Augustus Kargbo delighted with exhilarating Reggio Audace

  • Augustus Kargbo has scored four times since joining on loan

Sierra Leone-born Augustus Kargbo has said that he is happy with Reggio Audace attacking prowess after Saturday’s win over Associazione Virtus Verona.

He scored Audace second goal as they thrashed the host team 4-1 in the ongoing Italia Serie C league. The goal was his fourth in twelve matches this season. 

Kargbo, 20, who is on loan from Serie B FC Crotone until the end of the season, last October scored his first brace for Audace against US Triestina. 

They are unbeaten in their last six games winning three and three draws leaving them standing fourth in Serie C Group B table.

The attacker speaking to FSL News reckons his exhilarating side have what it takes to go all the way.

“It was a great victory when you dominated your opponent like the way we did. The season is long, but we want to keep winning matches gathered as many points as possible,”

“Hopefully, we can win the league or make the playoff. Serie B is the target. I am confident that we have a very good team to achieve our goal.”

Kargbo added, “We are in a good position to even win the league if we keep winning matches. We have a very good group of players helping each other on and off the pitch.”

“One defeat all season to the current league leaders Vicenza Virtus. We are eight points behind them, but we know we are capable of chasing the top three. Lots of draws because of some of our mistakes.”

Their next Serie C outing is a tricky home tie against third-place side Padova Calcio on Monday.

Ports Authority handed defending Sierra Leone Premier League champions, East End Lions, their first league defeat in 25 matches played under coach John Keister.

A Djibril Koulibaly goal in the 79th minutes helped the Waterfronts boys edge out their East End giants rivals in their opening fixture of the new campaign at the Siaka Steven Stadium on Saturday.

The defeat to Ports marked their second in six days following the Challenge Cup defeat to FC Kallon Sunday 1st December. 

Port Authority midfielder Alfred Nyuma (Shakila) was named Man of the Match after a brilliant performance for his side.

The Killers under the supervision of John Keister went undefeated in 24 matches en route to winning the 2019 league title. 

Keister’s men open their 2018/2019 season with a victory over Mighty Blackpool in January 2019 since then they never look back. 

On Friday, East End Tigers opening their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces soccer team.

A debut goal for Tigers new acquisition Philip Neville was enough as they take home maximum points.

Senegal crowned WAFU Zone A U20 champions

Senegal are the champions of the 2019 West African Football Union (Wafu) Zone A Under-20 Championship after beating Mali 2-0 in the final at General Lansana Conté Stadium in Nongo on Saturday.

The Senegalese opened the scoring in the 14th minute through N’diaye Abdoulaye from a free-kick. 

The Malians forced their opponent to retreat as they search for an equaliser, but a resilient Senegalese defence was at there best in the first 45 minutes.

After the restart, an own goal from Malians Eagles defender, Lassine Tangara was enough as Senegal won the WAFU second edition championship.

The seven West African nation participated are Guinea, host country, Senegal, Liberia, Mauritania, Gambia, Sierra Léone and Mali). Matches played at two stadiums September 28 and General Lansana Conté de Nongo.

Sierra Leone who lost heavily to their Senegalese counterpart in their opening game of the competition were defeated 8-7 on penalties following a goalless draw with The Gambia in the third-place contest.

Suffian Kalokoh wins WAFU U20 top scorer award

Suffian Kalokoh has won the 2019 West African Football Union (Wafu) Zone A Under-20 Championship Golden Boot award with his six goals for Sierra Leone during the tournament.

The AIK Freetong player on loan to Bo Rangers was instrumental throughout the tournament. He was virtually guaranteed the prize ahead of Saturday’s third-place contest against The Gambia.

He scored his first international hat-trick as Sierra Leone beat 10-man Mauritania 3-1 in match the day of the competition before another brace to help Sierra Leone down host Guinea en-route to the semi-finals.

Kalokoh scored six goals ahead of all the strikers from the eight representing Countries and was named Man of the Match after his three goals against Mauritania. 

The young attacker scored his first international goal on his debut against Liberia at the 2019 Wafu Nations Cup in Senegal in September.

Kalokoh finished behind Musa Tombo and Baimba Sesay as the third-highest goal scorer with 10 goals, while playing for Old Edwardians last season in the Sierra Leone Premier League. 

Meanwhile, the Shooting Stars of Sierra Leone were defeated by the Gambia 8-7 on penalties after a goalless 90th minute of good youth football action at the September 28 stadium in Conakry Guinea.

ASVG set to kick-start first Collegiate League in Africa

Africa Sports Ventures Group (ASVG) have confirmed plans to establish the first-ever Collegiate Sports League in Africa.

The Collegiate Sports League is slated for October 2020 with 32 universities, competing in football and basketball.

A list of 32 universities participating will be announced at the ASVG event in the first half of 2020 at the company’s Headquarters in Accra, Ghana.

The limited liability sports solutions, services and business corporation, a few days ago, confirmed reaching an agreement Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) and other stakeholders.

“Africa Sports Ventures Group (ASVG), having reached a milestone agreement with the Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) to institute a continental Student-Athlete Sports Scholarship programme for Universities in Africa on November 22nd 2019, will now establish the first-ever African Collegiate Sports League for all sports disciplines mirroring the NCAA in the USA,” ASVG said in a statement.

“The League will be called the Africa Collegiate League, and a key purpose for its formation besides being a support structure for the Africa Sports Scholarship Fund is to bridge the gap between the Youth Sports stage and the Professional Level in the development continuum of Athletes in Africa.

“The Africa Sports Scholarship Fund has been set up to incentivise and heighten Student-Athlete Participation in Sports in Universities across Africa and provide opportunities for young sportsmen and women coming up from the school system.

December’s Sierra Leone Premier League news in brief

The first week of the new Sierra Leone Premier League season Eastern Province-based club Kamboi Eagles and inform Bo Rangers made it clear they want to be part of the title contenders after their respective victories.

Kamboi Eagles kicked off their 2019/2020 campaign with an impressive victory over Central Parade at the Kenema field with goals Abubakarr Kanu and Ahmed Vandi as they eased past their visitors. 

At the Bo Stadium, Inform Rangers snatched victory courtesy of their new acquisition Prince Barrie who scored the very first goal of the League season after finding the back of the net to give Bo Rangers all three points against Freetown City.

Elsewhere in the day’s other fixtures, the dream chasers, FC Johansen played to a 1-all draw with Might Blackpool at the Siaka Steven Steven.

Host Johansen came from behind to force a draw with a goal from Rafael Koroma who cancelled out Kandeh Sesay’s opener.

In Koidu, Diamond Stars were unable to take maximum points as their visitors demonstrated class. Anti Drugs the 2018/2019 bottom-placed side was out to give a good account of themselves as both sides settled for a barren draw.

The entertaining and thrilling season-opening games will continue with more games across Sierra Leone.

The Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces soccer team will host last season ninth-placed side East End Tigers on Friday at the National Stakia Steven Stadium.

On Saturday 7th December, defending champions, East End Lions open their season with a tricky tie against Ports Authority while last season’s runners up FC Kallon go toe to toe against Old Edwardians. Another contest soccer fans roaring to watch on Monday 8th.
