Almost 18 hours to Sierra Leone opening African Cup of Nations qualifier against Lesotho, striker Kei Kamara has been replaced in coach Sellas Tetteh’s 23-man squad.
This came in following rumours that the Colorado Rapids striker who was very influential in the National Team’s last international with Liberia had pulled out of the squad.
It’s not the first time he has been on the spotlight for the wrong reasons ahead of International Matches. Kamara was suspended before the Liberia World Cup preliminary qualifiers before his suspension was rescinded.
The Sierra Leone Football Association said in a statement, “Kei Ansu Kamara has been officially replaced with Sallieu Tarawallie of FC Kallon in the 23-man Leone Stars squad ahead of the Lesotho encounter tomorrow. Details on his omission to follow later.”
Sierra Leone will open their Cameroon 2021 campaign at home before travelling to face the Benin Squirrels four days later.
Kamara posted on his official Facebook page earlier today. “I promise I love you, but right now I will be watching from outside. Good luck, brothers.”
In another development, East End Lions defender, Yeami Dunia has been brought into the squad in place of Phoenix Rising right-back, Mustapha Dumbuya who will miss the tie due to flight schedule.
Meanwhile, Lesotho coach Thabo Senong has said they are fully focused to face Sierra Leone.
“We treat every match equally; we respect every opponent and prepare very well. Our objective is to improve in all the phases of the game. The results will take care of itself,” Senong told the LeFA website.
He continued: “We respect Sierra Leone. They have players playing in Europe in their team and will be playing at home, which will be an advantage to them. They will be very tough.”

Delighted Sullay Kaikai was pleased after converting one of his chances in Blackpool’s 4-1 Emirates FA Cup win over Morecombe on Saturday.
Goals from Delfouneso, Gnanduillet, Virtue-Thick, and Kaikai’s 84th minutes were enough breezed past Morecambe.
The former NAC Breda attacker has been impressive since joining the Seasiders over the summer. His 84th-minute goal completed their victory as Blackpool proved too strong to secure their passage into the second round of the FA Cup.
The Sierra Leone native told the club’s website that he was pleased after finally take his chance having several opportunities to find the back of the net.
“I was a bit disappointed with the couple of chances that I missed earlier in the game, but I was glad to get on the scoresheet,” he admitted.
“I felt it was a little congested and tight in the first half. However, I came out in the second half, and there was a bit more space for me to utilise across the pitch.”
“I think with the previous chances, the problem was I was rushing a little bit, so I took my time to compose myself with the goal and ultimately I got on the scoresheet again, which is great.”
The Seasiders have won their last three matches registering nine goals.

Sierra Leone’s Alhaji Kamara scored in the 68th minute to put Randers in front at Cepheus Park in their 3-3 draw against AaB Aalborg on Friday.
Randers FC and AaB opened the 16th round of the Danish 3F Super League with six goals showdown.
Host Randers started brightly, but it was the visitors who took the lead in the opening 2 minutes from a Mikkel Kaufmannunder strike.
Six-minute after, Vito Hammershøy-Mistrati level the scoreline for the home side for his first goal in the 3F Super League. The 27-year-old midfielder received the ball a few yards off the field and kicked it dry in the bottom right corner.
Randers went in front from a Mathias Nielsen 20th minute goals to end the first 45 minutes with a 2-1 scoreline.
After the restart, the visitors increased the pressure and worked towards an equalization. Their hard works paid off when AaB’s Magnus Christensen made it 2-2.
Randers FC responded quickly and well, but this time it was the Sierra Leone international, whose header put the home side in front again. 3-2.
However, a Mikkel Kaufmannunder brace in the 73rd minute denied the home team all three points.
Randers will take on Nordsjaelland after the international break on November 22nd away from home.
