Amadou Bakayoko nets for Bolton in win over Cambridge United

Sierra Leone’s Amadou Bakayoko scored his third of the season to ensure Bolton Wanderers move up to 11th in the League One table – 12 points behind sixth-placed Oxford, who have played a game extra.

Bakayoko, 26, who joined League One side Bolton Wanderers on a two-year deal, took his goal well before top scorer Dapo Afolayan’s netted his 12th goal of the season to help his side to a 2-0 win at the  University of Bolton Stadium on Tuesday.

It was a four straight win for the Wanderers after Ian Evatt side thrashed Sunderland 6-0 last Saturday that cost Lee Johnson his job.

They face Morecambe in their next league outing at the Mazuma Stadium away from home on Saturday.

Alhassan Koroma set to return this weekend against At. Sanluqueño

Sierra Leone winger Alhassan Koroma is in line to make his return from injury this weekend for Spanish First RFEF side RB Linense on Sunday.

Koroma, 21, was part of the Sierra Leone African Cup of Nations squad in Cameroon until his unfortunate injury and was replaced with Italy-based attacker Augustus Kargbo ahead of the Algeria opener.

The Sierra Leone international, who has finally started training this Friday, confirmed he is in line to feature this weekend.

“Since returning from Cameroon on Friday was my first training with the squad. I am hoping to make a return this weekend away to At. Sanluqueño,” Koroma told FSL News.

Due to the recurrence of the muscle injury, the winger admitted he was disappointed after missing out on the chance to represent his country in Cameroon.

“It was a great opportunity for me to establish my talent to the world and was so frustrated as a young player, not to be able to. Again, at times the will of God Injury is part and parcel of every player. No one wishes to pick that up, or neither he nor she knows when the injury comes.”

He has featured in ten First RFEF league games with RB Linense as they sit eights on the log after a 1-1 draw in their last outing against Sabadell.

Kanu makes debut in Northampton Town win over Salford City

New loan signing Idris Kanu made his Northampton Town League Two debut in a 1-0 win over Salford City on Saturday.

Paul Lewis scored the only goal for the promotion hopefuls side after they returned to winning ways with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Salford.

As a result, the host stayed fifth in the League Two standings on 45 points from 25 games played.

Debutant Kanu went close early in the second half before Smith had Salford’s best chance of the game from a free-kick, but again he was thwarted by Roberts.

Kanu replaced Chanka Zimba in the starting line-up, with Eppiah named on the bench.

Jon Brady was pleased with the performance of his team as he reflected on Saturday’s 1-0 home win over Salford City.

“It’s nice to get back to winning ways,” he said.

“I feel it’s three and a half good performances in a row and we played some really strong football in the first half.”

Sierra Leone’s Idris Kanu pens Northampton Town loan deal

Sierra Leone’s Idris Kanu pens Northampton Town loan deal

Sierra Leone International Idris Kanu has signed for Northampton Town on loan from Peterborough United for the rest of the season.

The 22-year-old Kanu, who was part of the Sierra Leone Africa Cup of Nations squad in Cameroon, is looking for a fresh start.

The attacker played 17 times and scored twice in League 1 in 2020/21 as Peterborough won promotion to the Championship.

Kanu previously spent time with Aldershot and Boreham Wood earlier in his career. Town’s manager Jon Brady says he is pleased to have the forward player to Sixfields.

“Idris is a creative player who is direct, he can travel with the ball and he has pace,” Manager Jon Brady told the clubs website.

“He can be a threat at the top of the pitch or out wide and can play in more than one attacking position with the ability to create chances. Idris can be tricky to handle for defenders and he is an explosive player who can make things happen.

“Over the last 12 months, he has had the experience of both League 1 and the Championship and we think he will prove a good addition for us.”

Sierra Leone’s Idris Kanu set for Northampton Town loan move

Sierra Leone’s Idris Kanu set for Northampton Town loan move

Sierra Leone and Peterborough United attacker Idris Kanu in transfer talks with Cobblers, Football Sierra Leone understands.

Kanu, 22, who was an unused player for Sierra Leone in the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, has confirmed that the deal should be announced soon.

The player is in search of regular football and has opted for a loan move away from Weston Homes Stadium as he bid to revive his frequent action.

Kanu, who can play in multiple positions, has made 69 appearances for Posh (48 of them as a substitute) since moving to London Road from Aldershot as a 16-year-old in August 2017.

The former Boreham Wood man has only started one game for Posh this season, the 3-0 Championship defeat at Swansea City in October. He scored his first Posh goal in an EFL Trophy win at Northampton in September 2019.

He registered his first Football League goal for the club during a 7-0 win over Accrington Stanley last season before scoring again in a 4-1 win at Doncaster Rovers in the final match of the campaign.

The Sierra Leone international has previously been on loan at Boreham Wood and Port Vale.

He could become Northampton’s third loan signing in this window after Tyler Magloire and Chanka Zimba arrived earlier this month.

Cambuur winger Issa Kallon reveals ‘bittersweet’ AFCON experience

Cambuur winger Issa Kallon reveals ‘bittersweet’ AFCON experience

Winger Issa Kallon made his Sierra Leone debut in one of the biggest stages in Cameroon as Sierra Leone fought for a 2-2 draw against Ivory Coast and was instrumental from the word go on his first international match for the Leone Stars.

The new Leone Stars weapon had a frustrating time watching from the bench in the goalless draw against Algeria at the Japoma Stadium in Douala on January 11. The Leone Stars first game back at the AFCON since 1996.

Matchday two, he was subbed on in the 73rd minute to replace Maohmed Buya Turay against the Ivory Coast. His smartness, techniques and agility went viral after the 2-2.

In the Leone Stars final Group E match, he was again a substitute in the 1- 0 defeat to Equatorial Guinea. He was an immediate impact after he replaced Kevin Wright in the 75th-minute. His creative movement helped Sierra Leone earn a spot-kick, but unfortunately, the spot-kick was missed by veteran striker Kei Kamara in the 85th-minute.

A Sierra Leone goal could have put them through to the knockout stage of this year’s continental competition for the first time in their history.

The 26-year-old striker who played his football with Cambuur in the Dutch tier said he was pleased with his effort but wished for more playing time on the pitch.

“I am pleased to be part of a great squad, but playing time was not a lot,” Issa Kallon told FSL News in Douala.

“I didn’t expect going to AFCON and only played 35-minute. I am doing well in the Dutch Top-tier in Holland, and for me to sit on the bench every day – was very difficult.”

“I know I can help the team get a better result like in the last game when I came on won a penalty. I just had the feeling the coach was not really aware of my qualities to give such small game time. But, I am happy that in those small minutes, I was able to show myself to my team, the coach and my country Sierra Leone of what I am capable of.”

The result also means the Comoros Islands are through as one of the best third-placed finishers after their surprise 3-2 win over Ghana last Tuesday.

“The penalty miss is difficult to take it could have changed everything for us,” Sierra Leone coach John Keister said.

Meanwhile, the Sierra Leone contingent safely arrived in Freetown late on Saturday after what many described as an impressive outing in Cameroon despite their early exit.
