Uganda part ways with Ex-Sierra Leone Coach McKinstry

Former Sierra Leone coach Johnny Mckinstry has confirmed leaving his role as Uganda head coach.

Northern Irishman, who was appointed in 2019 on a three-year contract, was asked to step aside ahead of Cranes final Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers last month.

Mckinstry confirmed that he has reached an agreement with FUFA to leave his role as Head Coach of the Uganda men’s national team.

“It has been my pleasure to work with dedicated staff and players to develop the Uganda Cranes since 2019 – a period that saw us win 2 in every 3 games, recording a 67% WIN rate – including 12 wins, 3 draws and only 3 defeats across our time together,” he posted on his official website.

Mckinstry was expected to qualify Uganda for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, but they failed in the race.

Under his supervision, Uganda started brilliantly in the 2021 AFCON qualifiers when they top Group B with a win over Malawi and a draw with Burkina Faso. However, their 1-0 defeat to lowly rated South Sudan at the Nyayo National Stadium, Nairobi, ignited FUFA’s decision.

Issa Kallon nets as Cambuur on verge of Dutch Eredivisie promotion

Issa Kallon nets as Cambuur on verge of Dutch Eredivisie promotion

Issa Kallon scored his tenth of the season as SC Cambuur strengthen their Dutch topflight promotion grip with a 4-1 thrashing of Helmond Sport in Leeuwarden on Friday.

Henk de Jong’s team has been clinical throughout the campaign, with two goals from top scorer Robert Mühren, Issa Kallon and an own-goal from Alec VanHoorecbeck, which were enough for the home team.

With four more games to go, Kallon’s Cambuur sitting pretty with 12 points clear off second-placed side De Graafschap.

They are on 82 points with 69 goals in favour, having won 26 games. Cambuur will take on Jong AZ on Friday at Kalverhoek and a win will not only reaffirm their status as Champions but also as a new Eredivisie side.

Kallon, a graduate from FC Utrecht, accounted for his tenth of the season in the 45-minute.

Winger Issa Kallon and compatriot Alex Bangura will be playing the highest level of Dutch football if they stay at the club next campaign.

Sierra Leone ranked 114th on April 7th 2021 FIFA ranking announced

Sierra Leone have moved two places up to 114th place from 116 in the latest Coca-Cola FIFA Ranking released on Wednesday, April 7th.

The Leone Stars gained 1165 points after avoiding defeats against Nigeria and Lesotho in their last three African Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Leone Stars final Group L encounter in the race to Cameroon was postponed due to their visitors contesting five of their players’ positive results in Freetown on March 30th.

CAF says their organising committee made a decision after reviewing official accounts of the incidents that stopped the match from taking place at the scheduled time.

The Sierra Leone Football Association have confirmed they will contest the CAF decision.

Meanwhile, in Africa, Sierra Leone ranked 28th best nation as Ghana made progress as they moved one place up to seventh on the log, ahead of Cameroon (55), Mali (57), and Cote d’Ivoire (59).

Senegal (22), who have dropped down by two places on the world table, still hold the first position in Africa, ahead of Tunisia (26), Nigeria (32), Algeria (33), Morocco (34) and Egypt (36).

Date set for 2021 Cameroon Cup of Nations draw

Date set for 2021 Cameroon Cup of Nations draw

Algeria won the last edition of the Total Africa Cup of Nations played in Egypt.

Caf executive held a videoconference meeting on Tuesday chaired by the new CAF President, Patrice Motsepe.

It was revealed that the draw for the group stages is set for 25 June, most likely after Sierra Leone and Benin’s rescheduled clash. The tournament will kick start on 9 January 2022.

Caf statement reads: “The Executive Committee unanimously approved the proposed dates for the organization of the draw (June 25, 2021) and the Total Africa Cup of Nations 2021 Cameroon final tournament (January 9 to February 6, 2022).”

Among other things, infrastructures, and the challenges presented by COVID-19 PCR tests currently required during competitions, were discussed.”

Below are the 23 teams already qualified, and the winner between Sierra Leone and Benin will take the final spot to complete the 24 nations.

High covid drama as Sierra Leone, Benin decider cancelled

High covid drama as Sierra Leone, Benin decider cancelled

Tuesday’s Cup of Nations qualifier between Sierra Leone and Benin has been cancelled after five Benin players tested positive for covid-19.

The match was due to kick-off at 16hrs local time, but it has been confirmed that the Group L decider will not go ahead.

According to a report, the visitors contested the result and refused to leave their bus on arrival at the Siaka Steven Stadium.

Our sources have confirmed they were told to isolate all positive cases, but they have failed to follow protocols.

A few hours later, after the game had been called off, the SLFA named Dossou Jodri Harod Oluwafemi, Allagbe Kassifa Owolabi Frank Saturnin, Adenon Abdou Kalid Akiola, Ben Yohan Cedric Benjamin and Mounie Steve Michel Kevin as the affected players.

Sierra Leone needed to win at home to reach the tournament for the first time in 25 years. Benin needed only a draw.

One of them to join the already 23 qualified nations to compete in the finals in Cameroon next year to complete the lineup.

What happens next is entirely up to the Confederation of Africa Football body, CAF. However, we will keep our readers posted with developing news as we get them.

Meanwhile, it’s not the first time during this African Cup qualifying competition that travelling teams have cried foul over local authorities’ COVID-19 tests.

Kenya complained when four key players were ruled ineligible for a qualifier in Togo on Monday, also after test results were announced on the day of the game.

Kenya Federation president Nick Mwendwa said the players forced out of the game had all tested negative in Kenya days earlier.

The Benin-Sierra Leone cancellation was the second bizarre incident on the final day of qualifiers.
