AFCON: Jonathan Morsay doubtful for Sierra Leone

AFCON: Jonathan Morsay doubtful for Sierra Leone

Jonathan Morsay is a doubt to represent Sierra Leone for the first time in the African Cup of Nations next month in Cameroon.

Morsay, 24, confirmed the unpleasant news that he injured his hamstring in Panaitolikos 1-0 to Asteras Tripolis on Tuesday and was forced off in the 42nd minute of the tie.

“The club’s physio told me it will take a month to recover, but I am going to Sweden to see a specialist,” the winger to FSL News.

His latest injury has raised doubt on whether the Sweden-born will be fit enough to be part of the Sierra Leone final squad. In August, the winger signed a two-year contract.

The Leone Stars first continental task after 25-years is against holders Algeria’s Desert Foxes on January 11 at the Japoma Stadium in Douala.

Sierra Leone in Group E set to compete against the Elephant of Ivory Coast on the 16th before their final group tie with Equatorial Guinea at the Lime be Stadium.

Meanwhile, a host of foreign-based has started arriving in Freetown, where the team is presently training.

Randers striker Alhaji Kamara, AGF Aarhus winger Mustapha Bundu on loan from Anderlecth, Geroge Davies from SKN St. Polten in Austria, Kei Kamara, Mohamed Medo Kamara, Mustapha Dumbuya are all in town.

Group E teams – Algeria, Equatorial Guinea and Cote d’Ivoire.

Breaking: FIFA clears former England defender Caulker for Sierra Leone

FIFA has approved a change of association for former England defender Steve Caulker, confirmed a top official of the Sierra Leone Football Association, who wanted to remain anonymous.

As a result, Caulker, 29, presently playing for Gaziantep FK on loan from Fenerbahce, will be a boost to coach John Keister’s side.

The former Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool centre-back, who was part of the Leone Stars training camp in Morocco, is expected to be part of the African Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

In October, the former Queens Park Rangers defender was pleased after playing for the Leone Stars in a 2-1 defeat to Morocco homebased side.

“Playing for Sierra Leone became an obvious choice, an obvious decision,” Caulker said in an Interview.

Caulker will turn 30 before the tournament starts on Jan. 9 in Cameroon. Sierra Leone is in a group with Algeria, Ivory Coast and Equatorial Guinea.

Also, Greek top-tier side Panetolikos new acquisition Jonathan Morsay was approved to represent Sierra Leone. This was confirmed yesterday by the General Secretary of the SLFA, Chris Kamara.

The Swedish-born, hailing from a Sierra Leonean parent, is presently injured. His injury has raised doubt about his fitness ahead of the Algeria game on January 11 2022.

Netherlands-born winger Issa Kallon also received the green light to represent Sierra Leone. He has played for Dutch youth sides. Kallon, who is trading with SC Cambuur, was part of the Leone Stars 2-1 friendly defeat to Morocco team B during training camp in October.

Sierra Leone is in Group E after reaching the tournament after 25-years following a 1-0 win over Benin on June 16 at Stade Général Lansana Conté de Nongo.

The TotalEnergies 2021 Africa Cup of Nations is the 33rd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

AC MILAN foundation donates football items to Rodney Strasser

Rodney Strasser has confirmed receiving several football items as a donation from his former club AC Milan during their 122nd-Anniversary celebrations on Thursday.

The AC Milan Foundation has considered having a chapter in Sierra Leone due to its good relationship with its former player.

Fondazione Milan was established in 2003, intending to offer social engagement from AC Milan to meet the needs of local communities in difficult and socially emarginated circumstances.

The foundation intends to build a world that helps young people to grow through sport to discover and better themselves by gaining balance and wellbeing and, in turn, actively contribute to the growth and improvement of their community.

He was part of the AC Milan squad that won the 2010–11 Serie A and their 18th league title.

Born in Freetown, Strasser began his career with local club Kallon before moving to Italy to join Milan in 2007. Rodney Strasser will always be remembered for his first professional goal in a 1–0 league win over Cagliari on 6 January.

AC Milan Technical Director Paolo Cesare Maldini and other Milan Stars were Part of the Celebrations.

Meanwhile, the club prepared a special gift to its fans with a tribute to Tony Renis and Massimo Guantini, authors of the historic anthem that have accompanied Rossoneri’s for many years.

CAF: AFCON tournament set to go ahead as planned

CAF: AFCON tournament set to go ahead as planned

  • There were fears the tournament would be delayed further amid the spread of the Omicron Virus.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) in a joint statement with the Government of the Republic of Cameroon, Cameroonian Football Association (FECAFOOT), regarding the plan to counter the pandemic in relation to the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations 2021 (AFCON 2021), have insisted that the African Cup of Nations will still be held in January 2022.

The organising bodies have acknowledged the seriousness of the Omicron virus and have put measures in place to prevent Cameroonians and everyone who will be at the tournament.

The African football body stressed that despite the additional challenge posed by the pandemic, the AFCON must take place as planned; the official opening ceremony is scheduled to take place on 9 January 2022 at the Complexe Sportif d’Olembé.

CAF says, in less than 25 days, the best 24 African football teams will participate in the AFCON 2021. However, special measures must be taken seriously in connection with this important and prestigious event.

The Cameroonian government, through its Minister of Health and the Minister of Sport, Physical Education, CAF and FECAFOOT, have decided that:

  • Supporters may only enter stadiums to attend AFCON 2021 matches if they are fully vaccinated and are able to show a negative PCR test result that is no older than 72 hours or a negative antigen test result, no older than 24 hours.

  • The competent health authorities will take all necessary action to facilitate vaccination and the performance of screening tests at all competition sites.

  • To ensure objectiveness and neutrality as well as, trust on all sides, CAF will use an independent, internationally recognised laboratory to test the national-team players and their delegations.
