Despite Covid-19 fears, Caf to maintain all schedules

Despite Covid-19 fears, Caf to maintain all schedules

The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has chosen to maintain the schedule of all its competitions, amidst the outbreak of coronavirus, which was labelled a pandemic on Wednesday, BBC Sport reports.

Some 48 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers are set to take place in nearly 50 countries across the continent at the end of March.

Meanwhile, the African Nations Championship (CHAN) is scheduled to take place in Cameroon between 4-25 April.

“According to (the) World Health Organisation, no African country till date has been declared high risk,” Caf said in a statement.

“Consequently, Caf has decided to maintain the schedule of all competitions.”

Shortly after Caf released its statement on Wednesday, the World Health Organisation described the outbreak as a pandemic, meaning it is spreading in multiple countries around the world at the same time.

Kenya’s government has already stated that no sporting competitors can leave the country to travel abroad until early April, meaning the Harambee Stars’ Nations Cup tie in Comoros on 29 March is uncertain.

Coronavirus cases have currently been declared in twelve African nations, with Egypt the worst affected.

On Tuesday, Algeria’s government announced that the remainder of the football season would be played behind closed doors because of the outbreak while others, such as Rwanda among others, have insisted on no handshaking before games.

Caf officials are set to visit CHAN host Cameroon – which has suffered two cases – later this week to ascertain the level of preparedness to combat the spread of the disease during the competition for African players based in their national leagues.

“A delegation from the Caf Medical Committee is scheduled to visit Cameroon from 14-15 March,” the statement added.

“The purpose of this mission is to assess all the preventive measures taken by the Local Organising Committee.”

Dartford keeper Sesay signals Sierra Leone interest

Dartford keeper Sesay signals Sierra Leone interest

Dartford FC goalkeeper, Alhaji Sesay, believes he can help solve the Sierra Leone goalkeeping problem ahead of the 2021 African Cup of Nations double-header qualifiers against Nigeria.

Nigeria will host Sierra Leone in the Delta state capital on March 27 before travelling to Freetown to confront the Stars at the Siaka Stevens Stadium four days later.

Sesay has been outstanding with English National League South side Dartford making over 11 appearances this season.

The Kent-based club standing fifth on the log of the National League South with Sesay as their first keeper.

The 21-year-old, who has been patiently waiting for his opportunity, is ready to provide competition for first-choice man Solomon Zombo Morris.

Morris was injured before Sierra Leone’s 1-0 defeat in Benin and was replaced by the home-based keeper, Mohamed Kamara.

Highly rated Kamara played well against Benin in matchday two of the African Nations Cup qualifiers. However, he has been on the sidelines with a fractured right ankle after colliding with another player during his side East End Lions 1-0 win over Old Edwardians last December.

“I can’t wait to get my second call to the national team, and I feel I am in good shape with more matches under my belt this season, I think the Sierra Leone goalkeeping worries are over,” Sesay told Journal Newspaper Sierra Leone.

In August 2018, Sierra Leone Coach, John Keister named Sesay amongst the 35-man provisional squad for September’s African Nations Cup qualifier at the Hawassa Stadium in Ethiopia.

Sesay, alongside Coventry City striker Amadou Bakayoko, Queen Park Rangers defender Osman Kakay, all received their first international call-up by Sierra Leone.

He started his career in Freetown with Kallon FC-a team owned by former Sierra Leone and Inter Milan star- Mohammed Kallon.

Diamond Stars end FC Kallon’s unbeaten run

A thirty-five-yard superb free-kick from Momoh Conteh in the 57th min was enough as Diamond Stars beat visitors FC Kallon in the Sierra Leone Premier League.
