Lone Star defeats Leone Stars 2-0 to win MRU tourney

Liberia won the maiden Mano River Union (MRU) football for peace tournament in Kenema Eastern Province in Sierra Leone on 28 April.

After a goalless first half between the two neighbours, Liberia Nimba Kwado striker Alloy Brown double were enough in the second half to clinch the Mano River Union (MRU) football for peace tournament.

FIFA secretary-general Fatma Samoura, Liberia Football Association President Mustapha Raji, Sierra Leone Sports Minister Ibrahim Nyelenkeh and Sierra Leone Football Association President Isha Johansen among the dignitaries that graced the occasion at the newly newly-constructed artificial turf in Kenema.

Under John Keister, the Leone Stars are still searching for their first win. Sierra Leone has only won once in their last ten matches.

Their last victory was against Liberia in a World Cup qualifying match in Freetown back in September 2019.

Wednesday’s defeat to Liberia has added to the recent friendlies at the Stade Cheikha Boydie in Nouakchott Mauritania and the Stade Général Seyni Kountché, Niamey, Niger.

In the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations Group L qualifiers, the Leone Stars drew in all their last three matches against Nigeria and Lesotho.

Sierra Leone winger with Real Balompédica Linense squad in Celebration

Playing for Spanish third-tier side Real Balompédica Linense, Alhassan Koroma, 20, has been a fundamental player in Antonio Calderón’s side promotion campaign.

A goalless draw achieved last Sunday against Real Murcia stadium has consummated the promotion to First RFEF of the popular Balona next season.

Koroma believes winning promotion from Segunda División B semi-pro to Primera división RFEF Professional League has helped him develop since he joined the club in 2019.

This season, the Sierra Leone international scored four vital goals in the race to promotion in all competitions in 23 appearances and has emerged as one of Sierra Leone’s developing talents, also a key member of the national team setup.

“The promotion means a lot to me. As a young player, I feel blessed to be part of the experience and achievement,” Koroma told FSL news.

“I have gained lots in terms of experience in and out of the pitch since moving to Spain. It’s no secret that I want to achieve is football. My aims and objectives are to play at the top level in Europe to prove to the world that Sierra Leone players can do it, and they have all that it takes if they are given the opportunity.”

“It has been a great season with some wonderful moment. I am pleased with the club, the people of Balona. The team is like a family to me, and I have enjoyed every moment spent here.”

Sierra Queens suffer 3-1 defeat to Liberia in MRU peace friendly

Sierra Leone’s Sierra Queens suffered a 3-1 defeat to their Liberian counterparts in the maiden Mano River Peace Tournament in Southern Province of Sierra Leone on Monday.

Goals from Hawa Kpan, Angline Kieh and Miatta Morris were enough as the Liberians walloped Sierra Queens.

Kumba Brima gave the host the lead in the 60th minute after a stunning performance by her side before Hawa Kpan’s 62nd-minute goal level the scoreline.

Angeline Kieh and Miatta Morris 70th and 90th goals ensure their triumph.

Sierra Leone men homebased team will take on their Liberian counterparts when the competition continues on Wednesday in Kenema at the new Artificial turf.

Davies nets winner in Johansen win as Parade stun Diamond Stars

FC Johansen secured its first win in their opening fixture of the ongoing Sierra Leone Premier League against Kamboi Eagles at the BO Mini stadium over the weekend. 

Melvin Davies scored the only goal in the 87th-minute, his second goal against Kamboi Eagles. Last season, he was on target against the Eagles to stop their unbeaten run during the 2019/20 League season. 

Abdulai Bah Head Coach FC Johansen express his delight after securing maximum point away to Kamboi Eagles in their season opener. 

“I felt happy to win against a team with the tendency of winning the league. It’s a good step for us to challenge for this year’s title, ” Bah told FSL News. 

Bah further noted that they put up a brave fight until the end of the match, as such display yields the dividend.

FC Johansen next outing is against Sierra Leone Police on 2nd May at the National Stadium.

On the same day, Central Parade stunned Diamond Stars with a 1-0 win in the Eastern Province town of Sierras Leone.

Kassim Turay, the skipper in the Number 6 jersey, scored from a 35-yeards shot. Their second win over Diamond Stars in three years.

Wusum Stars played to a barren draw against the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces at home.

Sierra Leone U15s draw 1-1 with Liberia in MRU tourney

Sierra Leone came from a goal down to draw 1-1 against their Liberian counterpart in an under-15 men’s friendly encounter on Saturday.
 
Liberia took the lead in the opener of the Mano River Union, MRU tournament at the Bo City Stadium through Leekpilay Holder.
 
Holder gave the visitors the lead, midway in the first half against the run of play before Salieu Bah level the scoreline just before the break.
 
The home side could have won the match when goalie Emmanuel Monger, who replaced Mitchell Laval at halftime, was beaten only for Michell to make clearance for a round of applause from the spectators.
 
The tournament for peacebuilding will continue on Monday, with Sierra Queens locking horns with Liberia female senior team at the same venue.
