The Director of Competitions at the Sierra Leone Football Association, Sorie Ibrahim Sesay, has disclosed that the country has registered for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
This comes after an engagement form was sent to all FIFA Member Associations including Sierra Leone to register for the 22nd edition of the FIFA World Cup.
Sesay further disclosed that the completed form, has been sent to football’s world governing body, who in return confirmed Sierra Leone’s registration pending a decision on the suspension.
“It is our obligation to register Sierra Leone for any international tournament despite the suspension by FIFA,” Sesay told Football Sierra Leone correspondent.
“We are hopeful that the current suspension is lifted before the draw in two months’ time”, Sorie added.
Fifa suspended Sierra Leone last October from international football because of alleged government interference in the running of the country’s football association.
As a reminder, the suspension was due to the country’s anti-corruption commission (ACC) setting aside the FA President Isha Johansen and secretary general Christopher Kamara.
The ACC reiterated that under Sierra Leone law, both Isha Johansen and Christopher Kamara must vacate their posts until their case on corruption-related charges concludes. Both denied any wrongdoing.
In October last year, FIFA maintained that Sierra Leone will remain suspended until the alleged corruption trial against Isha Johansen and Chris Kamara concluded.
“The entire suspension hinges on the court matter. If the case is concluded today, we will inform FIFA and they will determine our fate, no matter the outcome of the court’s ruling”.
“The ACC case has dragged in court for too long and, that has been a problem to us as an association because we have been thrown out of most of the competitions we had engaged in including the ongoing 2019 African Cup of Nations Qualifiers”.
“We are appealing to the Judiciary to fast track and quickly conclude the matter so that Sierra Leone will not miss out on the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers as well as the 2021 Nations Cup Qualifying series”.
Sesay noted that the World Cup draw takes place in June but, Sierra Leone will not be included in the process if its suspension is not lifted in time.
The winner of the 2019 Sierra Leone Premier League will walk away with an all-new trophy plus 150,000,000 million Leones in cash.
Board Chairman Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai confirmed the news on Friday during the unveiling ceremony at the National Stadium.
The winners’ grand trophy, runners-up trophy, medals, best player and golden boot accolades were displayed in front of the press and other dignitaries.
This is the first edition of domestic football since 2014. The government of Sierra Leone re-energized the most followed sports in the country after a mouth-watering and record-breaking cash injection.
The country’s Premier League Board received approximately about $250,000 to ensure football is played good-naturedly.
Each of the thirteen teams presently competing for the title received a cash boost of 50 million Leones prior to the kickoff with an additional sum expected for the second phase.
“The Champions will be awarded the Gold trophy, gold medals with the sum of one and fifty million Leones (Le 150,000,000).”
“The runner-up will also receive a cash prize, a Silver Trophy and Silver Medals,” the PLB published on its official Facebook page.
FC Kallon the Cavaliers presently are the league leaders’ four points ahead of Central parade and East End Tigers respectively in the race for the title.

Sierra Leone have been disqualified from Men’s U23 African qualifying campaign by the Confederation of African Football CAF, due to pending Fifa suspension.
It could be recalled that Sierra Leone was billed to face the winner between Cameroon and Chad in the 2019 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations second round qualifiers.
Cameroon eliminated their North-central Africans counterparts 4-1 on aggregate in the first phase of the qualifiers.
Reconfirming the news, the FA’s Director of Competition, Sorie Ibrahim Sesay told this medium that they received a letter on Wednesday with regards to the disqualification.
“We were billed to play Cameroon later this month but, because of the FIFA suspension we were disqualified by CAF.”
As a reminder, FIFA suspended Sierra Leone amid allegations of government interference back in October 2018.
CAF’s decision means Cameroon are through and, will be in the final round to determine the seven nations to join hosts Egypt at the quadrennial competition slated for June 3 to 11, 2019.
This will be the third edition of the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations. Zambia was named as the initially scheduled host, but they withdrew from hosting in July 2017.
CAF announced Egypt as the new host nation of the tournament on 23 September 2017.
The final top three countries automatically qualify to represent the continent at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games football tournament.
