Pyramids’ book CAF Confed Cup final spot after late goals

  • Pyramids secured a comfortable 2-0 win over AC Horoya in the 2019/20 CAF Confederation Cup semifinal match at the Mohamed V Stadium on Tuesday night.
  • The victory saw the Egyptian club advance to the final where they will face Moroccan side RS Berkane, while Guinea’s Horoya were eliminated from the competition.

Pyramids controlled the match from the start with Omar Gaber pulling the strings from the midfield for the Egyptian side.

The first real chance of the game came 17 minutes into the encounter after the Horoya defence was exposed.

However, Horoya goalkeeper Moussa Camara was alert and he produced a magnificent save to deny Mohamed Farouk.

Camara was the busier of the two keepers as he was called into action seven minutes before the half-hour mark and he gathered Gaber’s long-range shot.

The last goalscoring opportunity of the first-half fell for Gaber after some good work by his teammate Eric Traore in the 37th minute.

However, Gaber’s effort was cleared off the goal-line and the score was 0-0 at the interval following a first-half which was dominated by Pyramids.

Pyramids continued to dominate possession after the restart, but the Guinean champions’ defence looked solid and compact as they contained Ante Cacic’s side.

Croatian coach Cacic decided to make a change in the 73rd minute as winger Ibrahim Hassan replaced striker John Antwi.

Hassan made an immediate impact as he netted in the 74th minute with a low shot which went through Camara’s legs to make it 1-0 to Pyramids having being set-up by Gaber.

It was soon 2-0 to Pyramids when Farouk set-up Abdallah El-Said, who cut inside before beating Camara with a brilliant finish.

Attacker Alseny Camara Agogo was introduced in the closing stages of the game by Horoya coach Lamine N’Diaye and he scored in the 86th minute, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

Ultimately, the match ended in a 2-0 victory in favour of Pyramids, who contained Horoya in the dying minutes of the match.

Christian Caulker open to Sierra Leone return

Christian Caulker open to Sierra Leone return

  • Former Sierra Leone first-choice goalie Christian Caulker has admitted that his door still open for a Leone Stars return.
  • Caulker, who plays for Maryland Bobcats in the USA, was among 15 players and officials suspended indefinitely by the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) over allegations of match-fixing in July 2014.

Six-year on, he has maintained his innocent and has been waiting on the final findings of the investigation.

Speaking to FSL UK, Caulker acknowledged that the present situation is out of his hands, but he is a son of the soil, who will let bygone be bygone.

“It’s obvious, certain issues would need to be addressed before any possibility of my return to Sierra Leone A team but I’m devoted, ready to save my country at any given time.”

“It has been stressful the allegation of match-fixing, but I know I am not guilty, so if my country needs me, why not?”
“Representing my country again will be an honour as always.”

His last appearance for the Leone Stars was in 2013 in a 2-1 defeat away to Tunisia during the World Cup Qualifiers.

Before his suspension, Caulker, 31, has played 20 times for Leone Stars including a goalless draw with South Africa in 2008, the match was part of the match-fixing inquiry.

Meanwhile, Mauritania defeated Sierra Leone 2-1 in an International friendly at the Cheikha Boïdiya, Nouakchott on friendly.

The Leone Stars will continue their preparation against Niger on Tuesday ahead of the doubleheader against Nigeria next month.
