- The West Africans claimed bronze medal at the African Nations Championship after proving too strong for hosts Cameroon on Saturday.
- Guinea ended this year’s tournament strongly with a 2-0 triumph to win the third-place playoff in the tournament that is exclusively for footballers who compete domestically in Africa.
A fast start from Syli Nationale helped them to two first-half goals as Cameroon were unable to respond at the Reunification Stadium in Douala.
Guinea got off to the perfect start when Morlaye Sylla, who has enjoyed an impressive tournament for the West African nation, split the Indomitable Lions defence before slotting in past Cameroon keeper Haschou Kerrido to make it 1-0 inside the first ten minutes.
They doubled their advantage just before the break when Mamadouba Camara finished decisively after springing Cameroon’s offside trap to make it 2-0.
In the second half, Cameroon tried to rally for a way to a comeback, but their efforts were unproductive.
The final between defending champions Morocco and Mali is set for Yaoundé on Sunday with FIFA President Gianni Infantino expected to attend.
Although the tournament is restricted to home-based players, matches carry full international status and count toward the monthly FIFA world rankings.

- Uncertainty looms large ahead of the Sierra Leone Football Association election this month in Makeni, Northern Province of Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone superstar, Mohamed Kallon could be offered a lifeline to contest for president of the Sierra Leone Football Association after the country’s parliamentary sports committee offered to mediate in his disputed disqualification from the race.
After a meeting with members of the FA including top government officials in parliament on Friday, the committee issued a four-point statement to quell the controversy following Kallon’s disqualification.
It called in the sports ministry and the National Sports Authority to further engage all “stakeholders” who in turn should send, in writing, to the committee, solutions for a successful resolution of the current “impasse”.
Former Sierra Leone skipper Mohamed Kallon and prominent administrator, Kasho J Holland-Cole’s nomination process was declined despite their appeals.
Parliament oversight committee will meet with members on Wednesday, according to the statement.
Despite not taking any position to influence the FA’s electoral process, there are fears however that the committee’s mediation could be interpreted by Fifa as political interference which could lead to a global ban by the world football body.
Sierra Leone was previously banned by Fifa in 2018 after the anti-corruption agency raided and closed the FA’s offices following allegations of corruption against incumbent Isha and Secretary-general Chris Kamara.
Both were later acquitted and found not guilty.
It is worth mentioning that under Johansen’s leadership, Sierra Leone is renowned for its power struggle.
