Sierra Leone’s Idris Kanu pens Northampton Town loan deal

Sierra Leone International Idris Kanu has signed for Northampton Town on loan from Peterborough United for the rest of the season.

The 22-year-old Kanu, who was part of the Sierra Leone Africa Cup of Nations squad in Cameroon, is looking for a fresh start.

The attacker played 17 times and scored twice in League 1 in 2020/21 as Peterborough won promotion to the Championship.

Kanu previously spent time with Aldershot and Boreham Wood earlier in his career. Town’s manager Jon Brady says he is pleased to have the forward player to Sixfields.

“Idris is a creative player who is direct, he can travel with the ball and he has pace,” Manager Jon Brady told the clubs website.

“He can be a threat at the top of the pitch or out wide and can play in more than one attacking position with the ability to create chances. Idris can be tricky to handle for defenders and he is an explosive player who can make things happen.

“Over the last 12 months, he has had the experience of both League 1 and the Championship and we think he will prove a good addition for us.”

Achraf Hakimi nets as Morocco beat Malawi to reach quarter-finals

Africa Cup of Nations last 16, Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo – Morocco 2 (En-Nesyri 45’, Hakimi 70’) Malawi 1 (Mhango 7’)

A sensational free-kick from Achraf Hakimi lifted Morocco to a 2-1 win over Malawi and into the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals.

Malawi’s Gabadinho Mhango gave his nation a shock lead in the first half with arguably the goal of the tournament from 35-yards out, but a thumping header from Youssef El Nesyri and Hakimi’s set-piece booked Morocco’s place in the last eight.

Vahid Halilhodzic’s side, considered one of the favourites to win the tournament, will play Ivory Coast or Egypt in the next round.

Morocco began the game firmly on the front foot and were piling numbers forward from the first whistle, but Mhango stunned the Atlas Lions with a goal of the year contender in the seventh minute.

The 29-year-old Orlando Pirates striker picked the ball up near the halfway line before he fired a vicious curling strike beyond the helpless Yassine Bounou in goal for his third goal of the tournament.

Mhango came close to scoring again in the 22nd minute as he broke behind the Morocco defence, but he dragged his low strike just wide.

After Watford midfielder Imran Louza hit the bar 10 minutes later, Malawi goalkeeper Charles Thomu was extremely busy. He made great diving saves to deny Hakimi and Sofiane Boufal from close range.

But on the stroke of half-time Morocco got a deserved equaliser through En Nesyri, powerfully heading in a fine Selim Amallah cross at the far post.

Morocco continued to push for a winner in the second half and they got it in stunning fashion in the 70th minute as Hakimi curled his sublime free-kick into the top corner.

Stampede outside Olembe Stadium as Cameroon through to quarterfinals

Hosts Cameroon progress at the African Cup of Nations was overshadowed by a stampede outside the stadium that reportedly killed at least six people during the host nation’s victory over Comoros on Monday.

Reporters says the crash happened as crowds struggled to get access to Olembe Stadium in the capital of Yaounde as Cameroon beat Comoros 2-1 to reach the quarterfinals.

Hosts Indomitable Lions will face The Gambia, who defeated Guinea to progress to the quarterfinals.

CAF statement reads: “CAF is currently investigating the situation and trying to get more details on what transpired. We are in constant communication with the Cameroon government and the Local Organizing Committee.

Debutant Gambia stun Guinea to reach AFCON quarterfinal

The Gambia put themselves in the continental history football books after they defeated Guinea 1-0 in their last sixteen AFCON match on Monday to progress.

The GAMBIA stunned their opponents 1-0 on Monday to make it through to the last eight of the competition.

The West African Nation has caused a shock at the last-16 stage of the Africa Cup of Nations by stunning Guinea 1-0 to reach the quarter-finals.

Making their debut in the tournament, were the lowest-ranked FIFA team competing, sitting down in 150th in the world.

They had already caused a stir by qualifying from the group Mauritiana, Mali and Tunisia but were the heavy underdogs going into the clash against Guinea.

A resilient Gambia side once again upset the odds in Cameroon thanks to a 71st minute Musa Barrow goal. Their winger Yusupha Nije was shown a red card on 87 minutes, but Guinea had a man sent off themselves when Ibrahima Conte was given his marching orders in added time.

And in the end, Gambia managed to hold on, leading to wild scenes of celebration. It remains to be seen just how much further they can progress in the tournament.

Sierra Leone’s Idris Kanu set for Northampton Town loan move

Sierra Leone and Peterborough United attacker Idris Kanu in transfer talks with Cobblers, Football Sierra Leone understands.

Kanu, 22, who was an unused player for Sierra Leone in the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, has confirmed that the deal should be announced soon.

The player is in search of regular football and has opted for a loan move away from Weston Homes Stadium as he bid to revive his frequent action.

Kanu, who can play in multiple positions, has made 69 appearances for Posh (48 of them as a substitute) since moving to London Road from Aldershot as a 16-year-old in August 2017.

The former Boreham Wood man has only started one game for Posh this season, the 3-0 Championship defeat at Swansea City in October. He scored his first Posh goal in an EFL Trophy win at Northampton in September 2019.

He registered his first Football League goal for the club during a 7-0 win over Accrington Stanley last season before scoring again in a 4-1 win at Doncaster Rovers in the final match of the campaign.

The Sierra Leone international has previously been on loan at Boreham Wood and Port Vale.

He could become Northampton’s third loan signing in this window after Tyler Magloire and Chanka Zimba arrived earlier this month.

Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles down 10-man Nigeria to reach quarterfinals

Tunisia Carthage Eagles knocked out Nigeria from the round of 16 stages of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Cameroon following a shock 1-0 victory thanks to a Youseff Msakni goal at the ROumde Adjia stadium in Garoua on Sunday.

Despite coming into the encounter with several players and their coach not available due to COVID-19, Tunisia emerged winners over the Super Eagles in a shock result.

After a goalless first half skipper, Youssef Msakni gave Tunisia the lead two minutes after recess. Maskni beat one defender and found space to shoot from outside the box. Nigerian goalkeeper Emil Okoye had a touch on the ball, but it rested in the net.

As a result, for the first time, the Super Eagles will not reach the Quarterfinals stage of AFCON since 1982, while Tunisia have advanced to the quarter-finals in four consecutive tournaments.

In the first knockout match, the Stallions of Burkina Faso beat Gabon 7-6 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time to qualify to the quarter-finals of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cameroon 2021.

Substitute Ismahila scored the all-important winning penalty to send the Stallions through, following a marathon shoot out.

Kanga, Yannis Yapende and Lloyd Palun missed for Gabon, while Saidou Simpore and Abdoul Tapsoba failed to score for Burkina Faso.

Burkina Faso will play Tunisia in the quarterfinals of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cameroon 2021.
