Mali beat Sierra Leone to reach WAFU U20 Championship final

Mali U 20 side are in the final of this year’s West African Football Union (Wafu) Zone A Under-20 Championship after a slender 1-0 win over Sierra Leone at September 28 in Conakry, Guinea.

Sierra Leone’s Shooting Stars were not at their best following their impressive 3-2 victory over Mauritania en route to the semi-finals.

The Malians scored a brilliant long-range and only goal from Abdoulaye Traore in the 30th minute to secure their spot.

As a result, they await the winner between Senegal and The Gambia both nations lock horns late on in the other semi-final.

Breaking: Kargbo ‘delighted’ at son’s Dynamo Kyiv opportunity

Former Sierra Leone captain Ibrahim Obreh Kargbo is over the moon after his son a former Crystal Palace youth player penned a three-and-half year deal with Ukrainian top-flight side FK Dynamo Kyiv after leaving Belgian club KSV Roeselare.

Ibrahim Kargbo Jnr, 19, who recently featured for the Belgian Red Devils U18 in a friendly four-country tournament in Murcia (Spain), last played for Lierse Kempenzonen on loan from Roeselare.

The young attacker is still eligible to play for Sierra Leone despite representing Belgium at youth level.

Dad’s Kargbo said: “I’m delighted that he’s getting the opportunity to play at the top level at a young age. It is one those chances any father will celebrate, but maintained that his son has to focus if he is to excel and learn the trade,” He told FSL Media.

“My son Ibrahim Kargbo junior has been presented with a great opportunity to progress in his career. As a parent, I couldn’t be happier for him.”

In June 2016, the youngster father confirmed that Crystal Palace completed the signing of his son and was drafted immediately to Premier League side Under 17 and 18 squad.

At the age of eight, Kargbo Jr. moved with his family to Belgium, where he started studying at Beershot School.

Kargbo Jr. has also had a spell with Reading youth sides U-13 and U-16 where he continues to excel before his move to Palace.

Esperance ease past Raja Casablanca in Morocco

Esperance de Tunis proved too strong against Raja Casablanca in Morocco with a 2-0 win in their Group D 2019/20 CAF Champions League opener on Saturday.

Anice Badri and Ibrahim Ouattara scored in the opening 15 minutes for Esperance of Tunisia away to Raja Casablanca of Morocco and held firm to secure a 2-0 triumph.

Elsewhere, a brace for Jackson Muleka help TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo overpowered Egypt’s Zamalek 3-0 in Lubumbashi.

On Friday, there were home wins for Etoile Sahel of Tunisia, Al Hilal of Sudan and JS Kabylie of Algeria over Al Ahly of Egypt, Platinum of Zimbabwe and V Club of DR Congo respectively.

The CAF Champions League will continue next weekend with the group stage, matchday two fixtures on 6-7 December.

Shooting Stars progress to semis at WAFU U20

Sierra Leone edged into the semi-finals of the West African Football Union (Wafu) Zone A Under-20 Championship on Friday with a 3-2 win over host Guinea.

A Suffian Kaloko brace ensures Sierra Leone’s Shooting Stars are into the semi-finals after overcoming Guinea at the September 28 stadium in Conakry Guinea. Senegal will top the group if they defeat Mauritania.

As a result, Sierra Leone will face the second-best team from Group B in the semi-finals.

Guinea had taken the lead from a bullet header by Gibrill Sylla in the 15th minute. However, the resilient Sierra Leone side responded immediately with a clever counter-attacking football as Daramy Sesay drew level in the 19th minute.

To make matters worse for the host side Sierra Leone’s Shootings Stars aggressively took the game to their counterpart, and it paid off when hattrick hero Suffian Kolokoh against Mauritania put his side ahead in the 21st minute.

After the restart, the Guineans rally their troops as they restore parity through a long-range strike in the 65th minute, but with another speedy response from goal poacher Suffian Kaloloh, who completed his brace sink the home side to defeat after a tough 90-minute encounter.

Kaloko’s brace takes his tally to six in the competition and presently the tournament top scorer. He has been named twice Man of Match for his hattrick against Mauritania and a brace to overcome Guinea.

Challenge Cup: FC Kallon boss unfazed by EE Lions threat

FC Kallon head coach Amidu Karim says his team has been working endlessly on strategies as they prepare to contain the champions East End Lions in Sunday’s Challenge Cup.

Karim side suffered two defeat against EE Lions during the 2018/2019 season conceded three goals.

As a result, the East End giant side won the title under the supervision of technician John Keister with a four-point margin.

Sunday’s tie at the Siaka Steven Stadium will be their biggest test ahead of the new Sierra Leone Premier League 2019/2020 campaign.

“Last season we suffered two defeats against East End Lions which led to us losing the title to them. However, this time is going to be different,” Coach Karim told FSL News.

“We want to give a good account of ourselves on Sunday. East End Lions are a good side, and that is why our approach is going to be different.”

“Pre-season has been good, the entire technical team, including the players, are in high spirit. Last season we have showcased what we are capable of.”

“They’re our strongest arch-rivals and the last season table can attest to that. Notwithstanding, I and the entire technical team working towards the title but first this Sunday’s tie is our focus.”

Former East End Tigers striker Baimba Sesay, who scored 13 goals last season is a potential coach Karim new weapon.

Lions guided by Manchester-born Keister remain undefeated as they take on the Cavaliers hoping to continue with their fine run.

Sierra Leone down to 118th in latest Fifa ranking

Sierra Leone have moved a place down from 117th to 118th in latest Fifa ranking announced Thursday, November 28th following a home draw with Lesotho, and defeat to Benin in their opening two African Cup of Nations qualifying matches.

The Leone Stars of Sierra Leone open their Cameroon 2021 campaign with a 1-1 draw in a closed-doors encounter against Lesotho November 11 before a 1-0 defeat in Benin a few days later.

In September, Sierra Leone was eliminated from the 2022 World Cup preliminary qualifiers by Liberia on a 3-2 aggregate scoreline over two legs.

Elsewhere, Sierra Leone’s Group L opponent, Nigeria’s Super Eagles moved up four places to 31st in the world and 3rd in Africa.

Nigeria’s back-to-back wins secure 1493 points as they climb four places ranked 31st in the world and third in Africa behind Senegal and Tunisia who occupy first and second place respectively.

The Desert Warriors of Algeria, 2019 Afcon champions, are placed fourth while Morocco, Ghana, Egypt, Cameroon, Mali and DR Congo complete the top 10 teams on the continent.

Meanwhile, Belgium are still top, leading France and Brazil, with England number four in the world. Since the last ranking, Croatia has leapfrogged Portugal and are currently sixth.

Africa Top 10 Senegal, Tunisia, Nigeria, Algeria 5, Morocco, Ghana, Egypt, Cameroon, Mali and Congo DR.

The next FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking will be published on 19 December 2019.
