Gambia top FIFA U20 World Cup Group F unbeaten

  • Korea Republic 0-0 The Gambia

The Gambia maintained their unbeaten run at this FIFA U-20 World Cup™ with a draw against Korea Republic as they secured the first position in Group F.

By topping the section, the Africans set up a last-16 duel with Uruguay, while their Asian opponents – who finished second – will take on Ecuador.

On chances created, the Gambians should be advancing on the back of a third straight win after dominating an at-times dreary encounter.

Adama Bojang alone could easily have scored a hat-trick, with the best chance of the first half wasted when the unmarked striker mistimed a header and sent the ball high and wide via his left shoulder.

Then, after the same player had made a better connection early in the second period, only to find Moon Hyuno equal to his header, he fired home off the underside of the bar with 20 minutes remaining and turned in agony to see the assistant referee’s flag raised for offside.

Substitute Sallifah Colley also saw a goal-bound effort tipped onto the post and back into the arms of the grateful Moon, leaving The Gambia to conclude that this wasn’t to be their night in front of goal.

The Young Scorpions can nonetheless reflect on an outstanding Group F campaign and will be looking forward with confidence to their last-16 date with La Celeste.

Sierra Leone, Guinea share spoils, Senegal thrash Guinea-Bissau

On Wednesday afternoon, Sierra Leone opened their 2023 WAFU Zone A U-20 Women’s Cup with a 1-1 draw against neighbours Guinea at the Southern Arena.

The host gots-off to a fast start with a brilliant freekick from skipper Kadoatu Kamara in the opening two minutes but were unable to extend their lead.

Guinea, on the other hand, after conceding early on in the match, maintained their composure as they rallied an equaliser just before the break.

Guinea’s Fatoumata Dede Diallo scored the leveller from a freekick that was in a promising area and delivered precisely.

Both teams were unable to find the winner as they settled for a 1-1 draw scoreline.

In the second encounter, giant Senegal dominated and walloped their Guinea-Bissau counterparts 4-0 at the same venue on Wednesday.

Hapsatou M Dialo scored a hat-trick, and Walimata Ndiaye with the other goal as they claimed maximum points.

As a result, host Sierra Leone and Guinea with a point apiece. Guinea-Bissua bottom with no point ahead of taking on Shooting Starlets.

Sierra Leone striker Buya Turay pens Odense deal in Denmark

Danish Super League side Odense Boldklub confirmed the signing of Sierra Leone striker Mohamed Buya Turay on a two-year deal.

“Ahead of the coming season, we have agreed with former Allsvenskan top scorer Mohamed Buya Turay on a two-year contract,” the club said in a statement.

“We have agreed with Mohamed Buya Turay on a two-year deal so that the striker from Sierra Leone will at least be one of the stripes until the summer of 2025.

Buya is a natural goalscorer with high speed. His qualities should help us develop OB’s style of play to include even more offensive threats to the opposition’s goal.

We are happy that Buya is already in place in Odense and is now looking forward to starting his preparations for the coming season, says Björn Wesström, OB football director.”
