Caf bans Sierra Leone’s decrepit national stadium

Caf bans Sierra Leone’s decrepit national stadium

  • Sierra Leone’s decrepit national stadium has been banned by CAF from staging foreign matches until it up to International standards.

In a communication to the Sierra Leone Football Association, the Confederation of African Football, CAF, informed the FA that the Capital Stadium in Freetown lacks adequate facilities, Football Sierra Leone understands.

Sierra Leone are due to host Benin in their next home game on 30 March, their final African Cup of Nations Group L qualifier, days after their away tie at the Setsoto Stadium in Lesotho.

However, CAF latest decision will force the SLFA to look on the road for a neutral venue for Leone Stars to play their Group L final match against Benin.

The Leone Stars goalless draw against Nigeria has exposed the reckless and fragile state of the Siaka Steven Stadium, many soccer pundits believe.

After the Nigeria game last year, we understand Caf warned the SLFA to improve facilities at the stadium, but little has been done since.

The Brookfields Stadium was built in 1979 and has been in existence for over 40 years.

FIFA suspended the venue in 1992 for one year due to overcrowding. The Leone Stars had to use the 28th September Stadium in neighbouring Guinea to play host to Senegal and Togo in qualifiers for the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations.

In March 2008, FIFA banned the said venue due to poor dressing rooms and a sub-standard pitch.

In February 2017, the Presidential Pavilion of the Siaka Stevens Stadium was given a facelift with 950 chairs installed as part of the upgrade to an all-seater international standard.

Fankaty Dabo set to start against Blackburn Rovers

Fankaty Dabo set to start against Blackburn Rovers

  • Fankaty Dabo, who started on the bench in Coventry City’s midweek 1-0 defeat to Swansea at the Liberty Stadium, is set to start for the first time since January after recovering from injury.

Rival right wing-back Julien Dacosta suffered an injury and was replaced with Dabo, 25, in the 46th minute against Swansea on Wednesday.

Dabo last played full throttle for Sky Blues against Sheffield Wednesday, where he captained the Sky Blues for the first time.

Mark Robins’ side has managed only one win in their last six and Blackburn Rovers will provide another acid test for West Midlands’ side.

Coventry suffered a 4-0 defeat in the reverse fixture at St Andrew’s having played most of the game with 10-men after Michael Rose’s early red card.

Robins is expecting a different game on Saturday from the one played between the two teams earlier in the season and feels all the pressure is on Tony Mowbray’s side.

“We’ve got to go there and put in a really strong performance that defeat stung against Blackburn for a number of reasons it’s a different game from the first one early in the season, they’re in a bit of a sticky patch, but they have some really good players in their squad,” he told club’s website.

Rovers’ boss, on the other hand, has said he is not worried about his job after a run of poor form.

Tony Mowbray noted that he doesn’t ‘sit in fear’ of his position as he looks to arrest Rovers’ poor run against Coventry City this afternoon having lost their last five matches.

“I don’t sit here fighting for my job, I don’t sit here in fear, I sit here wanting to win the next football match and put the best team we can on that grass,” Mowbray said. “I’m here, seven in the morning until seven at night, working, doing what I do, leaving no stone unturned.”

Both teams have been struggling this season, with Rovers in 16th position while City standing 20th in the English Championship log.
